ati rūpeṇa vai sītā ati-garveṇa rāvaṇaḥ। ati-dānād balir baddho ati sarvatra varjayet॥

Meaning:अत्यधिक रूप (सौन्दर्य) के कारण सीता को कष्ट हुआ, अत्यधिक गर्व से रावण नष्ट हुआ, और अत्यधिक दान से राजा बलि बँध गए; इसलिए मनुष्य को हर बात में अति (अतिशयता) से बचना चाहिए। तीन प्रसिद्ध उदाहरणों के द्वारा यह सुभाषित मध्यम मार्ग (संयम) का कालजयी ज्ञान सिखाता है — कि अच्छे गुण भी, अति पर पहुँचकर, पतन का कारण बन सकते हैं।
