While Krishna was enjoying His childhood pastimes as a cowherd in Vrindavana, Lord Brahma, curious to test the divinity of the boy, used his mystic power to steal away all of Krishna's calves and cowherd friends and concealed them. Unperturbed, Krishna personally expanded Himself into identical forms of every missing calf and boy, deceiving even their own mothers for an entire year. When Brahma returned and saw both his hidden charges and Krishna's self-manifested duplicates — and then a vision of countless four-armed Vishnu forms being worshipped — he was utterly humbled. Descending from his swan-carrier, the creator bowed at the feet of the cowherd boy and poured out this prayer, of which these opening verses are the most cherished.

As told in scripture

The Bhagavata relates that when Brahma sought his stolen calves and boys, he found them still asleep where he had hidden them by his illusory power — and simultaneously saw them present with Krishna in Vrindavana, for the Lord had become each one of them exactly. Then before Brahma's eyes every calf and boy appeared as a four-armed Narayana, worshipped by Brahma, Shiva and all beings, leaving the creator stunned and convinced of Krishna's absolute supremacy.

śrī-brahmovāca naumīḍya te 'bhra-vapuṣe taḍid-ambarāya guñjāvataṃsa-paripiccha-lasan-mukhāya | vanya-sraje kavala-vetra-viṣāṇa-veṇu- lakṣma-śriye mṛdu-pade paśupāṅgajāya || 1 ||

Meaning:श्रीब्रह्मा ने कहा — हे वन्दनीय प्रभो! मैं आपकी स्तुति करता हूँ। आपका शरीर मेघ के समान श्याम है और वस्त्र बिजली के समान चमकीला; गुञ्जा के कुण्डलों और मयूरपिच्छ से आपका मुख सुशोभित है। वन-पुष्पों की माला धारण किए, हाथ में कौर, छड़ी, सींग और वेणु से युक्त, कोमल चरणों वाले — आप गोपराज नन्द के पुत्र शोभायमान हैं।

asyāpi deva vapuṣo mad-anugrahasya svecchā-mayasya na tu bhūta-mayasya ko 'pi | neśe mahi tv avasituṃ manasāntareṇa sākṣāt tavaiva kim utātma-sukhānubhūteḥ || 2 ||

Meaning:हे देव! भक्तों पर अनुग्रह हेतु आपकी इच्छा से प्रकट यह दिव्य शरीर, जो भौतिक तत्त्वों से नहीं बना — इसकी महिमा को भी कोई दीर्घ मानसिक प्रयास से नहीं समझ सकता; फिर आत्मसुख के अनुभवस्वरूप साक्षात् आपको तो कौन समझ सकता है!

ජ්ඤානේ ප්රයාසමුදපාස්ය නමන්ත ඒව ජීවන්ති සන්මුඛරිතාං භවදීයවාර්තාම් . ස්ථානේ ස්ථිතාඃ ශ්රුතිගතාං තනුවාඞ්මනෝභි- ර්යේ ප්රායශෝ(අ)ජිත ජිතෝ(අ)ප්යසි තෛස්ත්රිලෝක්යාම් .. 3 ..

jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti san-mukharitāṃ bhavadīya-vārtām | sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṃ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir ye prāyaśo 'jita jito 'py asi tais tri-lokyām || 3 ||

Meaning:जो लोग ज्ञान के (शुष्क) प्रयास को त्यागकर केवल नमस्कार करते हुए, सन्तों के मुख से गाई गई आपकी कथाओं में जीवन बिताते हैं — अपनी-अपनी स्थिति में रहते हुए, शरीर, वाणी और मन से श्रवण-प्राप्त (आपके संदेश) के प्रति समर्पित — हे अजित! ऐसे भक्त तीनों लोकों में आप जितों को भी जीत लेते हैं।

ශ්රේයඃසෘතිං භක්තිමුදස්ය තේ විභෝ ක්ලිශ්යන්ති යේ කේවලබෝධලබ්ධයේ . තේෂාමසෞ ක්ලේශල ඒව ශිෂ්යතේ නාන්යද්යථා ස්ථූලතුෂාවඝාතිනාම් .. 4 ..

śreyaḥ-sṛtiṃ bhaktim udasya te vibho kliśyanti ye kevala-bodha-labdhaye | teṣām asau kleśala eva śiṣyate nānyad yathā sthūla-tuṣāvaghātinām || 4 ||

Meaning:हे विभो! जो लोग श्रेय के मार्ग भक्ति को छोड़कर केवल निर्विशेष ज्ञान की प्राप्ति के लिए क्लेश उठाते हैं, उन्हें केवल क्लेश ही शेष रहता है — जैसे खाली भूसी कूटने वालों को परिश्रम के सिवा कुछ नहीं मिलता।

පුරේහ භූමන්බහවෝ(අ)පි යෝගින- ස්ත්වදර්පිතේහා නිජකර්මලබ්ධයා . විබුධ්ය භක්ත්යෛව කථෝපනීතයා ප්රපේදිරේ(අ)ඤ්ජෝ(අ)ච්යුත තේ ගතිං පරාම් .. 5 ..

pureha bhūman bahavo 'pi yoginas tvad-arpitehā nija-karma-labdhayā | vibudhya bhaktyaiva kathopanītayā prapedire 'ñjo 'cyuta te gatiṃ parām || 5 ||

Meaning:हे भूमन्! इस लोक में पूर्व में अनेक योगी, अपने कर्मों से प्राप्त साधनों द्वारा आप में चेष्टा अर्पित करके और कथा-श्रवण से उत्पन्न भक्ति द्वारा ही प्रबुद्ध होकर, हे अच्युत! सहज ही आपकी परम गति को प्राप्त हुए।

තථාපි භූමන්මහිමාගුණස්ය තේ විබෝද්ධුමර්හත්යමලාන්තරාත්මභිඃ . අවික්රියාත්ස්වානුභවාදරූපතෝ හ්යනන්යබෝධ්යාත්මතයා චාන්යථා .. 6 ..

tathāpi bhūman mahimāguṇasya te viboddhum arhaty amalāntar-ātmabhiḥ | avikriyāt svānubhavād arūpato hy ananya-bodhyātmatayā na cānyathā || 6 ||

Meaning:फिर भी, हे भूमन्! दिव्य गुणों वाले आपकी महिमा को निर्मल अन्तःकरण वाले ही जान सकते हैं — अपने निर्विकार, अरूप, आत्मानुभव द्वारा, जिसमें केवल आप ही ज्ञेय हैं — और किसी अन्य प्रकार से नहीं।

ගුණාත්මනස්තේ(අ)පි ගුණාන්විමාතුං හිතාවතීර්ණස්ය ඊශිරේ(අ)ස්ය . කාලේන යෛර්වා විමිතාඃ සුකල්පෛර් භූපාංශවඃ ඛේ මිහිකා ද්යුභාසඃ .. 7 ..

guṇātmanas te 'pi guṇān vimātuṃ hitāvatīrṇasya ka īśire 'sya | kālena yair vā vimitāḥ su-kalpair bhū-pāṃśavaḥ khe mihikā dyu-bhāsaḥ || 7 ||

Meaning:समस्त गुणों के स्वामी होते हुए भी जो जगत् के कल्याण हेतु अवतीर्ण हुए, उन आपके गुणों को मापने में कौन समर्थ है? कोई समर्थ पुरुष काल के द्वारा पृथ्वी के परमाणुओं, आकाश के हिमकणों, अथवा नक्षत्रों के प्रकाश-कणों को भले गिन ले, पर आपकी महिमा को नहीं।

තත්තේ(අ)නුකම්පාං සුසමීක්ෂමාණෝ භුඤ්ජාන ඒවාත්මකෘතං විපාකම් . හෘද්වාග්වපුර්භිර්විදධන්නමස්තේ ජීවේත යෝ මුක්තිපදේ දායභාක් .. 8 ..

tat te 'nukampāṃ su-samīkṣamāṇo bhuñjāna evātma-kṛtaṃ vipākam | hṛd-vāg-vapurbhir vidadhan namas te jīveta yo mukti-pade sa dāya-bhāk || 8 ||

Meaning:जो मनुष्य आपकी कृपा की भलीभाँति प्रतीक्षा करते हुए, अपने ही पूर्वकृत कर्मों के फल को धैर्यपूर्वक भोगता हुआ, हृदय, वाणी और शरीर से आपको नमस्कार करते हुए जीवन बिताता है — वही मुक्तिपद का सच्चा अधिकारी (उत्तराधिकारी) है।

The Brahma Stuti is the prayer offered by Lord Brahma to Lord Krishna in Vrindavana, found in the Srimad Bhagavata Purana (Canto 10, Chapter 14).
