✦ Meaning
The Vishwakarma Chalisa is a forty-verse Hindi hymn to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect and master craftsman of the gods. It praises him as the fashioner of all creation, maker of the gods' weapons and celestial vehicles, and bestower of skill, prosperity and accomplishment. It is recited especially on Vishwakarma Jayanti / Vishwakarma Puja by artisans, engineers and workers seeking his blessings.
Origin & Story
Traditional Hindi devotional literature (Vishwakarma worship tradition) · Traditional (anonymous) · Modern devotional period
Vishwakarma is celebrated in the Vedas and Puranas as the divine craftsman 'Tvashtar' and the architect of the cosmos. This forty-verse Hindi chalisa, composed in the popular Chalisa form, gathers his epithets and feats — the fashioning of the gods' weapons, the building of their cities, the making of vehicles and instruments — into a hymn recited by the artisan and labouring communities who hold him as their patron deity, especially on Vishwakarma Puja.
✦ As told in scripture
Tradition credits Vishwakarma with building the golden city of Lanka, the city of Dwarka for Krishna, the Pandavas' palace of Maya, and the flying chariots of the gods. Devotees believe that worshipping their tools and machines with this chalisa on Vishwakarma Puja keeps them free of accidents and breakdowns and brings prosperity to their livelihood through the year.

Meaning:The chalisa hails Vishwakarma as the eighth Vasu, son of Prabhasa, who revealed craftsmanship to the world and fashioned all creation. It describes his radiant form with many faces and arms bearing the discus, conch, measuring tools, bow, trident and lotus, and recounts how he forged the weapons of the gods from the sun's brilliance — the discus for Vishnu, the trident for Shiva, the thunderbolt for Indra, the noose for Varuna. He made the pot of nectar, works in iron, wood, copper, stone and gold, and crafted the vehicles that travel by water, land and sky. He is declared inseparable from Shiva in the science of creation, the bestower of prosperity and accomplishment, protector of all craftsmen. Whoever recites this chalisa one hundred and eight times has their calamities destroyed and gains great happiness, with Lord Shiva as witness.
