Author: Unknown (Shakta-Vaishnava devotional tradition)

Period: Classical / Puranic

Goddess Mahalakshmi, who arose radiant from the churning of the milk-ocean and chose Vishnu as her Lord, is worshipped as the giver of all prosperity and auspiciousness. The seed mantra 'Om Shrim Hrim Shrim… Mahalakshmyai Namah' belongs to the tradition of Lakshmi-Upasana, where the beej 'Shrim' is held to be Lakshmi's very sound-body. The accompanying verse 'Namaste-stu Mahamaye', from the celebrated Mahalakshmi Ashtaka, salutes her seated on the throne of Shri and bearing the emblems of Vishnu. On Diwali night, the darkest Amavasya of Kartik, devotees light rows of lamps and chant this mantra to welcome Lakshmi into their homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best mantra for Lakshmi Puja on Diwali?
The mantra 'Om Shrim Hrim Shrim Kamale Kamalalaye Praseeda Praseeda — Om Shrim Hrim Shrim Mahalakshmyai Namah' is among the most widely used for Diwali and Dhanteras Lakshmi Puja. It combines Lakshmi's seed syllables with a prayer for her grace and is often followed by the dhyana verse 'Namaste-stu Mahamaye'.
What do the seed syllables 'Shrim' and 'Hrim' mean?
'Shrim' is the beej (seed) mantra of Lakshmi, embodying wealth, beauty, auspiciousness and abundance. 'Hrim' is the beej of the Great Goddess (Maya/Shakti), embodying her creative power and energy. Together they charge the prayer with both prosperity and divine power.
How many times should the Lakshmi mantra be chanted?
It is traditionally chanted 108 times using a mala, ideally one made of kamalgatta (lotus seeds) or red coral. Some devotees do a longer anushthana of 1,008 or more during Diwali. The key is steady faith, a clean seat, and the mind fixed on the Goddess.
When besides Diwali is this mantra recited?
Apart from Diwali and Dhanteras, it is recited on Fridays (the day of Lakshmi), during Navaratri, on Varalakshmi Vratam, Akshaya Tritiya, and at the start of new ventures, account books or businesses to invoke prosperity.
