Chanakya Niti on Health
Chanakya calls the body the one possession that can never be replaced: wealth, friends, spouse and land may all be regained, but not this body. The Chanakya Niti offers surprisingly practical wellness rules — when water heals and when it harms — alongside a deeper diagnosis: no disease is like craving, no enemy like delusion, no fire like anger. Health, for Chanakya, is physical routine and mental discipline together. And since the body is short-lived while virtues endure for ages, he asks us to maintain the vessel well and use it to build what outlasts it. These verses gather his teaching on caring for body and mind.
In indigestion, water is medicine; after food is digested, it gives strength; taken during a meal it is like nectar; but drunk immediately after eating it acts like poison.
💡 Health lies in timing and moderation — even the simplest things, like water, heal or harm depending on how you use them.
Wealth may come again, friends may come again, a spouse may come again, land may come again — all these can be regained, but this body, never again.
💡 Never sacrifice your health chasing things that are replaceable — the body is the one asset with no second chance.
There is no disease like craving, no enemy like delusion, no fire like anger, and no happiness greater than knowledge.
💡 Mental health is health — unchecked desire, obsession and anger damage the body as surely as any illness.
— Chanakya Niti 4.1
Lifespan, deeds, wealth, learning and the time of death — these five are ordained for a being while still in the womb.
💡 Some limits are set by nature and destiny — pour your energy into the habits you can actually control.
Between the body and one's virtues lies a vast difference: the body can perish in a moment, while virtues endure to the end of the ages.
💡 Care for the body, but build what outlasts it — character, skills and good deeds.
