Chanakya Niti on Education & Knowledge
No treasure ranked higher in Chanakya's eyes than vidya — learning. A king, he reminds us, is honoured only in his own kingdom, but a scholar is honoured everywhere. In the Chanakya Niti, knowledge is Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling cow that feeds you even in bad times, and a mother who protects you in foreign lands. Without it, youth, beauty and noble birth are like palash flowers — bright but without fragrance. Chanakya urges us to accept wisdom from any source, to live with a student's discipline, and to turn what we read into what we can actually do. These verses celebrate education as life's most portable wealth.
વિદ્વત્ત્વં ચ નૃપત્વં ચ નૈવ તુલ્યં કદાચન। સ્વદેશે પૂજ્યતે રાજા વિદ્વાન્સર્વત્ર પૂજ્યતે॥
विद्वत्त्वं च नृपत्वं च नैव तुल्यं कदाचन। स्वदेशे पूज्यते राजा विद्वान्सर्वत्र पूज्यते॥
Scholarship and kingship can never be compared: a king is honoured only in his own country, but a learned person is honoured everywhere.

વિષાદપ્યમૃતં ગ્રાહ્યમમેધ્યાદપિ કાઞ્ચનમ્। નીચાદપ્યુત્તમાં વિદ્યાં સ્ત્રીરત્નં દુષ્કુલાદપિ॥
विषादप्यमृतं ग्राह्यममेध्यादपि काञ्चनम्। नीचादप्युत्तमां विद्यां स्त्रीरत्नं दुष्कुलादपि॥
— Chanakya Niti 1.16
Take nectar even from poison, gold even from filth, the highest knowledge even from a person of low station, and a jewel of a bride even from a humble family.

કામધેનુગુણા વિદ્યા હ્યકાલે ફલદાયિની। પ્રવાસે માતૃસદૃશી વિદ્યા ગુપ્તં ધનં સ્મૃતમ્॥
कामधेनुगुणा विद्या ह्यकाले फलदायिनी। प्रवासे मातृसदृशी विद्या गुप्तं धनं स्मृतम्॥
Knowledge is like the wish-fulfilling cow Kamadhenu — it bears fruit even in the worst of times; in a foreign land it protects like a mother. Knowledge is called the hidden treasure.

રૂપયૌવનસમ્પન્ના વિશાલકુલસમ્ભવાઃ। વિદ્યાહીના ન શોભન્તે નિર્ગન્ધા ઇવ કિંશુકાઃ॥
रूपयौवनसम्पन्ना विशालकुलसम्भवाः। विद्याहीना न शोभन्ते निर्गन्धा इव किंशुकाः॥
Those blessed with beauty and youth and born into great families still do not shine if they lack learning — like kimshuka (palash) flowers, brilliant but without fragrance.
💡 Privilege and appearance open doors, but only substance keeps them open.
કાકચેષ્ટા બકોધ્યાનં શ્વાનનિદ્રા તથૈવ ચ। અલ્પાહારી ગૃહત્યાગી વિદ્યાર્થી પઞ્ચલક્ષણમ્॥
काकचेष्टा बकोध्यानं श्वाननिद्रा तथैव च। अल्पाहारी गृहत्यागी विद्यार्थी पञ्चलक्षणम्॥
Effort like a crow's, concentration like a crane's, sleep as light as a dog's, moderate eating, and readiness to leave home — these are the five marks of a true student.

પુસ્તકસ્થા તુ યા વિદ્યા પરહસ્તગતં ધનમ્। કાર્યકાલે સમુત્પન્ને ન સા વિદ્યા ન તદ્ધનમ્॥
पुस्तकस्था तु या विद्या परहस्तगतं धनम्। कार्यकाले समुत्पन्ने न सा विद्या न तद्धनम्॥
Knowledge that stays only in books and wealth held in another's hands — when the moment of need arrives, that is neither knowledge nor wealth.
💡 Practise what you learn until it lives in you — untested knowledge is a bookmark, not a skill.
