Chanakya Niti on Children & Parenting
Chanakya places one duty above all others that parents owe their children: education. Parents who do not educate their child, he says with deliberate sternness, act as the child's enemies, for the unlettered child sits in an assembly like a crane among swans. The Chanakya Niti asks parents to train children steadily in virtue and right conduct, to prefer loving discipline over blind indulgence, and to aim for depth of character rather than outward show. മാതാ ശത്രുഃ പിതാ വൈരീ യേന ബാലോ ന പാഠിതഃ। ന ശോഭതേ സഭാമധ്യേ ഹംസമധ്യേ ബകോ യഥാ॥
माता शत्रुः पिता वैरी येन बालो न पाठितः। न शोभते सभामध्ये हंसमध्ये बको यथा॥

പുത്രാശ്ച വിവിധൈഃ ശീലൈര്നിയോജ്യാഃ സതതം ബുധൈഃ। നീതിജ്ഞാഃ ശീലസമ്പന്നാ ഭവന്തി കുലപൂജിതാഃ॥
पुत्राश्च विविधैः शीलैर्नियोज्याः सततं बुधैः। नीतिज्ञाः शीलसम्पन्ना भवन्ति कुलपूजिताः॥
The wise continually train their children in the many forms of good conduct, for children who know right living and are rich in character bring honour to the family.

ലാലനാദ്ബഹവോ ദോഷാസ്താഡനാദ്ബഹവോ ഗുണാഃ। തസ്മാത്പുത്രം ച ശിഷ്യം ച താഡയേന്ന തു ലാലയേത്॥
लालनाद्बहवो दोषास्ताडनाद्बहवो गुणाः। तस्मात्पुत्रं च शिष्यं च ताडयेन्न तु लालयेत्॥

Over-pampering breeds many faults, while discipline builds many virtues; therefore correct your child and student firmly rather than spoiling them with indulgence.

एकेनापि सुवृक्षेण पुष्पितेन सुगन्धिना। वासितं तद्वनं सर्वं सुपुत्रेण कुलं यथा॥
A single noble tree covered in fragrant blossoms perfumes the entire forest — just as one worthy child brings glory to the whole family.

वरमेको गुणी पुत्रो न च मूर्खशतान्यपि। एकश्चन्द्रस्तमो हन्ति न च तारागणोऽपि च॥
One virtuous child is better than a hundred foolish ones — the single moon dispels the darkness, which the whole host of stars cannot.
