Meaning

The Shukra Gayatri Mantra is the Vedic Gayatri-meter prayer to Shukra (Venus), the planet of love, beauty, luxury, art and prosperity among the Navagraha, and the preceptor (guru) of the asuras. Addressed as the horse-bannered, bow-bearing one, Venus is invoked to bless and illumine the intellect. It is chanted for love and harmony in relationships, wealth, comfort, artistic talent, and to strengthen a weak Venus.

Origin & Story

The Gayatri mantra of Shukra (Venus), among the Navagraha Gayatris · Traditional (Vedic)

Each of the nine planets (Navagraha) has its own Gayatri — a prayer in the sacred Gayatri meter invoking that graha to bestow its blessings and illumine the intellect. The Shukra Gayatri invokes Venus, the planet of love, beauty, art and prosperity and the preceptor of the asuras, depicted with a horse on his banner and a bow in his hand. As the lord of harmony, refinement and material happiness, Venus is honoured through this mantra in the timeless pattern "Vidmahe… Dhimahi… Prachodayat," especially on Fridays.

As told in scripture

Shukra, the wise guru of the asuras, is said in the Puranas to possess the Sanjivani knowledge that restores life; those troubled by a weak Venus or disharmony in love are traditionally counselled to chant the Shukra Gayatri on Fridays, and many report renewed warmth in relationships and growing prosperity and comfort.
