Somvati Amavasya is the Amavasya (no-moon day) that falls on a Monday. Monday belongs to Lord Shiva and Amavasya to the ancestors — their coincidence comes only a few times a year, which makes the day especially sacred. Holy bathing, charity (daan), pitru tarpan, and the worship of Lord Shiva and the Peepal tree are all of special merit on this day.
Married women keep a fast for their husband's long life and circle the Peepal tree 108 times, winding a thread around it — just as in the Vat Savitri vrat. The Mahabharata records Bhishma himself extolling the merit of this Amavasya.
