Chanakya Niti on Speech & Words
Chanakya treats speech as both wealth and weapon — to be spent generously in kindness and guarded fiercely in strategy. The Chanakya Niti reminds us that every creature is won over by pleasant words, and asks why anyone should be a miser in speech. Yet it equally insists on discretion: keep your plans, losses and humiliations to yourself, and let results do the talking. The cuckoo's only beauty is its voice — and in large measure, so is ours. Beneath it all stands truth, upon which, Chanakya says, the whole world rests. These verses teach when to speak sweetly, when to speak truly, and when to stay silent.
— Chanakya Niti 2.7
Do not reveal in words what you have planned in your mind; guard it like a secret counsel and quietly put it into action.
💡 Announce results, not intentions — plans spoken too early invite obstacles and rivals.
Loss of wealth, anguish of mind, misconduct within the home, an occasion of being cheated, and humiliation — the wise do not broadcast these.
💡 Not everything needs an audience — protect your dignity and your family's by choosing carefully what you share.
All beings are pleased by kind words; therefore speak kindly always — why be a pauper in speech?
💡 Kind words cost nothing and buy everything — spend them freely every day.
The beauty of the cuckoo is its voice; the beauty of a woman is her devotion; learning is the beauty of the plain-looking; and forgiveness is the beauty of ascetics.
💡 How you speak and act is your real appearance — voice, loyalty, learning and forgiveness outshine looks.
By truth the earth is upheld, by truth the sun burns, by truth the wind blows — everything rests upon truth.
💡 Truthful speech is the foundation of all trust — one lie can undo years of sweet words.
