The Annapurna Aarti glorifies Maa Annapurna, the form of Goddess Parvati who is the giver of food and nourishment to the whole world. Annapurna, the food-giving form of Parvati, is the presiding goddess of Kashi (Varanasi), where her temple stands beside that of Lord Kashi Vishwanath. According to tradition, Shiva himself approached her with a begging bowl to teach the world that food and matter are sacred and not mere illusion. This aarti, sung across North Indian homes and temples, celebrates her as the inexhaustible nourisher who ensures that no devotee goes hungry.

Many devotees offer freshly cooked food (bhog) or grains before the goddess and later distribute it as prasad. Sing with devotion while circling the lamp clockwise and ringing a bell. It is traditional to keep some food in the kitchen as her share and to feed the hungry (anna-daan) after the worship.
