The Legend of Goddess Saraswati

At the dawn of creation, Lord Brahma looked upon the universe he had made and found it silent, formless and without meaning — a world that could neither speak nor sing nor know itself. From his power there arose a radiant goddess clothed in white, seated upon a lotus, holding a veena, a book and a rosary: Saraswati, the goddess of speech, knowledge and the arts.

As she gently played her veena, sound and word and rhythm flowed into the world. From her came Vak — speech — and with it language, the Vedas, music, poetry and every science and art. What had been a mute and shapeless creation awoke into wisdom and harmony, for without knowledge even the Creator's work was incomplete.

So Saraswati is honoured as the mother of all learning and the giver of vidya, flowing like a river of knowledge, ever pure, ever white. Students, musicians and artists worship her — above all on Vasant Panchami — placing their books and instruments before her, for it is by her grace alone that the tongue speaks truth and the mind grasps wisdom.
