Frequently Asked Questions

What is Gowri Panchangam?

Gowri Panchangam (Nalla Neram) divides the day (sunrise to sunset) and night (sunset to next sunrise) into eight equal parts of about 1½ hours each. Every part is an auspicious or inauspicious window, making it easy to pick a good time — Nalla Neram — to begin work.

Which are the good periods (Nalla Neram)?

Amirdha, Dhanam, Uthi, Laabam and Sugam are the auspicious Nalla Neram periods. Rogam, Soram and Visham are inauspicious and best avoided. Amirdha is regarded as the very best.

How is Gowri Panchangam different from Choghadiya?

Both split day and night into eight parts. Gowri Panchangam — popular in Tamil Nadu and South India — names its periods Amirdha, Rogam, Laabam and so on, with the Visham period coinciding with Rahu Kaalam. Choghadiya (Amrit, Shubh, Labh…) is more common in North and West India.
