Chanakya Niti on Leadership & Kingship
Chanakya was the ultimate kingmaker — mentor of Chandragupta Maurya and architect of an empire — and his verses on kingship read like a manual for every modern leader. As the king is, so are the people: a righteous ruler breeds righteous followers, and a corrupt one corrupts everything downstream. The Chanakya Niti holds leaders answerable for the failings of those they lead, warns that a ruler without wise counsel collapses like a tree on a crumbling riverbank, and insists that greatness flows from virtues, never from the height of one's seat. These verses distil his teaching on responsibility, counsel and character in positions of power.
ਰਾਜ੍ਞਿ ਧਰ੍ਮਿਣਿ ਧਰ੍ਮਿਸ਼੍ਠਾਃ ਪਾਪੇ ਪਾਪਾਃ ਸਮੇ ਸਮਾਃ। ਰਾਜਾਨਮਨੁਵਰ੍ਤਨ੍ਤੇ ਯਥਾ ਰਾਜਾ ਤਥਾ ਪ੍ਰਜਾਃ॥
राज्ञि धर्मिणि धर्मिष्ठाः पापे पापाः समे समाः। राजानमनुवर्तन्ते यथा राजा तथा प्रजाः॥
When the king is righteous, the people are righteous; when he is sinful, they turn sinful; when he is mediocre, they are mediocre. The people follow the king — as the ruler, so the ruled.

ਨਦੀਤੀਰੇ ਚ ਯੇ ਵ੍ਰਿਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਃ ਪਰਗੇਹੇਸ਼ੁ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ। ਮਨ੍ਤ੍ਰਹੀਨਾਸ਼੍ਚ ਰਾਜਾਨਃ ਸ਼ੀਘ੍ਰਂ ਨਸ਼੍ਯਨ੍ਤ੍ਯਸਂਸ਼ਯਮ੍॥
नदीतीरे च ये वृक्षाः परगेहेषु कामिनी। मन्त्रहीनाश्च राजानः शीघ्रं नश्यन्त्यसंशयम्॥
Trees standing on the riverbank, a woman lodged in another's house, and kings without wise counsel — all these perish quickly, without a doubt.

ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਰਕ੍ਰਿਤਂ ਪਾਪਂ ਰਾਜ੍ਞਃ ਪਾਪਂ ਪੁਰੋਹਿਤਃ। ਭਰ੍ਤਾ ਚ ਸ੍ਤ੍ਰੀਕ੍ਰਿਤਂ ਪਾਪਂ ਸ਼ਿਸ਼੍ਯਪਾਪਂ ਗੁਰੁਸ੍ਤਥਾ॥
राजा राष्ट्रकृतं पापं राज्ञः पापं पुरोहितः। भर्ता च स्त्रीकृतं पापं शिष्यपापं गुरुस्तथा॥
The king answers for the sins of the nation, the royal priest for the sins of the king, the husband for the wife's, and the guru for the disciple's.

ਗੁਣੈਰੁਤ੍ਤਮਤਾਂ ਯਾਤਿ ਨੋਚ੍ਚੈਰਾਸਨਸਂਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ। ਪ੍ਰਾਸਾਦਸ਼ਿਖਰਸ੍ਥੋऽਪਿ ਕਾਕਃ ਕਿਂ ਗਰੁਡਾਯਤੇ॥
गुणैरुत्तमतां याति नोच्चैरासनसंस्थितः। प्रासादशिखरस्थोऽपि काकः किं गरुडायते॥
One attains greatness by virtues, not by sitting on a high seat — does a crow perched on a palace tower become Garuda, the king of birds?
