The Legend of Goddess Lakshmi
When the gods, weakened by a sage's curse, had lost their fortune and splendour, they joined with the demons to churn the ocean of milk for the nectar of immortality. Using Mount Mandara as the churning-rod and the serpent Vasuki as the rope — with Lord Vishnu himself upholding the sinking mountain as a great tortoise — they churned the vast ocean for ages.
From the churning rose many wonders: the moon, the divine cow, the wish-granting tree, a deadly poison and heavenly treasures. And then, seated upon a full-blown lotus, radiant and lovely beyond compare, rose Goddess Lakshmi herself — Shri, the goddess of wealth, beauty and auspiciousness — and the whole universe was lit by her grace.
Of all who stood before her, the Goddess chose Lord Vishnu, the preserver, and placed her garland upon him, taking her eternal place at his side and upon his heart. So Lakshmi dwells with Vishnu as Shri, and goes where dharma, cleanliness, devotion and honest effort are found. She is worshipped above all at Diwali, when every home is cleaned and lit to welcome the Mother of Fortune.
