उनकी पत्नी मरुद्मती भी अत्यंत पतिव्रता और शिवभक्ता थीं।
संतान प्राप्ति के लिए दोनों ने वर्षों तक भगवान शिव की कठोर तपस्या की।
प्रसन्न होकर भगवान शिव प्रकट हुए और वरदान दिया:
“तुम्हें पुत्र मिलेगा —
या तो अल्पायु लेकिन अत्यंत तेजस्वी,
या दीर्घायु लेकिन मंद बुद्धि।”
ऋषि ने तेजस्वी पुत्र को चुना, भले ही उसकी आयु कम हो।
