✦ Meaning
The Brihaspati Gayatri Mantra is the Vedic Gayatri-meter prayer to Brihaspati (Guru / Jupiter), the planet of wisdom, dharma, knowledge and fortune among the Navagraha, and the preceptor (guru) of the gods. Addressed as the bull-bannered, staff-bearing teacher, Jupiter is invoked to bless and illumine the intellect. It is chanted for wisdom, good fortune, prosperity, spiritual growth, success in education, and to strengthen a weak Jupiter.
Origin & Story
The Gayatri mantra of Brihaspati (Jupiter), among the Navagraha Gayatris · Traditional (Vedic)
Each of the nine planets (Navagraha) has its own Gayatri — a prayer in the sacred Gayatri meter invoking that graha to bestow its blessings and illumine the intellect. The Brihaspati Gayatri invokes Jupiter, the most benefic planet and the preceptor (guru) of the gods, depicted with a bull on his banner and a staff in his hand. As the lord of wisdom, dharma, fortune and growth, Jupiter is honoured through this mantra in the timeless pattern "Vidmahe… Dhimahi… Prachodayat," especially on Thursdays.
✦ As told in scripture
Brihaspati, the divine guru, is said to guide the gods with his wise counsel and to bestow every auspiciousness on his devotees; those seeking wisdom, fortune, timely marriage or progeny are traditionally counselled to chant the Brihaspati Gayatri on Thursdays, and many report growth in knowledge, prosperity and good fortune.
