Origin & Story

Markandeya Purana, Devi Mahatmyam (Durga Saptashati) ยท Sage Markandeya ยท Ancient (c. 400-500 CE for the text; story set in mythological time)

The Durga Kavach appears in the Markandeya Purana as a dialogue between Sage Markandeya and Brahma. When Markandeya asked Brahma for the supreme secret that protects all human beings, Brahma revealed the Devi Kavach โ€” the divine armor of the Goddess. He explained that this prayer had never been revealed to anyone before, and that whoever recites it becomes encased in an impenetrable shield of divine energy, with each goddess stationed at a specific part of the body to ward off all harm.

โœฆ As told in scripture

The Durga Kavach is associated with the miraculous protection of devotees in life-threatening situations. In the Devi Mahatmyam itself, the divine armor protected the gods when they were attacked by the demon armies of Mahishasura. In one famous tradition, a devotee who recited the Kavach daily was caught in a devastating flood. While others perished, he was found unharmed on a small patch of dry ground โ€” witnesses said they saw a circle of light around him during the entire ordeal, as if invisible hands had held back the waters from his body, exactly as the Kavach promises protection for every limb.

Frequently Asked Questions

This page shows the complete Durga Kavach written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Durga Kavach (Devi Kavach) is a protective prayer from the Markandeya Purana in which specific forms of Goddess Durga are invoked to protect every part of the devotee's body. It literally means 'Armor of Durga' and creates a spiritual shield.
It is most commonly recited during Navratri as part of the Durga Saptashati. It can also be recited on Fridays, Tuesdays, or whenever one needs divine protection โ€” before travel, during illness, or in times of danger.
Yes, Durga Kavach is one of the three preliminary texts recited before the main 700 verses of the Durga Saptashati (Devi Mahatmyam). The other two are the Argala Stotra and the Kilaka Stotra.
The nine Durgas (Navadurga) represent the nine forms of Goddess Durga worshipped during the nine nights of Navratri. Each form has specific powers and protects devotees in different ways. The Kavach invokes all nine for complete protection.
Absolutely. Goddess Durga represents Shakti (divine feminine power). There is no restriction on women reciting the Kavach. In fact, it is considered especially empowering for women seeking protection and strength.
