Origin & Story
The Gayatri mantra of Lord Rama · Traditional (Vedic)
Beyond the universal Gayatri Mantra, the Vedic tradition gives each great deity its own Gayatri — a prayer in the sacred Gayatri meter calling upon that deity to illumine the intellect. The Rama Gayatri invokes Lord Rama, the seventh avatar of Vishnu and the embodiment of dharma, addressed as Dasharathi (son of Dasharatha) and Sitavallabha (beloved of Sita). Following the timeless pattern "Vidmahe… Dhimahi… Prachodayat," it is chanted for righteousness, peace and steadfast devotion to Rama.
✦ As told in scripture
The very name of Rama is celebrated in tradition as the Taraka mantra — the boat that carries the soul across the ocean of worldly existence; meditating on Rama through his Gayatri is said to steady the mind, uphold dharma in daily life and bring his calm, protective grace to the devotee.
