Chanakya Niti on Wife, Husband & Family

For Chanakya, the home is the first kingdom: govern it well and heaven is already here on earth. The Chanakya Niti says that where the child is dutiful, the spouse loving and harmonious, and there is contentment with honest earnings, no paradise need be sought elsewhere. Chanakya values character over beauty in choosing a life partner, mutual trust over convenience in keeping one, and warns that a hostile household corrodes life like slow poison. Read with today's sensibility, his verses on wife, husband and family point to one enduring truth: loyalty, harmony and shared values under one roof are the real wealth of a household.

Chanakya Niti 2.3

He whose child is obedient, whose spouse moves in harmony with him, and who is content with his own earnings — for him, heaven is right here on earth.

💡 A peaceful home built on cooperation and contentment beats any luxury money can buy.

Chanakya Niti 2.4

True children are those devoted to their parents; a true father is he who nurtures; a true friend is one in whom you can trust; and a true wife is she in whose company there is peace and joy.

💡 Family roles are earned by conduct, not conferred by titles — devotion, care, trust and peace define them.

A true wife is pure of heart and skilled in her duties, devoted and loving to her husband, and always truthful.

💡 Loyalty, honesty and everyday care — from both partners — are the pillars a marriage actually stands on.

Chanakya Niti 1.14

The wise should marry a girl of good family even if she is not beautiful, rather than a beautiful one from an unworthy family — marriage succeeds best between families of similar values.

💡 Marry into shared values and character — upbringing outlasts appearance.

Chanakya Niti 1.5

A wicked spouse, a deceitful friend, an insolent servant, and living in a house where a serpent dwells — these are nothing but death, without doubt.

💡 A toxic household is a slow poison — repair or step away from relationships that endanger your peace.
