Swami Vedanta Desika, who lived for much of his life in Kanchipuram, composed this Ashtakam as a prapatti to Ashtabhuja Perumal, the eight-armed form of Vishnu in the Ashtabhujakaram Divya Desam. Overcome by the Lord's beauty and grace, and likening himself to the helpless Gajendra dragged by the crocodile of sense-objects, he surrendered himself entirely into the Lord's protection in eight verses, praying not for liberation as an end in itself but for the bliss of perpetual service at the Lord's feet.

The Lord is said to have taken the rare eight-armed (ashtabhuja) form at Kanchipuram to guard a great sacrifice from disruption, driving away the obstructing forces with the weapons in His eight hands; devotees hold that He who thus protected the yajna, and who once flew to save Gajendra, likewise shields all who surrender to Him through this Ashtakam.

Meaning:ಗಜೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ಮೊಸಳೆ ಎಳೆದಂತೆ, ನಾನು ವಿಷಯಗಳಿಂದ ಎಳೆಯಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ; ಗಜೇಂದ್ರನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಲು ವೇಗವಾಗಿ ಧಾವಿಸಿದ, ಸಾಧುಗಳ ಆಶ್ರಯವಾದ, ಅಪಾರ ಜ್ಞಾನ-ದಯೆ-ಪ್ರಭಾವವುಳ್ಳ ಆ ಅಷ್ಟಭುಜ ಭಗವಂತನನ್ನು ನಾನು ಶರಣುಹೊಂದುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Meaning:ನಾನು ಕೇವಲ ನಿಮ್ಮವನು (ನಿಮಗೆ ಅಧೀನ), ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರನಲ್ಲ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾದಗಳ ಕಾಂಕ್ಷೆಯನ್ನು ನನಗಿತ್ತ ನಿಮ್ಮಿಂದಲೇ, ಅಸತ್ತಿಗೆ ಸಮಾನನಾದರೂ, ಈಗ ನಾನು ಸತ್ತೆಯನ್ನು (ನಿಜವಾದ ಅಸ್ತಿತ್ವವನ್ನು) ಪಡೆದೆನು — ಓ ಅಷ್ಟಭುಜ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಯೇ!

Meaning:ನಿಮ್ಮ ಸ್ವರೂಪ, ರೂಪ, ಅಸ್ತ್ರ, ಆಭರಣಗಳಿಂದ ನನ್ನಲ್ಲಿ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪರತ್ವದ (ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠತೆಯ) ದುರ್ನಿವಾರ ಭಾವವನ್ನು — ಭೋಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸುಲಭತೆಯನ್ನು ಬಯಸಿ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಶೀಲಾದಿ ಗುಣಗಳಿಂದ ನೀವು ತೊಲಗಿಸಿದಂತೆ ಮಾಡುತ್ತೀರಿ.

śaktiṃ śaraṇyāntaraśabdabhājāṃ sāraṃ ca santolya phalāntarāṇām | tvaddāsyahetostvayi nirviśaṅkaṃ nyastātmanāṃ nātha bibharṣi bhāram || 4 ||

Meaning:ಓ ನಾಥಾ! ಇತರ 'ಶರಣ' ಎನಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವವರ ಶಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನೂ, ಇತರ ಫಲಗಳ ಸಾರವನ್ನೂ ತೂಗಿ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ದಾಸ್ಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ನಿಸ್ಸಂಕೋಚವಾಗಿ ತಮ್ಮನ್ನು ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ನ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡಿದವರ ಭಾರವನ್ನು ನೀವು ಹೊರುತ್ತೀರಿ.

abhītihetoranuvartanīyaṃ nātha tvadanyaṃ na vibhāvayāmi | bhayaṃ kutaḥ syāt tvayi sānukampe rakṣā kutaḥ syāt tvayi jātaroṣe || 5 ||

Meaning:ಓ ನಾಥಾ! ಅಭಯಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಅನುಸರಿಸಬೇಕಾದ ನಿಮ್ಮನ್ನು ಬಿಟ್ಟು ಬೇರೊಬ್ಬರನ್ನು ನಾನು ಊಹಿಸುವುದೂ ಇಲ್ಲ. ನೀವು ಸಾನುಕಂಪರಾದರೆ ಭಯವೆಲ್ಲಿ? ನೀವೇ (ಒಂದು ವೇಳೆ) ರುಷ್ಟರಾದರೆ ರಕ್ಷಣೆ ಎಲ್ಲಿಂದ?

Meaning:ಓ ಕಮಲಾಸಹಾಯನೇ (ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಪತಿಯೇ)! ನಾನು ಕೇವಲ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವಲಂಬಿತನು, ಆದ್ದರಿಂದ ನೀವೇ ಸ್ವತಃ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ರಕ್ಷಿಸಿ. ನೀವು ಮುಂದಾದರೆ ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಿಂದ ಏನು ಪ್ರಯೋಜನ? ನೀವು ಮುಂದಾಗದಿದ್ದರೂ ನನ್ನ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನದಿಂದ ಏನು?

Meaning:ಸಮಾಧಿ ಭಂಗವಾದರೂ, ವಿಘ್ನಗಳು ಬಂದೆರಗಿದರೂ, ಶರಣ್ಯರಾದ ನೀವು ಸೊಂಟ ಬಿಗಿದು (ರಕ್ಷಣೆಗೆ ಸಿದ್ಧರಾಗಿ) ಇರುವಾಗ, ನಾನು ಅಕಿಂಚನನು, ನಿರ್ಲಜ್ಜನು, ಓ ನಾಥಾ, ಕಠಿಣ ಆರೋಹಣವನ್ನೂ ಪತನವನ್ನೂ — ಎರಡನ್ನೂ ಸಹಿಸಬಲ್ಲೆನು.

Meaning:ನಿಮ್ಮ ಕೃಪೆಯಿಂದ ಅಭೀಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಪಡೆದು, ಓ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮಿಯಿಂದ ಸೇವಿಸಲ್ಪಡುವ ಪಾದಪದ್ಮಗಳುಳ್ಳವನೇ! ಈ ದೇಹ ಪತನದವರೆಗೆ ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಅಪರಾಧದಿಂದ ದೂರವಿಡುತ್ತಾ, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪಾದಪದ್ಮಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಅಂತರಂಗ ಕೈಂಕರ್ಯ ರಸದಿಂದ ಕೂಡಿದವನನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮಾಡಿ.

Ashtabhuja ('eight-armed') Perumal is a unique form of Lord Vishnu enshrined at the Ashtabhujakaram (Adikesava Perumal) temple in Kanchipuram, one of the 108 Divya Desams. He bears eight arms holding different weapons and emblems. Tradition relates that the Lord assumed this eight-armed form to protect a sacrifice and to grant grace to His devotees.

It was composed by Swami Vedanta Desika (1268-1369 CE), the great Sri Vaishnava acharya, as a prapatti (act of surrender) at the feet of Ashtabhuja Perumal of Kanchipuram.

Desika compares himself to Gajendra, the elephant-king seized by a crocodile and saved when he cried out to the Lord. Just as the Lord rushed to rescue Gajendra, Desika, feeling himself dragged about by the senses, takes refuge in the same compassionate Lord, the Ashtabhuja.

Not worldly gains, but the joy of eternal, intimate service (kainkarya) at the Lord's lotus feet, free from all offence, until the very end of this life (verse 8). This reflects the Sri Vaishnava ideal of service as the highest goal.
