Sri Rudram occupies the exact centre of the Taittiriya Samhita of the Krishna Yajurveda — placed there, tradition says, like a jewel at the heart of the Veda. Its eleven anuvakas of salutation (Namakam) praise Rudra, the fierce storm-god who is also the supreme healer, and ask him to turn his terrifying powers into grace. The hymn is remarkable for saluting the divine in every conceivable form — in lords and thieves, in warriors and craftsmen, in rain, lightning, dust and leaves — making it one of the earliest and grandest declarations that God pervades all things. From it later Shaiva theology drew both the Panchakshari mantra and the vision of Shiva as Pashupati, lord of all beings.

Sri Rudram is the only Vedic hymn that bows to the divine in absolutely everything — including thieves, robbers and outcasts. Three thousand years before modern ideas of universal dignity, it declared that the same God who dwells in temples dwells equally in the condemned. It also carries within it the seed of the most beloved Shaiva mantra: 'namah shivaya' appears in its eighth anuvaka, making Sri Rudram the Vedic source of Om Namah Shivaya.

Meaning:Om, salutations to Lord Rudra. Homage to your anger, O Rudra, and homage to your arrow; homage to your bow and to your two arms. The hymn prays that Rudra's arrow, bow and quiver become auspicious (shiva) and benign, that he look upon us with his most peaceful form, unstring his bow, blunt his arrows, and shield us from harm. It closes with the great salutation: homage to Vishveshvara the Lord of the universe, Mahadeva, Tryambaka, destroyer of the three cities, Kalagni-Rudra, blue-throated Nilakantha, conqueror of death Mrityunjaya, Sarveshvara, the ever-auspicious Sadashiva.

Meaning:Salutations to the golden-armed Rudra, leader of hosts and lord of the directions. He is hailed as the lord of trees clothed in green leaves, lord of cattle, lord of paths, lord of food, lord of nourished beings, lord of the worlds, lord of fields, lord of forests, lord of shrubs and herbs, and lord of warriors — the presiding power behind every domain of nature and society.

Meaning:This anuvaka reveals Rudra's startling omnipresence: he is saluted as the lord of thieves, robbers, cheats, swindlers, forest-prowlers and cut-throats — the divine dwells even in those the world condemns. Salutations are then offered to him as every kind of archer — those stringing, drawing, aiming and releasing arrows — and as those sitting and lying, sleeping and waking, standing and running, as assemblies and their lords, as horses and their masters.

Meaning:Salutations to Rudra as the striking and piercing hostesses of battle, as troops and their chieftains, as ganas and their lords (ganapatis), as beings of deformed and universal forms, great and small, with chariots and without them. He is the chariots and their lords, the armies and their generals, the charioteers, carpenters, chariot-makers, potters, blacksmiths, fowlers, fishermen, arrow-makers, bow-makers, hunters, hound-keepers — and the very hounds themselves. Divinity pervades every craft and creature.

Meaning:This central anuvaka salutes Rudra by his great names: Bhava the source of existence, Sharva the remover, Pashupati the lord of all bound souls, Nilagriva the blue-throated, Shitikantha the white-throated, Kapardin of the matted locks, the thousand-eyed and hundred-bowed one, Girisha the mountain-dweller, Shipivishta who pervades the rays. He is the swiftest, the showerer of blessings, present in waves and still waters, in flowing streams and in islands.

Meaning:Rudra is the eldest and the youngest, the first-born and the later-born, the middle and the unripe; he dwells in the nether regions and in the fertile fields, in the threshing floors, in sacred verse and at the close of the hymns. He is in the forests and thickets, in sound and in echo, he of swift armies and swift chariots, the hero and the piercer, the armoured one, the helmeted one, the famed one with renowned armies.

Meaning:Salutations to Rudra as the war-drum and the drumstick, the bold one and the prudent one, the messenger and the envoy, the quiver-bearer with sharp arrows, the wielder of fine weapons and the fine bow. He pervades all waters and weathers — narrow paths and broad roads, ponds and lakes, rivers and reservoirs, wells and pits, rain and drought, clouds and lightning, the autumn sun, the storm-winds and the sheltering dwellings.

Meaning:Salutations to him who is Soma and Rudra, copper-hued and rosy-red, the bringer of joy and the lord of creatures, the fierce and the terrifying, who slays from near and slays from afar, to the trees with their green tresses, and to Tara the saviour. Here occur the beloved names: homage to Shambhava the source of happiness and Mayobhava the source of delight, to Shankara the maker of welfare and Mayaskara the maker of bliss, to Shiva the auspicious and Shivatara the most auspicious. He dwells in fords and on banks, on the near shore and the far, in the crossing over, in young grass and foam, in sand and flowing water.

Meaning:Rudra dwells in the deserts and the beaten paths, in the rocky wastes and habitable lands, he of the matted hair standing forth, in cow-pens and homes, in couches and mansions, in thorny brakes and mountain caves, in whirlpools and dew-drops, in dust and mist, in the dry and the green, in leaves and in fallen leaves. Salutations to those who threaten and strike, to the scattering ones who are the very hearts of the gods, to the destroyers and to the watchful examiners.

Verse 10

Meaning:The tenth anuvaka is an intense personal prayer: O Rudra, blue-and-red one, do not terrify our people and our cattle; let none of ours sicken. With your gracious healing form, the healer of all days, make us live in happiness; let there be health for our two-footed and four-footed beings in this village. Slay not our elders nor our children, not the father nor the mother, harm not our dear bodies, our sons, our lifespan, our cows and horses; laying your weapon upon the distant tree, clad in the tiger-skin, come to us bearing the Pinaka bow as the most bounteous (midhushtama), most auspicious (shivatama) friend, and turn the points of your thousand weapons away from us.

Sri Rudram (Rudraprashna) is a Vedic hymn to Rudra-Shiva from the Krishna Yajurveda, Taittiriya Samhita (4.5).
