Origin & Story

Sri Sudarshana Samhita ยท Vibhishana (brother of Ravana, devotee of Rama) ยท Traditional (Puranic/Samhita literature)

This stotra is attributed to Vibhishana and preserved in the Sri Sudarshana Samhita. Vibhishana, who had witnessed Hanuman's countless rescues during the Ramayana war โ€” above all the bringing of the Sanjivani mountain to save Lakshmana's life โ€” composed this hymn to Hanuman as the supreme remover of danger. The meditation verses paint Hanuman holding the mountain in one hand and a weapon to destroy enemies in the other, capturing his dual role as healer and protector. The closing verses form a phala-shruti listing the many calamities from which the devotee is freed.

โœฆ As told in scripture

The most famous deed behind this stotra is Hanuman lifting and carrying the entire Sanjivani mountain across the sky to revive Lakshmana, who lay mortally wounded by Indrajit's Shakti weapon. Because Hanuman thus literally rescued life from the brink of death, devotees trust this 'Apaduddharaka' hymn to lift them out of the gravest dangers, and its verses promise that for those who remember him 'there is no danger anywhere.'

Recite the full stotra with devotion, ideally at dawn or dusk as the verse advises. It is especially recited before facing a difficult situation โ€” a court case, an interview, a journey, or any danger โ€” since it specifically promises rescue from all calamity and victory in disputes. In an emergency, simply remembering Hanuman through this stotra is said to remove the danger.

This page shows the complete Apaduddharaka Hanuman Stotram written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
'Apaduddharaka' is a combination of 'apad' (calamity, danger, misfortune) and 'uddharaka' (one who lifts up or rescues). So 'Apaduddharaka Hanuman' means 'Hanuman, the rescuer from all calamities.' The stotra is named for Hanuman's power to lift devotees out of every kind of trouble.
It was composed by Vibhishana, the devotee-brother of Ravana, and is preserved in the Sri Sudarshana Samhita. The opening viniyoga explicitly names Vibhishana as the rishi (seer) and Hanuman as the deity of this mantra-hymn.
It is recited at dawn and dusk for general protection, and specifically before facing any difficulty โ€” a lawsuit, an examination or interview, travel, illness, or sudden danger โ€” because the verses promise rescue from all calamities and victory in courts, assemblies and disputes.
The dhyana (meditation) verse describes Hanuman carrying the mountain because of the famous episode in the Ramayana where he flew to the Himalayas and brought back the entire Sanjivani mountain bearing the life-saving herb to revive the wounded Lakshmana โ€” a perfect image of Hanuman as the rescuer from calamity.
