Introduction to the Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa (श्री हनुमान चालीसा) is the most recited devotional text in Hinduism worldwide. Composed by the 16th-century saint-poet Goswami Tulsidas in the Awadhi language, this hymn of 40 verses (chaupais) plus opening and closing couplets (dohas) praises every quality and divine deed of Lord Hanuman — the son of the Wind God, the devoted servant of Lord Rama, and the mightiest protector of sincere devotees.
The word chalisa comes from chalis — forty — the number of verses. Chanting it is like creating an unbreakable divine shield: Lord Hanuman as Sankat Mochan (remover of all dangers) responds to sincere devotion by removing obstacles, granting courage, healing disease and protecting from all negative forces.
