How to Chant Brahma Gayatri Mantra
Instructions
After a bath, sit facing east with a calm mind and chant "Om Vedatmanaya Vidmahe Hiranyagarbhaya Dhimahi. Tanno Brahma Prachodayat" 108 times on a mala. Like all Gayatri mantras it is ideally recited at the sandhya times (dawn, midday, dusk). Hold the creator Brahma, the soul of the Vedas, in the heart. It may be chanted daily, alongside the universal Gayatri Mantra, and is often recited before study, teaching or any creative undertaking.
Spiritual Significance
The Vedas describe Hiranyagarbha — the golden womb identified with Brahma — as that which arose in the beginning and upheld the heavens and the earth; meditating on this creative source through the Brahma Gayatri is traditionally said to awaken insight, memory and original thought in the sincere seeker of knowledge.
Origin & History
Source: The Gayatri mantra of Brahma
Author: Traditional (Vedic)
Beyond the universal Gayatri Mantra, the Vedic tradition gives each great deity its own Gayatri — a prayer in the sacred Gayatri meter calling upon that deity to illumine the intellect. The Brahma Gayatri invokes Brahma, the creator of the universe, as the very soul of the Vedas (Vedatma) and as Hiranyagarbha, the golden cosmic womb from which all creation springs. Following the timeless pattern "Vidmahe… Dhimahi… Prachodayat," it is chanted above all for wisdom, knowledge and creative power.
