Chanakya Niti Life Lessons

The Chanakya Niti is, in the end, a manual for living wisely amid uncertainty, and its broadest lessons are gathered here. Avoid excess in everything — even beauty, pride and generosity destroyed Sita, Ravana and Bali when carried to extremes. Audit yourself constantly: the times, the place, your friends, your income and expenses, your own strength. Let go of the finished past and the imagined future, for the wise act in the present. Know what may be sacrificed for what when hard choices come. And above all stands the quiet teaching that letting go, not accumulating, is the deepest happiness. These verses hold Chanakya's essential lessons for life.

For the sake of the family, one person may be given up; for the village, a family; for the nation, a village; but for the sake of the soul, one should give up the whole earth.

💡 Know your hierarchy of values — and never trade your integrity and soul for anything the world offers.

Through exceeding beauty Sita was abducted, through exceeding pride Ravana was destroyed, through exceeding charity Bali was bound — excess should be avoided everywhere.

💡 Even virtues become dangerous in excess — moderation is the master key to a stable life.

What is the time? Who are my friends? What is this place? What are my expenses and income? Who am I, and what is my strength? — reflect on these again and again.

💡 Run a regular self-audit — of circumstances, relationships, finances and capabilities — before life forces one on you.

Do not grieve over what is gone, and do not brood anxiously over the future — the wise act in the present moment.

💡 Regret and anxiety both steal today — the present moment is the only place where anything can actually be done.

There is no eye like knowledge, no austerity like truth, no sorrow like attachment, and no happiness like letting go.

💡 Most suffering comes from clinging — practise letting go of things, outcomes and grudges, and lightness follows.
