What is the Durga Chalisa?

The Durga Chalisa is a devotional hymn of 40 verses praising Goddess Durga — the supreme divine mother in her warrior form, destroyer of all evil and the ultimate protector of her devotees. Durga means "the one who is difficult to reach" — she is the formidable, invincible aspect of the divine feminine who defeats all that harms her children.

The Chalisa narrates Durga's divine qualities, her battles against the demons Mahishasura, Shumbha and Nishumbha, and her ever-present grace over her devotees. It is especially powerful during Navratri — the nine-night festival celebrating the divine mother — but equally effective as a daily practice throughout the year.

Goddess Durga is the combined power of all the gods — Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva — given form to defeat what individual divine powers could not. Her worship invokes this same absolute divine power on behalf of the devotee.
