Closing the Narayani Stuti (Chapter 11 of the Devi Mahatmya / Durga Saptashati), the gods implore the Divine Mother to protect them forever from their enemies, to dissolve the sins of all the worlds and the calamities born of evil portents, and to be the bestower of boons to the three worlds. Pleased, the Goddess offers them any boon they desire; selflessly, the gods ask only that she ever quell the world's calamities and destroy the foes of the righteous. It is a beautiful prayer-and-response of refuge, grace and protection.

The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati or Chandi), part of the Markandeya Purana, recounts the Divine Mother's victories over the demons. In Chapter 11, after Shumbha is slain, the gods sing the Narayani Stuti and bring it to a close with this earnest prayer: that the Goddess protect them always from foes, end the sins and calamities of all the worlds, and be the bestower of boons to the three worlds. Moved, the Goddess offers them whatever boon they wish. With perfect selflessness the gods ask not for themselves but only that she forever quell the world's calamities and destroy the enemies of dharma — and so she promises, foretelling her future descents whenever danger arises.

Tradition holds that this passage carries the Goddess's own pledge to grant the prayers of her devotees and to descend again and again to protect the world. Those who recite it with faith are said to find their obstacles dissolved, inauspicious omens turned aside, and enemies rendered powerless by the Mother's grace.

देवि प्रसीद परिपालय नोऽरिभीते- र्नित्यं यथासुरवधादधुनैव सद्यः । पापानि सर्वजगतां प्रशमं नयाशु उत्पातपाकजनितांश्च महोपसर्गान् ॥

devi prasīda paripālaya no'ribhīte- rnityaṃ yathāsuravadhādadhunaiva sadyaḥ pāpāni sarvajagatāṃ praśamaṃ nayāśu utpātapākajanitāṃśca mahopasargān

Meaning:ఓ దేవీ! ప్రసన్నురాలవు కమ్ము; ఇప్పుడే అసుర వధ ద్వారా నీవు మమ్ము రక్షించినట్లే, సదా మమ్ము శత్రు భయము నుండి కాపాడు. మరియు సమస్త జగత్తు యొక్క పాపాలను, ఉత్పాతముల పరిపాకము వలన కలిగే మహా ఉపసర్గాలను శీఘ్రముగా శాంతింపజేయి.

Meaning:ఓ విశ్వ బాధను తొలగించే దేవీ! నీకు నమస్కరించే మమ్ముపై ప్రసన్నురాలవు కమ్ము; ఓ ముల్లోక వాసులచే స్తుతింపదగినదానా! లోకాలకు వరదాయినివి కమ్ము!

देव्युवाच वरदाहं सुरगणा वरं यन्मनसेच्छथ । तं वृणुध्वं प्रयच्छामि जगतामुपकारकम् ॥

Meaning:దేవి పలికెను — ఓ దేవగణములారా! నేను వరదాయినిని. మనసులో ఏ వరమును కోరుతారో, దానినే కోరుకొనుడు; జగత్తుకు ఉపకారకరమైన ఆ వరమును నేను ప్రసాదిస్తాను.

देवा ऊचुः सर्वाबाधाप्रशमनं त्रैलोक्यस्याखिलेश्वरि । एवमेव त्वया कार्यमस्मद्वैरिविनाशनम् ॥
