Ganesh Mantra
गणेश मंत्र
Origin & Story
Various Puranas and Tantric texts · Vedic Rishis · Ancient
Ganesh mantras originate from various scriptures. The Om Gan Ganapataye Namaha mantra invokes Ganesha as the lord of all ganas. Ganesha is always worshipped first — this tradition comes from when Shiva declared Ganesha must be worshipped before all other gods.
✦ As told in scripture
In the Shiva Purana, when Ganesha was beheaded by Shiva (not recognizing him), Parvati's grief shook the universe. Shiva replaced his head with that of an elephant and declared Ganesha would be worshipped first among all gods. The Mudgala Purana records that chanting Ganesh mantras has removed obstacles for kings and sages throughout history.

How to Chant Ganesh Mantra
Wednesday is Ganesha's day. Sunrise on Wednesday is particularly powerful. Offer modak (sweet dumpling) or laddoo if available. Chant the beej mantra 'Gam' 3 times first to invoke Ganesha's energy directly. Then chant OM GAM GANAPATAYE NAMAHA 108 times on a mala, slowly and clearly, feeling the 'Gam' resonate in your chest. Visualise Lord Ganesha using his trunk to clear all obstacles from the path ahead. State your intention clearly before or after chanting. For a specific goal, chant 108 times for 21 consecutive days (anusthan). Simply chanting 11 times before any new activity is also well-established.
