Rahu is the north lunar node — a shadow graha (Chhaya graha) with no physical body, the severed head of the serpent that swallows the Sun and Moon at eclipses. Rahu is the planet of worldly desire, ambition, illusion, foreign things and sudden, unconventional gains. He amplifies whatever he touches and is obsessed with the material. A strong Rahu can give meteoric, unexpected success; an afflicted Rahu brings confusion, addiction and deceit.

Rahu Beej Mantra

ॐ भ्रां भ्रीं भ्रौं सः राहवे नमः

Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah

What Rahu Signifies

Insatiable desire and ambition, illusion (maya) and obsession, foreign lands, cultures and technology, the unconventional and taboo, sudden gains and gambling, mass influence and politics, smoke, poison and hidden things. Rahu has no rulership but is often considered strong in Aquarius, Taurus and Gemini, and is always opposite Ketu.

When Rahu is Strong

A well-directed Rahu can give sudden and spectacular success, fame, political and material power, mastery of foreign languages, technology and unconventional fields, research and innovation, and the drive to break boundaries others fear. Rahu rewards bold, original ambition.

When Rahu is Weak / Afflicted

An afflicted Rahu can bring confusion, anxiety, phobias, addictions, deception (by you or of you), scandal, sudden reversals, and an endless craving that no amount of success satisfies. The cure is grounding, honesty, spiritual discipline and surrender of obsessive desire.

Rahu Remedies (Upay)

  • Worship Goddess Durga and Lord Bhairav; recite the Durga Kavach and the Rahu beej mantra.
  • Chant the Mahamrityunjaya Mantra and the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam for protection from sudden, hidden troubles.
  • Donate black or smoky items — black sesame, blankets, mustard oil, coconut — and serve outcastes and the marginalised.
  • Keep life clean and grounded; avoid intoxicants, gambling and deceit, which Rahu turns against you.
  • Wear a Hessonite (Gomed) only on careful qualified astrological advice.

What are Rahu and Ketu?

Rahu and Ketu are the two lunar nodes — the points where the Moon’s path crosses the ecliptic — not physical planets but powerful "shadow" grahas. Rahu is the serpent’s head (worldly desire) and Ketu the tail (detachment and moksha); they always sit exactly opposite each other and cause eclipses.
