Complete Translation

Om, salutations to the five-faced son of Anjana. Of this Panchamukha Hanuman mantra, Brahma is the seer, Gayatri the metre, the five-faced cosmic Hanuman the deity; Hreem is the seed, Shreem the power, Kroum the pin — thus the directions are bound. Now I declare the meditation (dhyana) of Hanuman, dear and made by the Lord of lords. He is five-faced and mighty, with fifteen eyes and ten arms, the giver of every desire and aim. His East face is that of the monkey (Vanara), blazing like a thousand suns, with fearsome tusks and arched brows. His South face is Narasimha, of terrible radiance, dispelling all fear. His West face is Garuda, stilling every serpent and poison and evil spirit. His North face is the Boar (Varaha), dark and shining like the sky, cutting away the spirits of the netherworld, vetalas, fevers and disease. His upward face is the dread Horse-face (Hayagriva), ender of demons, by which He slew the great demon Taraka. He holds in His ten hands the sword, trident, khatvanga, noose, goad, mountain, fist, the Kaumodaki mace, a tree, the water-pot, the bhindipala and the jnana-mudra. Seated upon a throne, adorned with every ornament, garlands and divine fragrance — the all-wondrous Lord whose faces turn to every side — golden-crowned, tawny-eyed, the first and best of the monkey-kings, I ever hold Him in my mind. Destroy my enemies, protect me, O glorious one, and lift me out of every adversity. Om Harimarkata Markata — by this mantra written on the left, the enemy's clan perishes. Om, to Harimarkata, svaha.

Origin & History

Source: Sudarshana Samhita / traditional Hanuman kavacha literature

Author: Traditional

Period: Classical

The five-faced (Panchamukha) form of Hanuman is famous from the Ramayana tradition: to slay the sorcerer Mahiravana, who could only be killed by extinguishing five lamps in five directions at once, Hanuman assumed five faces — His own and those of Narasimha, Garuda, Varaha and Hayagriva — and blew them all out together, rescuing Rama and Lakshmana. This kavach invokes that all-protecting five-faced form.

It is the protective armour-prayer (kavach) of the five-faced (Panchamukha) form of Hanuman. Its dhyana describes His five faces — Hanuman (east), Narasimha (south), Garuda (west), Varaha (north) and Hayagriva (upward) — and His ten arms bearing weapons, invoking His protection from every side.
What are the five faces of Panchmukhi Hanuman and what do they signify?
East — Hanuman, blazing like a thousand suns, granting every wish; South — Narasimha, destroying fear and evil; West — Garuda, removing poison, serpents and dark spirits; North — Varaha (Boar), cutting away disease, fever and netherworld forces; Upward — Hayagriva (Horse), slayer of demons and giver of knowledge.
What are the benefits of reciting the Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach?
It is held to give powerful all-round protection — from enemies, fear, disease, poison, evil spirits and black magic — and to rescue the devotee from adversity. It is one of the strongest protective prayers in the Hanuman tradition.
When should the Panchmukhi Hanuman Kavach be recited?
It is most often recited on Tuesdays and Saturdays — the days of Hanuman — after bathing, before an image of Panchamukha Hanuman, with a lamp of sesame oil. It may be chanted daily for ongoing protection.
