Sutak Kaal

Sutak is the period before an eclipse when auspicious activities, worship and eating are avoided and temples remain closed. For a lunar eclipse it begins 9 hours before, and for a solar eclipse 12 hours before, ending with a bath after the eclipse. Sutak is observed only in places where the eclipse is visible; penumbral lunar eclipses carry no Sutak.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Sutak Kaal?
Sutak is the inauspicious period before an eclipse when worship, eating and auspicious activities are avoided and temples close. For a lunar eclipse it begins 9 hours before, for a solar eclipse 12 hours before. Sutak is observed only where the eclipse is actually visible.
Does Sutak apply if the eclipse is not visible in India?
No. If an eclipse is not visible from India, its Sutak is not observed here. Penumbral lunar eclipses also carry no Sutak.
Which eclipses occur in 2026?
There are four eclipses in 2026 — the 17 Feb annular solar, 3 Mar total lunar, 12 Aug total solar and 28 Aug partial lunar. Of these, only the 3 March lunar eclipse is visible (at moonrise) in parts of India.
What precautions are traditionally taken during an eclipse?
By tradition, people rest during Sutak and the eclipse, avoid eating and starting new work, keep tulsi in stored food, and bathe afterwards; pregnant women take special care. These are faith-based customs.

Eclipse dates are astronomical; confirm India visibility and exact Sutak timing with your local panchang.
