Meaning

Krishna assures Arjuna that if he keeps his mind fixed on the Lord, he will, by divine grace, cross over all obstacles and difficulties. But he warns that if Arjuna refuses to listen out of egoism, he will come to ruin. This verse highlights the power of God's grace to carry the devotee past every hardship, and the danger of egoistic self-reliance that closes the heart to wisdom.

Origin & Story

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18, Verse 58 · Sage Veda Vyasa (Mahabharata, Bhishma Parva) · Ancient (text compiled c. 5th–2nd century BCE)

In the eighteenth chapter, Moksha Sannyasa Yoga, as Krishna concludes His teaching on devotion and surrender, He assures Arjuna that with his mind fixed on the Lord he will cross all obstacles by grace, while warning that egoistic refusal to heed the teaching leads to ruin — a call to humble, mindful surrender.

As told in scripture

Devotees hold that those who keep their minds fixed on the Lord find, again and again, that seemingly impossible obstacles dissolve by His grace — for the Lord has promised to carry across every difficulty the one who depends on Him.

Egoism (ahankara) makes one rely solely on oneself and refuse to heed divine wisdom. By closing the heart to the Lord's guidance and grace, the proud person loses the very help that could carry them through obstacles, and so comes to grief.
