Origin & Story

Krishna Yajurveda, Taittiriya Samhita 4.7 (Chamakaprashna) ยท Vedic rishis (apaurusheya โ€” received, not composed) ยท c. 1200-1000 BCE

Chamakam forms the seventh prashna of the fourth kanda of the Taittiriya Samhita, paired since Vedic times with the Rudram-Namakam of the fifth prashna. Where Namakam bows, Chamakam asks: in eleven anuvakas the devotee requests from Rudra everything a human life can need โ€” the breaths and the senses, grains and cattle, gold and dwelling, courage and fame, truth and immortality โ€” each item joined by the refrain 'cha me', 'and may this be mine'. The hymn ends with a meditation on the numbers that build the cosmos and the prayer to think, speak and carry only honey โ€” sweetness โ€” to gods and men. It remains the most complete 'wish-list' in the Vedas, sanctified because every wish is asked through the sacrifice.

โœฆ As told in scripture

Chamakam may be the most comprehensive prayer ever composed: in eleven short sections it asks for 347 distinct blessings โ€” from breakfast grains and farm animals to fearlessness, truth and immortality. Its genius is the tiny refrain 'cha me' ('and this too be mine'), which turns an inventory of human needs into a meditation: everything, from lentils to liberation, is received from the same divine source. Its closing ladder of numbers โ€” odd to 33, even to 48 โ€” has been read for centuries as a symbolic map of how the One unfolds into the manifold universe.

Then it rises to the inner sacrifice: may my life be perfected through yajna, my prana, apana and vyana, my eye and my ear, my mind and my speech, my very self โ€” may the sacrifice itself be perfected through sacrifice.

Meaning:The final anuvaka chants the mystical ladder of numbers โ€” one, three, five, up to thirty-three (the odd numbers, seen as the divine principles), and four, eight, twelve up to forty-eight (the even numbers, the manifest world) โ€” asking that all the graded powers of creation be harmonised for the seeker. It closes by invoking food and its source, the head of all things, the lords of the ends and of the worlds, and then the beautiful Ida passage: 'May I think honey, beget honey, speak honey; may I bear to the gods speech full of honey, and may the gods and the fathers rejoice in me.' Om, peace, peace, peace.

How to Chant Sri Rudram Chamakam

Repetitions1times
Best TimeImmediately after chanting Sri Rudram Namakam; mornings, Pradosham, Mondays, Shivaratri and the month of Shravana

Chamakam is always chanted after Namakam โ€” first the salutations, then the asking. It is a Vedic chant with svaras (tonal accents), so learn it from a qualified teacher or follow a traditional recitation closely. Sit facing east or north after a bath, ideally before a Shivalinga or the sacrificial fire. In the Ekadasha Rudram tradition, one anuvaka of Chamakam is chanted after each complete recitation of Namakam, so that eleven Namakams complete one Chamakam.

Frequently Asked Questions

This page shows the complete Sri Rudram Chamakam written in the Grantha script โ€” the same Sanskrit/Hindi verses, transliterated character-by-character so you can read and chant comfortably. Tap any line (or the โ–ถ button) to hear it recited aloud.
Yes โ€” only the script changes; the words and their meaning are the original. The verse-by-verse meaning, benefits and how-to-chant guidance on this page apply exactly the same.
Chamakam is the second part of the Sri Rudram, from the Krishna Yajurveda, Taittiriya Samhita (4.7). It is named after its refrain 'cha me' โ€” 'and may this be mine' โ€” through which the devotee asks Rudra for every blessing: health, food, wealth, cattle, courage, knowledge, long life and immortality.
Namakam (Taittiriya Samhita 4.5) is the hymn of salutations โ€” 'namah' โ€” which pacifies and worships Rudra in all his forms. Chamakam (4.7) is the hymn of asking โ€” 'cha me' โ€” which requests the blessings that flow once Rudra is pleased. Together they form the complete Rudram: surrender first, then grace.
The eleventh anuvaka lists the odd numbers 1 to 33 and the multiples of four from 4 to 48. Commentators explain the odd series as the principles of the unmanifest (tattvas, deities) and the even series as the manifest creation; chanting them harmonises the entire ladder of existence, from the One to the many.
Traditionally Chamakam follows Namakam, since one first propitiates Rudra and only then asks for blessings. In practice, individual anuvakas of Chamakam are also used in specific homas, but the full Namakam-Chamakam pair is the standard and recommended form.
No. Alongside food, wealth and cattle it asks for truth (ritam), immortality (amritam), fearlessness, faith, knowledge and the perfection of the inner sacrifice โ€” 'may my self be perfected through yajna'. It sanctifies worldly life by asking that everything be received through, and offered back into, the divine.
