Annamayya left home as a boy of sixteen, drawn irresistibly to Tirumala. Climbing the rocky footpath, he beheld the sacred hill rising before him and burst into song — 'Adivo alladivo!' ('There it is — over there!'). The sankirtana preserves that first ecstatic darshan: the hill of Sesha's ten thousand hoods, the home of sages, the golden-peaked treasure, the seat of liberation. His songs, engraved on copper plates, were rediscovered centuries later in a vault of the Tirumala temple.

Tradition says the boy Annamayya, climbing barefoot, fainted with hunger on the hill path; Goddess Alamelumanga herself appeared and fed him, and when he reached the crest and saw the hill of the Lord, this song poured out of him. Pilgrims say singing it on the footpath makes the steep climb feel light, as if the Lord himself draws them up.

അദിവോ അല്ലദിവോ ശ്രീ ഹരി വാസമു പദിവേല ശേഷുല പഡഗല മയമു ॥
adivō alladivō śrī hari vāsamu padivēla śēṣula paḍagala mayamu ॥
അർഥം:वह देखो — वह रहा! — श्री हरि का निवास, आदिशेष के दस हज़ार फणों से दमकता हुआ। (तिरुमला के प्रथम दर्शन पर तीर्थयात्री आनंद से पुकार उठता है।)
അദെ വേങ്കടാചല മഖിലോന്നതമു അദിവോ ബ്രഹ്മാദുല കപുരൂപമു । അദിവോ നിത്യനിവാസ മഖില മുനുലകു അദെ ചൂഡു ഡദെ മൊക്കു ഡാനന്ദമയമു ॥ അദിവോ അല്ലദിവോ ശ്രീ ഹരി വാസമു പദിവേല ശേഷുല പഡഗല മയമു ॥

അർഥം:वही है वेंकटाचल — सबसे उन्नत, ऐसा अद्भुत पर्वत कि ब्रह्मा आदि देवताओं के लिए भी अनुपम है। वह समस्त मुनियों का नित्य निवास है; उसे देखो, उसे प्रणाम करो — वह आनंदमय है। वह रहा श्री हरि का निवास, शेष के दस हज़ार फणों से दीप्त।
ചെങ്ഗട നല്ലദിവോ ശേഷാചലമൂ നിങ്ഗി നുന്ന ദേവതല നിജവാസമു । മുങ്ഗിട നല്ലദിവോ മൂലനുന്ന ധനമു ബങ്ഗാരു ശിഖരാല ബഹു ബ്രഹ്മമയമു ॥ അദിവോ അല്ലദിവോ ശ്രീ ഹരി വാസമു പദിവേല ശേഷുല പഡഗല മയമു ॥
ceṅgaṭa nalladivō śēṣācalamū niṅgi nunna dēvatala nijavāsamu । muṅgiṭa nalladivō mūlanunna dhanamu baṅgāru śikharāla bahu brahmamayamu ॥ adivō alladivō śrī hari vāsamu padivēla śēṣula paḍagala mayamu ॥
അർഥം:पास ही — वह देखो! — शेषाचल खड़ा है, स्वर्ग के देवताओं का सच्चा घर। आँगन के ठीक सामने आदि-मूल का धन छिपा है: सुनहरे शिखरोंवाला यह पर्वत पूर्ण रूप से ब्रह्ममय है। वह रहा श्री हरि का निवास।
കൈവല്യ പദമു വേങ്കട നഗ മദിവോ ശ്രീ വേങ്കടപതികി സിരുലൈനദി । ഭാവിമ്പ സകല സമ്പദ രൂപമദിവോ പാവനമുല കെല്ല പാവന മയമൂ ॥ അദിവോ അല്ലദിവോ ശ്രീ ഹരി വാസമു പദിവേല ശേഷുല പഡഗല മയമു ॥
kaivalya padamu vēṅkaṭa naga madivō śrī vēṅkaṭapatiki sirulainadi । bhāvimpa sakala sampada rūpamadivō pāvanamula kella pāvana mayamū ॥ adivō alladivō śrī hari vāsamu padivēla śēṣula paḍagala mayamu ॥
അർഥം:वही वेंकट पर्वत साक्षात् कैवल्य — मोक्ष — का पद है; वही श्री वेंकटपति का ऐश्वर्य है। भावना करके देखो — वह समस्त संपदाओं का रूप है, पवित्रों को भी पावन करनेवाला। वह रहा श्री हरि का निवास, शेष के दस हज़ार फणों से दमकता हुआ।
