Chanakya Niti on Enemies & Caution
Chanakya survived palace conspiracies and toppled an empire, so his advice on enemies is ruthlessly practical. The wicked, he warns, are worse than serpents — a snake strikes only when its moment comes, but the wicked strike at every step. The Chanakya Niti counsels measured trust near rivers, armed men and centres of power; it warns that enemies can grow inside the home, as debt and neglect; and it cautions against being so straightforward that the world cuts you down first, as the straightest trees of the forest are felled first. These verses teach vigilance without paranoia — alertness as a habit, not a fear.
ദുര്ജനസ്യ ച സര്പസ്യ വരം സര്പോ ന ദുര്ജനഃ। സര്പോ ദംശതി കാലേ തു ദുര്ജനസ്തു പദേ പദേ॥
दुर्जनस्य च सर्पस्य वरं सर्पो न दुर्जनः। सर्पो दंशति काले तु दुर्जनस्तु पदे पदे॥
Between a wicked person and a serpent, the serpent is the better of the two — for the serpent bites only when its time comes, but the wicked wound at every step.
💡 Distance yourself early from habitually malicious people — unlike open threats, they do damage continuously.
നഖീനാം ച നദീനാം ച ശൃങ്ഗീണാം ശസ്ത്രപാണിനാമ്। വിശ്വാസോ നൈവ കര്തവ്യഃ സ്ത്രീഷു രാജകുലേഷു ച॥
नखीनां च नदीनां च शृङ्गीणां शस्त्रपाणिनाम्। विश्वासो नैव कर्तव्यः स्त्रीषु राजकुलेषु च॥
— Chanakya Niti 1.15
Never place blind trust in clawed beasts, rivers, horned animals, men bearing weapons, women, or royal households — so runs this traditional verse on the unpredictable.
💡 Wherever power is great and behaviour unpredictable — nature, weapons, politics — replace blind trust with respectful alertness.
ഋണകര്താ പിതാ ശത്രുര്മാതാ ച വ്യഭിചാരിണീ। ഭാര്യാ രൂപവതീ ശത്രുഃ പുത്രഃ ശത്രുരപണ്ഡിതഃ॥
ऋणकर्ता पिता शत्रुर्माता च व्यभिचारिणी। भार्या रूपवती शत्रुः पुत्रः शत्रुरपण्डितः॥
A father who leaves behind debt is an enemy, as is an unfaithful mother; a wife vain of her beauty and an uneducated son are likewise called enemies of the household.
💡 The most dangerous enemies are homegrown — unpaid debts, broken trust and neglected education harm a family more than outsiders can.
നാത്യന്തം സരലൈര്ഭാവ്യം ഗത്വാ പശ്യ വനസ്ഥലീമ്। ഛിദ്യന്തേ സരലാസ്തത്ര കുബ്ജാസ്തിഷ്ഠന്തി പാദപാഃ॥
नात्यन्तं सरलैर्भाव्यं गत्वा पश्य वनस्थलीम्। छिद्यन्ते सरलास्तत्र कुब्जास्तिष्ठन्ति पादपाः॥
Do not be excessively straightforward — go and look at the forest: the straight trees are cut down, while the crooked ones are left standing.
💡 Be honest, but not naive — in a competitive world, guard your interests and don't make yourself the easiest target.
