When Brahma grew proud, Lord Shiva manifested as Kaal Bhairav — Time and death personified — and humbled him, then took up residence in Kashi as its eternal Kotwal, the fierce guardian who rides a dog and bears the trident. Fearsome in form yet tender to the devout (worshipped also as the boy Batuk Bhairav), he is the swift destroyer of fear, sin and evil. This Chalisa, composed by the poet Sundardas, praises him in forty verses.

It is said that no pilgrimage to Kashi is complete without the darshan of Kaal Bhairav, its Kotwal, who keeps the ledger of every soul — and that when he brings down his staff, even the greatest sins are destroyed. Devotees facing fear, enemies, legal trouble or black magic light his four-faced lamp on Kalashtami, recite this Chalisa, and feed a dog in his name.

Shri ganapati guru gauri pada, prema sahita dhari matha Chalisa vandana karom, shri shiva bhairavanatha
അർഥം:Placing on my head, with love, the feet of Shri Ganapati, the Guru and Gauri, I offer this Chalisa in salutation to Shri Shiva-Bhairavnath.
ശ്രീ ഭൈരവ സംകട ഹരണ, മംഗല കരണ കൃപാല । ശ്യാമ വരണ വികരാല വപു, ലോചന ലാല വിശാല ॥
Shri bhairava samkata harana, mamgala karana kripala Shyama varana vikarala vapu, lochana lala vishala
അർഥം:Shri Bhairav, remover of distress, doer of good, the compassionate; of dark complexion and fearsome body, with large red eyes.
ജയ ജയ ശ്രീ കാലീ കേ ലാലാ । ജയതി ജയതി കാശീ കുതവാലാ ॥
Jaya jaya shri kali ke lala Jayati jayati kashi kutavala
അർഥം:Victory, victory to the darling of Kali; victory, victory to the Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi.
ജയതി ബടുക ഭൈരവ ഭയഹാരീ । ജയതി കാല ഭൈരവ ബലകാരീ ॥

അർഥം:Victory to Batuk Bhairav, remover of fear; victory to Kaal Bhairav, the mighty.
ജയതി നാഥ ഭൈരവ വിഖ്യാതാ । ജയതി സര്വ ഭൈരവ സുഖദാതാ ॥
Jayati natha bhairava vikhyata Jayati sarva bhairava sukhadata
അർഥം:Victory to the renowned Bhairavnath; victory to all the Bhairavas, the givers of joy.
ഭൈരവ രൂപ കിയോ ശിവ ധാരണ । ഭവ കേ ഭാര ഉതാരണ കാരണ ॥
Bhairava rupa kiyo shiva dharana Bhava ke bhara utarana karana
അർഥം:Shiva took on the form of Bhairav for the sake of lifting the burden of worldly existence.
ഭൈരവ രവ സുനി ഹവൈ ഭയ ദൂരീ । സബ വിധി ഹോയ കാമനാ പൂരീ ॥
Bhairava rava suni havai bhaya duri Saba vidhi hoya kamana puri
അർഥം:Hearing Bhairav's roar, fear flees; in every way one's wishes are fulfilled.
ശേഷ മഹേശ ആദി ഗുണ ഗായോ । കാശീ കോതവാല കഹലായോ ॥
Shesha mahesha adi guna gayo Kashi kotavala kahalayo
അർഥം:Shesha, Mahesha and the rest have sung his virtues; he is called the Kotwal of Kashi.
ജടാജൂട ശിര ചന്ദ്ര വിരാജത । ബാലാ മുകുട ബിജായഠ സാജത ॥
Jatajuta shira chandra virajata Bala mukuta bijayatha sajata
അർഥം:Matted locks upon his head with the moon shining there; a small crown and ornaments adorn him.
കടി കരധനീ ഘുംഘരൂ ബാജത । ദര്ശന കരത സകല ഭയ ഭാജത ॥
Kati karadhani ghumgharu bajata Darshana karata sakala bhaya bhajata
അർഥം:A girdle of bells rings at his waist; at his darshan all fear flees.
ജീവന ദാന ദാസ കോ ദീന്ഹ്യോ । കീന്ഹ്യോ കൃപാ നാഥ തബ ചീന്ഹ്യോ ॥
Jivana dana dasa ko dinhyo Kinhyo kripa natha taba chinhyo
അർഥം:He granted the gift of life to his servant; he showed his grace and then recognized (the devotee) as his own.
ബസി രസനാ ബനി സാരദ കാലീ । ദീന്ഹ്യോ വര രാഖ്യോ മമ ലാലീ ॥
Basi rasana bani sarada kali Dinhyo vara rakhyo mama lali
അർഥം:He dwells upon the tongue as Sharada (Saraswati) and Kali; he gave a boon and kept my honour.
ധന്യ ധന്യ ഭൈരവ ഭയഭംജന । ജയ മനരംജന ഖലദല ഭംജന ॥
Dhanya dhanya bhairava bhayabhamjana Jaya manaramjana khaladala bhamjana
അർഥം:Blessed, blessed is Bhairav, destroyer of fear; victory, delighter of hearts, crusher of the wicked horde.
കര ത്രിശൂല ഡമരൂ ശുചി കോഡ़ാ । കൃപാ കടാക്ഷ സുയശ നഹിം ഥോഡ़ാ ॥
Kara trishula damaru shuchi koda़a Kripa kataksha suyasha nahim thoda़a
അർഥം:In his hands the trident, the damaru and the sacred whip; not small is the glory of his gracious sidelong glance.
ജോ ഭൈരവ നിര്ഭയ ഗുണ ഗാവത । അഷ്ട സിദ്ധി നവ നിധി ഫല പാവത ॥
Jo bhairava nirbhaya guna gavata Ashta siddhi nava nidhi phala pavata
അർഥം:Whoever fearlessly sings Bhairav's virtues gains the eight siddhis and the nine treasures.
രൂപ വിശാല കഠിന ദുഖ മോചന । ക്രോധ കരാല ലാല ദുഹും ലോചന ॥
Rupa vishala kathina dukha mochana Krodha karala lala duhum lochana
അർഥം:Of vast form, reliever of hard sorrow; of fierce wrath, both his eyes red.
അഗണിത ഭൂത പ്രേത സംഗ ഡോലത । ബമ ബമ ബമ ശിവ ബമ ബമ ബോലത ॥
Aganita bhuta preta samga dolata Bama bama bama shiva bama bama bolata
അർഥം:Countless ghosts and spirits roam at his side; 'Bam Bam Bam, Shiva, Bam Bam' he calls.
രുദ്രകായ കാലീ കേ ലാലാ । മഹാകാലഹൂ കേ ഹോ കാലാ ॥
Rudrakaya kali ke lala Mahakalahu ke ho kala
അർഥം:Of fierce (Rudra) body, the darling of Kali; he is the death even of Mahakala.
ബടുക നാഥ ഹോ കാല ഗംഭീരാ । ശ്വേത രക്ത അരു ശ്യാമ ശരീരാ ॥
Batuka natha ho kala gambhira Shveta rakta aru shyama sharira
അർഥം:Batuk Nath, grave as Time itself; of white, red and dark body.
കരത തീനഹും രൂപ പ്രകാശാ । ഭരത സുഭക്തന കഹം ശുഭ ആശാ ॥
Karata tinahum rupa prakasha Bharata subhaktana kaham shubha asha
അർഥം:Manifesting his three forms, he fills his good devotees with auspicious hope.
രത്ന ജഡ़ിത കംചന സിംഹാസന । വ്യാഘ്ര ചര്മ ശുചി നര്മ സുആസന ॥
Ratna jada़ita kamchana simhasana Vyaghra charma shuchi narma suasana
അർഥം:On a jewel-studded golden throne, a tiger-skin for his soft and sacred seat.
തുമ്ഹഹി ജാഇ കാശിഹിം ജന ധ്യാവഹിം । വിശ്വനാഥ കഹം ദര്ശന പാവഹിം ॥
Tumhahi jai kashihim jana dhyavahim Vishvanatha kaham darshana pavahim
അർഥം:Whoever goes to Kashi and meditates upon you gains the darshan of Vishwanath.
ജയ പ്രഭു സംഹാരക സുനന്ദ ജയ । ജയ ഉന്നത ഹര ഉമാനന്ദ ജയ ॥
Jaya prabhu samharaka sunanda jaya Jaya unnata hara umananda jaya
അർഥം:Victory, O Lord, destroyer and giver of bliss; victory, exalted one, joy of Hara and Uma.
ഭീമ ത്രിലോചന സ്വാന സാഥ ജയ । വൈജനാഥ ശ്രീ ജഗതനാഥ ജയ ॥
Bhima trilochana svana satha jaya Vaijanatha shri jagatanatha jaya
അർഥം:Bhima, three-eyed, with the dog at his side — victory; Vaijanath, Shri Jagatnath — victory.
മഹാ ഭീമ ഭീഷണ ശരീര ജയ । രുദ്ര ത്ര്യമ്ബക ധീര വീര ജയ ॥
Maha bhima bhishana sharira jaya Rudra tryambaka dhira vira jaya
അർഥം:Of mighty, terrible, dreadful body — victory; Rudra, three-eyed, steadfast and brave — victory.
വനനാഥ ജയ പ്രേതനാഥ ജയ । ശ്വാനാരൂഢ़ ശശിചന്ദ്രനാഥ ജയ ॥
Vananatha jaya pretanatha jaya Shvanarudha़ shashichandranatha jaya
അർഥം:Lord of the forest — victory; lord of the ghosts — victory; dog-mounted, moon-crested lord — victory.
നിമിഷ ദിഗമ്ബര ചക്രനാഥ ജയ । ഗഹത അനാഥന നാഥ ഹാഥ ജയ ॥
Nimisha digambara chakranatha jaya Gahata anathana natha hatha jaya
അർഥം:In an instant, the sky-clad lord of the discus — victory; who takes the helpless by the hand, O lord of the orphaned — victory.
ത്രിശൂലേശ ഭൂതേശ ചന്ദ്ര ജയ । ക്രോധ വത്സ അമരേശ നന്ദ ജയ ॥
Trishulesha bhutesha chandra jaya Krodha vatsa amaresha nanda jaya
അർഥം:Lord of the trident, lord of beings, moon-crested — victory; master of wrath, beloved one, lord of the immortals — victory.
ശ്രീ വാമന നകുലേശ ചണ്ഡ ജയ । കൃത്യാഊ കീരതി പ്രചണ്ഡ ജയ ॥
Shri vamana nakulesha chanda jaya Krityau kirati prachanda jaya
അർഥം:Shri Vamana, lord of the mongoose, the fierce — victory; of mighty deeds and blazing fame — victory.
രുദ്ര ബടുക ക്രോധേശ കാലധര । ചക്ര തുണ്ഡ ദശ പാണി വ്യാല ധര ॥
Rudra batuka krodhesha kaladhara Chakra tunda dasha pani vyala dhara
അർഥം:Rudra Batuk, lord of wrath, bearer of Time; bearing the discus and club in his ten arms, and the serpent.
കരി മദ പാന ശമ്ഭു ഗുണഗാവത । ചൌംസഠ യോഗിന സംഗ നചാവത ॥
Kari mada pana shambhu gunagavata Chaumsatha yogina samga nachavata
അർഥം:Drinking the intoxicating draught, he sings Shambhu's praise; he makes the sixty-four yoginis dance with him.
കരത കൃപാ ജന പര ബഹു ഢംഗാ । കാശീ കോതവാല അഡ़ബംഗാ ॥
Karata kripa jana para bahu dhamga Kashi kotavala ada़bamga
അർഥം:He shows grace to his devotees in countless ways — the unyielding Kotwal of Kashi.
ദേയം കാല ഭൈരവ ജബ സോടാ । നസൈ പാപ മോടാ സേം മോടാ ॥
Deyam kala bhairava jaba sota Nasai papa mota sem mota
അർഥം:When Kaal Bhairav brings down his staff, the greatest of the great sins are destroyed.
ജനകര നിര്മല ഹോയ ശരീരാ । മിടൈ സകല സംകട ഭവ പീരാ ॥
Janakara nirmala hoya sharira Mitai sakala samkata bhava pira
അർഥം:The body of the devotee becomes pure, and every distress and the pain of existence is wiped away.
ശ്രീ ഭൈരവ ഭൂതോം കേ രാജാ । ബാധാ ഹരത കരത ശുഭ കാജാ ॥
Shri bhairava bhutom ke raja Badha harata karata shubha kaja
അർഥം:Shri Bhairav, king of the spirits, removes obstacles and accomplishes auspicious works.
ഐലാദീ കേ ദുഖ നിവാരയോ । സദാ കൃപാകരി കാജ സമ്ഹാരയോ ॥
Ailadi ke dukha nivarayo Sada kripakari kaja samharayo
അർഥം:He removed the sorrows of Ailadi; ever showing grace, he set her affairs in order.
സുന്ദര ദാസ സഹിത അനുരാഗാ । ശ്രീ ദുര്വാസാ നികട പ്രയാഗാ ॥
Sundara dasa sahita anuraga Shri durvasa nikata prayaga
അർഥം:Sundardas, with deep devotion, near the hermitage of Shri Durvasa at Prayag —
ശ്രീ ഭൈരവ ജീ കീ ജയ ലേഖ്യോ । സകല കാമനാ പൂരണ ദേഖ്യോ ॥
Shri bhairava ji ki jaya lekhyo Sakala kamana purana dekhyo
അർഥം:— has written this in praise of Shri Bhairav Ji; (whoever reads it) finds all his wishes fulfilled.
ജയ ജയ ജയ ഭൈരവ ബടുക സ്വാമീ, സംകട ടാര । കൃപാ ദാസ പര കീജിഏ, ശംകര കേ അവതാര ॥

श्री भैरव चालीसा പാരായണ ഫലങ്ങൾ
Recited to invoke Kaal Bhairav, the fierce protective form of Shiva and Kotwal (guardian) of Kashi, for protection from fear, enemies, accidents and negative forces.
Believed to remove obstacles, black magic, evil spirits, untimely death and the troubles of an afflicted Rahu, Ketu and Saturn.
Grants courage, fearlessness, swift justice and the fulfilment of sincere wishes; said to wipe away even the greatest sins when chanted with devotion.
Most powerful on Kalashtami (the eighth lunar day), Bhairav Ashtami, and on Sundays and Tuesdays — recited with the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam and aarti.
Traditionally chanted before a four-faced lamp; feeding a dog (Bhairav's mount) is considered especially pleasing to him.
श्री भैरव चालीसा പാരായണ വിധി
In the evening, light a lamp (ideally a chaumukha, four-faced lamp) of mustard or sesame oil before an image of Kaal Bhairav. Offer vermilion, and traditionally a portion of food to a dog. Recite the Bhairav Chalisa with devotion, ideally with the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam and aarti. Kalashtami and Bhairav Ashtami are the most auspicious days; daily recitation is recommended in times of fear or danger.
