The Vastoshpati Sukta of the Rig Veda is a prayer to the guardian spirit of the homestead. In later tradition this deity is identified with the Vastu Purusha — born, according to the Matsya and other Puranas, when a great being arising from Shiva's perspiration (or from a slain demon) was pinned face-down to the earth by the gods, who each took their place upon his body. Pleased, the gods granted that he would forever preside over dwellings, and that whoever honoured him with the Vastu Shanti before building or entering a home would prosper. These Vedic verses remain the heart of that ceremony, invoking the lord of the dwelling for protection and abundance.

వాస్తోష్పతే ప్రతి జానీహ్యస్మాన్త్స్వావేశో అనమీవో భవా నః। యత్త్వేమహే ప్రతి తన్నో జుషస్వ శం నో భవ ద్విపదే శం చతుష్పదే॥

Vāstoṣpate prati jānīhy asmān svāveśo anamīvo bhavā naḥ। Yat tvemahe prati tan no juṣasva śaṁ no bhava dvipade śaṁ catuṣpade॥

అర్థం:O Vastoshpati, lord of the dwelling, recognise us as your own; be welcoming and free of all disease for us. Whatever we ask of you, graciously grant; be a source of well-being to our people and to our animals. O Vastoshpati, be our promoter and protector; increaser of our household wealth, our cattle and our horses, O radiant one. May we abide, undecaying, in your friendship; cherish us as a father cherishes his sons.

This mantra is central to the Vastu Shanti ritual, usually performed by a priest as part of a homa (fire offering) before or just after first entering a new home on an auspicious day. It is recited during Griha Pravesh (entering a new home) and the Vastu Shanti ceremony to invoke Vastoshpati, the deity of the dwelling, asking for a disease-free, peaceful and prosperous home and to pacify any Vastu doshas (imbalances) in the building.
