Sheetla Mata, 'the cool one,' is the Goddess (a form of Durga) who both wards off and heals fevers, pox and epidemic diseases — riding a donkey and bearing a broom, winnow, pot and neem leaves. On Sheetla Ashtami (Basoda), devotees offer her cooling, day-before food and worship her for the health and protection of their children and homes.

It is said that those stricken with fever, pox or skin disease who take Sheetla Mata's refuge are healed — even the leper made pure and the blind given sight. On Basoda, no fresh fire is lit; cool food prepared the day before is offered, and this aarti is sung for the family's health.

रतन सिंहासन शोभित श्वेत छत्र भाता । ऋद्धि सिद्धि चँवर ढुलावें जगमग छवि छाता ॥

Meaning:രത്നഖചിത സിംഹാസനത്തിൽ ശോഭിക്കുന്ന, ശ്വേത കുട തിളങ്ങുന്ന; ഋദ്ധി-സിദ്ധി ചാമരം വീശവേ, അങ്ങയുടെ പ്രകാശമാന രൂപം തിളങ്ങുന്നു.
विष्णु सेवत ठाढ़े सेवें शिव धाता । वेद पुराण वरणत पार नहीं पाता ॥

Meaning:വിഷ്ണു നിന്ന് സേവിക്കുന്നു, ശിവനും ബ്രഹ്മാവും സേവിക്കുന്നു; വേദങ്ങളും പുരാണങ്ങളും വർണിക്കുന്നു, എന്നിട്ടും അങ്ങയുടെ മഹിമയ്ക്ക് അന്തം കാണുന്നില്ല.
इन्द्र मृदंग बजावत चन्द्र वीणा हाथा । सूरज ताल बजावै नारद मुनि गाता ॥

घण्टा शङ्ख शहनाई बाजै मन भाता । करैं भक्तजन आरती लखि लखि हर्षाता ॥

Meaning:മണി, ശംഖ്, ഷെഹനായി മുഴങ്ങുന്നു, മനസ്സിന് ഇമ്പമേകുന്നു; ഭക്തർ ആരതി ചെയ്യുന്നു, അങ്ങയെ കണ്ടു കണ്ടു ആനന്ദിക്കുന്നു.
ब्रह्मरूप वरदानी तू ही तीन काल ज्ञाता । भक्तन को सुख देती मातु पिता भ्राता ॥

Meaning:ബ്രഹ്മരൂപിണി, വരദായിനി, അങ്ങ് മൂന്ന് കാലങ്ങളുടെയും ജ്ഞാത; ഭക്തർക്ക് അമ്മയും അച്ഛനും സഹോദരനുമായി സുഖം നൽകുന്നു.
जो जन ध्यान लगावे प्रेम शक्ति पाता । सकल मनोरथ पावे भवनिधि तर जाता ॥

Meaning:സ്നേഹത്തോടെ അങ്ങയിൽ മനസ്സുറപ്പിക്കുന്നവൻ ശക്തി നേടുന്നു; അവൻ സകല മനോരഥങ്ങളും നേടി ഭവസാഗരം കടക്കുന്നു.
रोगों से जो पीड़ित कोई शरण तेरी आता । कोढ़ी पावे निर्मल काया अन्ध नेत्र पाता ॥

Meaning:രോഗത്താൽ വലയുന്നവൻ അങ്ങയുടെ അഭയം തേടിയാൽ — കുഷ്ഠരോഗി നിർമല ദേഹം നേടുന്നു, അന്ധൻ കണ്ണുകൾ വീണ്ടെടുക്കുന്നു.
बाँझ पुत्र को पावे दारिद्र कट जाता । ताको भजै जो नाहीं सिर धुनि पछताता ॥

Meaning:വന്ധ്യ പുത്രനെ നേടുന്നു, ദാരിദ്ര്യം നീങ്ങുന്നു; അങ്ങയെ ഭജിക്കാത്തവൻ തല തല്ലി പശ്ചാത്തപിക്കുന്നു.
शीतल करती जननी तू ही है जग त्राता । उत्पत्ति व्याधि बिनाशन तू सब की घाता ॥

Benefits of Chanting ശ്രീ ശീതലാ മാതാ ആരതി
Sung to Sheetla Mata, the cooling Goddess (a form of Durga/Devi) who protects from and heals fevers, pox, measles and skin and epidemic diseases.
Chanted for health, recovery from illness, healthy children, and protection of the family from heat-borne and infectious diseases.
Especially worshipped on Sheetla Ashtami (Basoda), when cooling, day-old food is offered, and through the hot summer months.
How to Chant ശ്രീ ശീതലാ മാതാ ആരതി
Light a lamp (ghee or camphor) and, holding it, perform the aarti by circling it before the deity while singing, ideally with a bell. Offer flowers and prasad, and conclude by taking the aarti blessing (passing the hands over the flame and to the eyes). Sing with devotion and a steady heart.
