Verse 1
अस्य श्री चण्डी कवचस्य ब्रह्मा ऋषिः। अनुष्टुप् छन्दः। चामुण्डा देवता। अंगन्यासोक्तमातरो बीजम्। दिग्बन्धदेवतास्तत्त्वम्। श्री जगदम्बाप्रीत्यर्थे सप्तशतीपाठाङ्गत्वेन जपे विनियोगः॥
Om Asya Shri Chandi Kavachasya Brahma Rishiph Anushtup Chhandah Chamunda Devata Anganyasokta Mataro Bijam Digbandha Devatas Tattvam Shri Jagadamba Prityarthe Saptashati Pathangtvena Jape Viniyogah
Om. Of this Shri Chandi Kavach, the sage is Brahma. The meter is Anushtup. The deity is Chamunda. The seed is the Matrikas mentioned in the Anganyasa. The essence is the deities of the directional bonds. The application is for the recitation as part of the Saptashati, for the pleasure of Shri Jagadamba.
Verse 2
नमश्चण्डिकायै मार्कण्डेय उवाच यद्गुह्यं परमं लोके सर्वरक्षाकरं नृणाम्। यन्न कस्यचिदाख्यातं तन्मे ब्रूहि पितामह॥
Om Namash Chandikayai Markandeya Uvacha — Yad Guhyam Paramam Loke Sarva Raksha Karam Nrinam Yanna Kasyachid Akhyatam Tanme Bruhi Pitamaha
Om, salutations to Chandika. Markandeya said: What is the supreme secret in this world that protects all human beings, that has never been revealed to anyone — please tell me, O Grandfather (Brahma).
Verse 3
ब्रह्मोवाच अस्ति गुह्यतमं विप्र सर्वभूतोपकारकम्। देव्यास्तु कवचं पुण्यं तच्छृणुष्व महामुने॥
Brahma Uvacha — Asti Guhyatamam Vipra Sarva Bhutopakaarakam Devyas Tu Kavacham Punyam Tat Shrinushva Mahamune
Brahma said: There exists, O sage, a most secret and sacred kavach of the Devi that benefits all beings. Listen to it, O great sage.
Verse 4
प्रथमं शैलपुत्री द्वितीयं ब्रह्मचारिणी। तृतीयं चन्द्रघण्टेति कूष्माण्डेति चतुर्थकम्॥
Prathamam Shailaputri Cha Dvitiyam Brahmacharini Tritiyam Chandraghanteti Kushmandeti Chaturthakam
The first is Shailaputri, the second Brahmacharini. The third is Chandraghanta, the fourth Kushmanda.
Verse 5
पञ्चमं स्कन्दमातेति षष्ठं कात्यायनीति च। सप्तमं कालरात्रीति महागौरीति चाष्टमम्॥
Panchamam Skanda Mateti Shashtham Katyayani Ti Cha Saptamam Kalaratri Ti Mahagauri Ti Chashtamam
The fifth is Skandamata, the sixth Katyayani. The seventh is Kalaratri, the eighth Mahagauri.
Verse 6
नवमं सिद्धिदात्री नवदुर्गाः प्रकीर्तिताः। उक्तान्येतानि नामानि ब्रह्मणैव महात्मना॥
Navamam Siddhidatri Cha Nava Durgah Prakirtitah Uktanyetani Namani Brahmanaiva Mahatmana
The ninth is Siddhidatri — these are proclaimed as the nine Durgas. These names were spoken by the great-souled Brahma himself.
Verse 7
शूलेन पाहि नो देवि पाहि खड्गेन चाम्बिके। घण्टास्वनेन नः पाहि चापज्यानिःस्वनेन च॥
Shulena Pahi No Devi Pahi Khadgena Chambike Ghanta Swanena Nah Pahi Chapajya Nihswanena Cha
Protect us with your trident, O Devi! Protect us with your sword, O Ambika! Protect us with the sound of your bell, and with the twang of your bowstring!
Verse 8
प्राच्यां रक्षतु मामैन्द्री आग्नेय्यामग्निदेवता। दक्षिणे चावतु वाराही नैऋत्यामसिधारिणी॥
Prachyam Rakshatu Mam Aindri Agneyam Agni Devata Dakshine Chavatu Varahi Nairityam Asi Dharini
In the East may Aindri protect me, in the South-east the Fire Goddess. In the South may Varahi protect me, in the South-west the Sword-bearer.
Verse 9
प्रतीच्यां वारुणी रक्षेद्वायव्यां मृगवाहिनी। उदीच्यां पातु कौमारी ऐशान्यां शूलधारिणी॥
Pratichyam Varuni Rakshed Vayavyam Mrigavahini Udichyam Patu Kaumari Aishanyam Shuladharini
In the West may Varuni protect me, in the North-west the Deer-rider. In the North may Kaumari protect me, in the North-east the Trident-bearer.
Verse 10
ऊर्ध्वं ब्रह्माणी मे रक्षेदधस्ताद्वैष्णवी तथा। एवं दश दिशो रक्षेच्चामुण्डा शववाहना॥
Urdhvam Brahmani Me Rakshed Adhastad Vaishnavi Tatha Evam Dasha Disho Rakshet Chamunda Shava Vahana
Above may Brahmani protect me, below may Vaishnavi protect me. Thus may Chamunda, who rides upon a corpse, protect all ten directions.
Verse 11
जया मे चाग्रतः पातु विजया पातु पृष्ठतः। अजिता वामपार्श्वे तु दक्षिणे चापराजिता॥
Jaya Me Chagratah Patu Vijaya Patu Prishthatah Ajita Vama Parshve Tu Dakshine Cha Aparajita
May Jaya protect me from the front, may Vijaya protect me from behind. May Ajita protect my left side, and Aparajita my right.
Verse 12
शिखामुद्योतिनी रक्षेदुमा मूर्ध्नि व्यवस्थिता। मालाधरी ललाटे भ्रुवौ रक्षेद्यशस्विनी॥
Shikham Udyotini Rakshed Uma Murdhni Vyavasthita Maladhari Lalate Cha Bhruvau Rakshed Yashaswini
May Udyotini protect the crown of my head. May Uma, stationed at the top, protect my head. May Maladhari protect my forehead, and Yashaswini my eyebrows.
Verse 13
त्रिनेत्रा भ्रुवोर्मध्ये यमघण्टा नासिके। शंखिनी चक्षुषोर्मध्ये श्रोत्रयोर्द्वारवासिनी॥
Trinetra Cha Bhruvor Madhye Yamaghanta Cha Nasike Shankhini Chakshushor Madhye Shrotrayor Dvaravasini
May Trinetra (the three-eyed one) protect the space between my brows. May Yamaghanta protect my nose. May Shankhini protect the space between my eyes, and Dvaravasini my ears.
Verse 14
कपोलौ कालिका रक्षेत्कर्णमूले तु शांकरी। नासिकायां सुगन्धा उत्तरोष्ठे चर्चिका॥
Kapolau Kalika Rakshet Karnamule Tu Shankari Nasikayam Sugandha Cha Uttaroshthe Cha Charchika
May Kalika protect my cheeks, and Shankari the base of my ears. May Sugandha protect my nostrils, and Charchika my upper lip.
Verse 15
अधरे चामृतकला जिह्वायां सरस्वती। दन्तान् रक्षतु कौमारी कण्ठदेशे तु चण्डिका॥
Adhare Chamrita Kala Jihvayam Cha Saraswati Dantan Rakshatu Kaumari Kantha Deshe Tu Chandika
May Amritakala protect my lower lip, and Saraswati my tongue. May Kaumari protect my teeth, and Chandika the region of my throat.
Verse 16
घण्टिकां चित्रघण्टा महामाया तालुके। कामाक्षी चिबुकं रक्षेद्वाचं मे सर्वमंगला॥
Ghantikam Chitraghanta Cha Mahamaya Cha Taluke Kamakshi Chibukam Rakshed Vacham Me Sarvamangala
May Chitraghanta protect my voice-box, and Mahamaya my palate. May Kamakshi protect my chin, and Sarvamangala protect my speech.
Verse 17
ग्रीवायां भद्रकाली पृष्ठवंशे धनुर्धरी। नीलग्रीवा बहिःकण्ठे नलिकां नलकूबरी॥
Grivayam Bhadrakali cha prishthavamshe Dhanurdhari; Nilagriva bahihkanthe nalikam Nalakubari.
May Bhadrakali protect my neck and Dhanurdhari my spine; may Nilagriva protect the outer throat and Nalakubari the windpipe.
Verse 18
स्कन्धयोः खड्गिनी रक्षेद् बाहू मे वज्रधारिणी। हस्तयोर्दण्डिनी रक्षेदम्बिका चाङ्गुलीस्तथा॥
Skandhayoh Khadgini rakshed bahu me Vajradharini; Hastayor Dandini rakshed Ambika changulistatha.
May Khadgini protect my shoulders and Vajradharini my arms; may Dandini protect my hands and Ambika my fingers.
Verse 19
नखाञ्छूलेश्वरी रक्षेत् कुक्षौ रक्षेन्नलेश्वरी। स्तनौ रक्षेन्महालक्ष्मीर्मनःशोकविनाशिनी॥
Nakhanchhuleshwari rakshet kukshau rakshen Naleshwari; Stanau rakshen Mahalakshmir manahshokavinashini.
May Shuleshwari protect my nails and Naleshwari my belly; may Mahalakshmi protect my breasts and the destroyer of mental grief my heart.
Verse 20
हृदये ललिता देवी उदरे शूलधारिणी। नाभौ कामिनी रक्षेद्गुह्यं गुह्येश्वरी तथा॥
Hridaye Lalita Devi udare Shuladharini; Nabhau cha Kamini rakshed guhyam Guhyeshwari tatha.
May Lalita Devi dwell in my heart and Shuladharini in my belly; may Kamini protect my navel and Guhyeshwari my private parts.
Verse 21
पूतना कामिका मेढ्रं गुदे महिषवाहिनी। कट्यां भगवती रक्षेज्जानुनी विन्ध्यवासिनी॥
Putana Kamika medhram gude Mahishavahini; Katyam Bhagavati rakshej januni Vindhyavasini.
May Kamika protect the generative organ and Mahishavahini the rectum; may Bhagavati protect my waist and Vindhyavasini my knees.
Verse 22
जङ्घे महाबला प्रोक्ता सर्वकामप्रदायिनी। गुल्फयोर्नारसिंही पादौ चामिततेजसी॥
Janghe Mahabala prokta sarvakamapradayini; Gulphayor Narasimhi cha padau chamitatejasi.
May Mahabala, giver of all desires, guard my shins; may Narasimhi protect my ankles and the one of boundless splendour my feet.
Verse 23
पादाङ्गुलीः श्रीर्मे रक्षेत्पादाधस्तलवासिनी। नखान्दंष्ट्राकराली केशांश्चैवोर्ध्वकेशिनी॥
Padangulih Shrir me rakshet padadhastalavasini; Nakhan Damshtrakarali cha keshanshchaivordhvakeshini.
May Shri protect my toes and Talavasini the soles of my feet; may Damshtrakarali protect my nails and Urdhvakeshini my hair.
Verse 24
रोमकूपेषु कौबेरी त्वचं वागीश्वरी तथा। रक्तमज्जावसामांसान्यस्थिमेदांसि पार्वती॥
Romakupeshu Kauberi tvacham Vagishwari tatha; Raktamajjavasamamsanyasthimedamsi Parvati.
May Kauberi protect my pores and Vagishwari my skin; may Parvati guard my blood, marrow, fat, flesh, bones and tissue.
Verse 25
अन्त्राणि कालरात्रिश्च पित्तं मुकुटेश्वरी। पद्मावती पद्मकोशे कफे चूडामणिस्तथा॥
Antrani Kalaratrishcha pittam cha Mukuteshwari; Padmavati padmakoshe kaphe Chudamanistatha.
May Kalaratri protect my entrails and Mukuteshwari my bile; may Padmavati dwell in the lotus-centres and Chudamani in the phlegm.
Verse 26
ज्वालामुखी नखज्वाला अभेद्या सर्वसन्धिषु। शुक्रं ब्रह्माणी मे रक्षेच्छायां छत्रेश्वरी तथा॥
Jvalamukhi nakhajvala Abhedya sarvasandhishu; Shukram Brahmani me rakshech chhayam Chhatreshwari tatha.
May Jvalamukhi guard the lustre of my nails and Abhedya all my joints; may Brahmani protect my vital seed and Chhatreshwari my shadow.
Verse 27
अहङ्कारं मनो बुद्धिं रक्ष मे धर्मचारिणि। प्राणापानौ तथा व्यानं समानोदानमेव च॥
Ahankaram mano buddhim raksha me Dharmacharini; Pranapanau tatha vyanam samanodanameva cha.
O Dharmacharini, protect my ego, mind and intellect; and guard my prana, apana, vyana, samana and udana (the vital airs).
Verse 28
वज्रहस्ता मे रक्षेत्प्राणं कल्याणशोभना। रसे रूपे गन्धे शब्दे स्पर्शे योगिनी॥
Vajrahasta cha me rakshet pranam Kalyanashobhana; Rase rupe cha gandhe cha shabde sparshe cha Yogini.
May Vajrahasta, the auspicious and lovely one, protect my life-breath; may Yogini guard my senses of taste, sight, smell, sound and touch.
Verse 29
सत्त्वं रजस्तमश्चैव रक्षेन्नारायणी सदा। आयू रक्षतु वाराही धर्मं रक्षतु वैष्णवी॥
Sattvam rajastamashchaiva rakshen Narayani sada; Ayu rakshatu Varahi dharmam rakshatu Vaishnavi.
May Narayani ever guard my sattva, rajas and tamas; may Varahi protect my lifespan and Vaishnavi my righteousness.
Verse 30
यशः कीर्तिं लक्ष्मीं धनं विद्यां चक्रिणी। गोत्रमिन्द्राणी मे रक्षेत्पशून्मे रक्ष चण्डिके॥
Yashah kirtim cha Lakshmim cha dhanam vidyam cha Chakrini; Gotram Indrani me rakshet pashun me raksha Chandike.
May Chakrini guard my fame, renown, fortune, wealth and learning; may Indrani protect my lineage, and you, O Chandika, protect my cattle.
Verse 31
पुत्रान् रक्षेन्महालक्ष्मीर्भार्यां रक्षतु भैरवी। पन्थानं सुपथा रक्षेन्मार्गं क्षेमकरी तथा॥
Putran rakshen Mahalakshmir bharyam rakshatu Bhairavi; Panthanam Supatha rakshen margam Kshemakari tatha.
May Mahalakshmi protect my sons and Bhairavi my wife; may Supatha guard my path and Kshemakari my road.
Verse 32
राजद्वारे महालक्ष्मीर्विजया सर्वतः स्थिता। रक्षाहीनं तु यत्स्थानं वर्जितं कवचेन तु॥
Rajadvare Mahalakshmir Vijaya sarvatah sthita; Rakshahinam tu yatsthanam varjitam kavachena tu.
May Mahalakshmi guard me at the royal gate, and Vijaya, present everywhere — and whatever place is left unprotected, omitted by this armour,
Verse 33
तत्सर्वं रक्ष मे देवि जयन्ती पापनाशिनी। पदमेकं गच्छेत्तु यदीच्छेच्छुभमात्मनः॥
Tatsarvam raksha me Devi Jayanti papanashini; Padamekam na gachchhet tu yadichchhech chubhamatmanah.
— all that protect, O Devi Jayanti, destroyer of sin. Let one who desires his own welfare not go even a single step
Verse 34
कवचेनावृतो नित्यं यत्र यत्राधिगच्छति। तत्र तत्रार्थलाभश्च विजयः सार्वकामिकः॥
Kavachenavrito nityam yatra yatradhigachchhati; Tatra tatrarthalabhashcha vijayah sarvakamikah.
without being ever wrapped in this armour; wherever he then goes, there he gains wealth and victory, and the fulfilment of every desire.
Verse 35
यं यं कामयते कामं तं तं प्राप्नोति निश्चितम्। परमैश्वर्यमतुलं प्राप्स्यते भूतले पुमान्॥
Yam yam kamayate kamam tam tam prapnoti nishchitam; Paramaishvaryamatulam prapsyate bhutale puman.
Whatever desire he longs for, that he certainly obtains; such a person attains unmatched, supreme prosperity on earth.
Verse 36
निर्भयो जायते मर्त्यः सङ्ग्रामेष्वपराजितः। त्रैलोक्ये तु भवेत्पूज्यः कवचेनावृतः पुमान्॥
Nirbhayo jayate martyah sangrameshvaparajitah; Trailokye tu bhavet pujyah kavachenavritah puman.
The mortal becomes fearless and unconquered in battle; the man wrapped in this armour becomes worthy of worship in all three worlds.
Verse 37
इदं तु देव्याः कवचं देवानामपि दुर्लभम्। यः पठेत्प्रयतो नित्यं त्रिसन्ध्यं श्रद्धयान्वितः॥
Idam tu Devyah kavacham devanamapi durlabham; Yah pathet prayato nityam trisandhyam shraddhayanvitah.
This armour of the Goddess is hard to attain even for the gods. Whoever, self-controlled, recites it daily at the three junctures with faith,
Verse 38
दैवी कला भवेत्तस्य त्रैलोक्येष्वपराजितः। जीवेद्वर्षशतं साग्रमपमृत्युविवर्जितः॥
Daivi kala bhavet tasya trailokyeshvaparajitah; Jived varshashatam sagram apamrityuvivarjitah.
acquires a divine radiance, becomes unconquered in the three worlds, and lives a full hundred years and more, free from untimely death.
Verse 39
नश्यन्ति व्याधयः सर्वे लूताविस्फोटकादयः। स्थावरं जङ्गमं वापि कृत्रिमं चापि यद्विषम्॥
Nashyanti vyadhayah sarve lutavisphotakadayah; Sthavaram jangamam vapi kritrimam chapi yadvisham.
All diseases perish — boils, eruptions and the rest; and every poison, whether of plants, of creatures, or artificially made,
Verse 40
अभिचाराणि सर्वाणि मन्त्रयन्त्राणि भूतले। भूचराः खेचराश्चैव जलजाश्चोपदेशिकाः॥
Abhicharani sarvani mantrayantrani bhutale; Bhucharah khecharashchaiva jalajashchopadeshikah.
all malevolent magic, all spells and mystic diagrams upon the earth, all beings that move on land, in the sky, in water, and those conjured by instruction,
Verse 41
सहजाः कुलजा मालाः शाकिनी डाकिनी तथा। अन्तरिक्षचरा घोरा डाकिन्यश्च महाबलाः॥
Sahajah kulaja malah Shakini Dakini tatha; Antarikshachara ghora Dakinyashcha mahabalah.
the innate and clan-born evil spirits, the Shakinis and Dakinis, and the terrible, mighty Dakinis that roam the mid-air —
Verse 42
ग्रहभूतपिशाचाश्च यक्षगन्धर्वराक्षसाः। ब्रह्मराक्षसवेतालाः कूष्माण्डा भैरवादयः॥
Grahabhutapishachashcha yakshagandharvarakshasah; Brahmarakshasavetalah kushmanda Bhairavadayah.
the planetary spirits, ghosts and ghouls, yakshas, gandharvas and rakshasas, brahma-rakshasas, vetalas, kushmandas, bhairavas and the like —
Verse 43
नश्यन्ति दर्शनात्तस्य कवचे हृदि संस्थिते। मानोन्नतिर्भवेद्राज्ञस्तेजोवृद्धिकरं परम्॥
Nashyanti darshanat tasya kavache hridi samsthite; Manonnatirbhaved rajnastejovriddhikaram param.
all perish at the mere sight of him in whose heart this armour abides. It brings the highest honour from kings and a great increase of vigour.
Verse 44
यशसा वर्धते सोऽपि कीर्तिमण्डितभूतले। जपेत्सप्तशतीं चण्डीं कृत्वा तु कवचं पुरा॥
Yashasa vardhate so'pi kirtimanditabhutale; Japet saptashatim Chandim kritva tu kavacham pura.
He too grows in glory, adorning the earth with his renown. One should recite the Chandi Saptashati only after first reciting this armour.
Verse 45
यावद्भूमण्डलं धत्ते सशैलवनकाननम्। तावत्तिष्ठति मेदिन्यां सन्ततिः पुत्रपौत्रकी॥
Yavad bhumandalam dhatte sashailavanakananam; Tavat tishthati medinyam santatih putrapautraki.
As long as the earth endures with its mountains, forests and groves, so long does his line of sons and grandsons abide upon the earth.
Verse 46
देहान्ते परमं स्थानं यत्सुरैरपि दुर्लभम्। प्राप्नोति पुरुषो नित्यं महामायाप्रसादतः॥
Dehante paramam sthanam yatsurairapi durlabham; Prapnoti purusho nityam Mahamayaprasadatah.
At the body's end he attains the supreme abode, hard to reach even for the gods — this such a person ever gains, by the grace of Mahamaya;
Verse 47
लभते परमं रूपं शिवेन सह मोदते॥ इति श्रीवाराहपुराणे हरिहरब्रह्मविरचितं देव्याः कवचं सम्पूर्णम्
Labhate paramam rupam Shivena saha modate. Iti shri Varahapurane Hariharabrahmavirachitam Devyah kavacham sampurnam.
he attains a supreme form and rejoices forever together with Shiva. Thus ends the Kavacha of the Goddess, composed by Hari, Hara and Brahma, in the Varaha Purana.
