What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the most widely used timing system in Vedic astrology. Its 120-year cycle divides life into the Mahadashas of nine planets — Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years. Within each Mahadasha the same nine planets run as Antardashas, giving the fine grain of each phase. Which planet you begin under depends on the Moon's nakshatra at the moment you were born.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Vimshottari Dasha?

Vimshottari Dasha is the main timing system of Vedic astrology — a 120-year cycle that divides life into planetary periods (Mahādaśā), each ruled by one of nine grahas. The order and length are fixed; where you begin depends on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.

What is the difference between Mahadasha and Antardasha?

The Mahādaśā is the major period (e.g. 18 years for Rahu); within it run nine sub-periods called Antardaśā (or Bhukti), each governed by a planet. The Mahādaśā sets the theme of the years; the Antardaśā shades each phase within it.

Why do I need my birth time for dasha?

Your dasha sequence starts from the Moon's exact nakshatra position at birth, which shifts with time. An accurate birth time gives the correct balance of the first dasha and keeps every later period aligned.
