In the closing dialogue appended to the Vishnu Sahasranama, Parvati asks Shiva for a simple means by which the learned daily recite the thousand names of Vishnu. Shiva replies with this verse — that he himself revels in the enchanting name of Rama, and that the single name 'Rama' is equal to the entire Sahasranama. The line became one of the most cherished testimonies to the power of the Rama Nama.

Tradition holds that Shiva, the eternal yogi, sustains himself by ceaselessly chanting the Rama Nama, and that he whispers the Taraka mantra into the ear of those who die at Kashi, granting them liberation. അർഥം:The Lord (Shiva) said: 'Saying "Shri Rama, Rama, Rama", I revel in the enchanting name of Rama. O lovely-faced one (Parvati), the one name "Rama" is equal to the thousand names of Vishnu.'

Recite the verse with devotion, then continue repeating the name 'Shri Rama, Rama, Rama' as a japa. It needs no special ritual and may be chanted while walking, working or at the altar. Many devotees use a tulsi mala to repeat the Rama Nama 108 times, recalling Shiva's words that one such name equals the whole Sahasranama.
