Origin & History

Source: Tantric Shakta tradition (Atharvana Bhadrakali / Pratyangira upasana of the Devi and Narasimha streams)

Author: Unknown (traditional Tantric / Agama tradition)

Period: Ancient

Pratyangira arose from the fierce energies of Shiva and Vishnu to pacify and counter destructive forces. In one well-known tradition she is born of the matted lock (Sharabha-Pratyangira) when the Lord's wrath needed to be turned into protective grace; in the Narasimha stream she is Narasimhi, the lioness-faced Shakti who completes the protective power of the Man-Lion. Worshipped especially in South Indian Shakta temples, her mantras are employed to reverse black magic and destroy hostile forces, while granting her devotees fearless protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Goddess Pratyangira?
Pratyangira (also called Narasimhi or Atharvana Bhadrakali) is a fierce protective form of the Divine Mother with a lion's face and a dark, awe-inspiring appearance. She is regarded as the Shakti of Lord Narasimha and is invoked to 'turn back' (prati) and destroy all evil, curses and black magic aimed at Her devotees.
What does the Pratyangira mantra do?
It invokes the Goddess for the most powerful protection — to shield the devotee, repel and reverse black magic, curses and psychic attacks, destroy the strength of enemies and ill-wishers, and remove grave negative influences. It is essentially a fierce protective and counter-evil mantra.
Can anyone chant the Pratyangira mantra?
Because Pratyangira is a fierce (ugra) deity, the full mantra is traditionally taken through initiation from a qualified guru and practised with discipline, purity and devotion. A devotee may chant the simple form 'Om Hreem Pratyangirayai Namah' with reverence; for intensive sadhana, proper guidance is strongly advised.
When is the best time to chant it?
It is considered most potent in the late evening or night, and on Tuesdays, Fridays, Amavasya (new moon) and during eclipses. It should always be chanted in a clean space with a sincere, fearless and devotional attitude.
