✦ Meaning
This is the great healing mantra of Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician who arose from the churning of the ocean bearing the pot of amrita, the nectar of immortality. The mantra salutes Him as Vasudeva and the wielder of the Sudarshana, the destroyer of all diseases and Lord of the three worlds. It is the foremost prayer in the Ayurvedic and Vaishnava traditions for health, recovery from illness and protection of body and mind.
Origin & Story
Ayurvedic and Vaishnava tradition; the Maha Dhanvantari mantra invoked for healing and arogya · Unknown (traditional) · Ancient
When the gods and demons churned the ocean of milk (Samudra Manthana) for the nectar of immortality, Lord Dhanvantari rose from the waters carrying the pot of amrita — the very nectar that conquers disease and death. Revered as the originator of Ayurveda, He is invoked at the start of healing and medicine. This Maha mantra unites His identity as the divine physician with the protective Sudarshana and the supremacy of Maha Vishnu, making it a complete prayer for the destruction of all illness.
✦ As told in scripture
Vaidyas and devotees have long chanted this mantra over medicines and sacred water before administering them, holding that the Lord who carries the pot of amrita infuses healing into them. On Dhanteras especially, families invoke Dhanvantari with this mantra for a year free of disease, trusting Him as the destroyer of all afflictions.
