Kirtana of Bhadrachala Ramadasa, popularly in raga Ananda Bhairavi, Adi tala (Telugu, 17th century CE) · Bhadrachala Ramadasa (Kancherla Gopanna) · c. 1620-1688 CE

Gopanna the tahsildar built Rama a temple at Bhadrachalam with six lakh varahas of tax money, and the Sultan cast him into the Golconda fortress. Through twelve years of chains, the saint kept singing to the deity he had enthroned. In this kirtana his ache turns playful and piercing at once: the Lord's speech, once so freely given to squirrels and stones, has now become 'gold' — too precious, it seems, for his own Ramadasa.

The story goes that after years of this pleading, two radiant youths — Ramoji and Lakshmoji — appeared before Sultan Tanisha by night, paid the six lakh varahas in coins bearing Rama's seal, obtained the release warrant, and vanished. Waking, the Sultan realised who his creditors had been and freed the saint with honour. The Lord whose word had 'turned to gold' answered, in the end, with gold of his own.

అర్థం:Has your word become gold, O Kodandapani, bearer of the bow? Has your very speech grown too precious to spend on me?

పలుకే బఙ్గారమాయె పిలచినా పలుకవేమి కలలో నీ నామస్మరణ మరువ చక్కని తణ్డ్రీ ॥ పలుకే బఙ్గారమాయెనా ॥

palukē baṅgāramāye pilacinā palukavēmi kalalō nī nāmasmaraṇa maruva cakkani taṇḍrī ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥

అర్థం:Your word has indeed become gold — why do you not answer when I call? Even in my dreams I never forget the remembrance of your name, my good Father.

ఎన్త వేడినగాని సున్తైన దయరాదు పన్తము సేయ నేనెన్తటివాడను తణ్డ్రీ ॥ పలుకే బఙ్గారమాయెనా ॥

enta vēḍinagāni suntaina dayarādu pantamu sēya nēnentaṭivāḍanu taṇḍrī ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥

అర్థం:However much I plead, not the least drop of mercy comes. But then, who am I to be stubborn and make demands of you, Father?

అర్థం:Do you not bear the proud title 'Protector of those who take refuge'? Have mercy, O Lord of Bhadrachala, sustainer of your Ramadasa!

ఇరవుగ ఇసుకలోన పొరలిన ఉడుత భక్తికి కరుణిఞ్చి బ్రోచితివని నెర నమ్మితిని తణ్డ్రీ ॥ పలుకే బఙ్గారమాయెనా ॥

iravuga isukalōna poralina uḍuta bhaktiki karuṇiñci brōcitivani nera nammitini taṇḍrī ॥ palukē baṅgāramāyenā ॥

అర్థం:When the little squirrel rolled devotedly in the sand (to help build your bridge), you were moved and protected it — trusting in that, I have believed in you utterly, Father.

రాతి నాతిగ చేసి భూతలమున ప్రఖ్యాతి చెన్దితివని ప్రీతితో నమ్మితి తణ్డ్రీ ॥ పలుకే బఙ్గారమాయెనా ॥

అర్థం:You turned a stone into a woman (Ahalya) and won renown across the whole earth — with love I have placed my trust in that, Father.

'Has your word become gold?' — that is, as rare and costly as gold. Ramadasa lovingly reproaches Rama (Kodandapani, the bow-bearer) for not answering when his devotee calls.

Tradition places it in the Golconda prison, where Kancherla Gopanna (Ramadasa) spent about twelve years for using state revenue to build the Bhadrachalam Rama temple.

They are Rama's famous mercies: he caressed the little squirrel that rolled in the sand to help build the bridge to Lanka, and restored Ahalya, turned to stone, at the touch of his foot. Ramadasa pleads — you who did that, can you not speak one word to me?

Most popularly in Ananda Bhairavi (Adi tala), whose tender, consoling gait perfectly fits the song's mixture of complaint and love.
