The Rudra Suktam is the celebrated hymn to Rudra in the second Mandala of the Rigveda, attributed to the seer Gritsamada. In an age when Rudra was revered as the awesome lord of storms, healing herbs and the wild, this hymn approaches him with both reverence and tenderness — never asking to be harmed, ever praising his role as the supreme physician. Its prayers for a hundred winters of life, freedom from disease and the protection of progeny have made it a perennial hymn for health and Rudra's grace.

Because it hails Rudra as 'the best of all physicians', tradition holds that sincere recitation of the Rudra Suktam — especially the second verse praying for a hundred healthy winters — invokes Shiva's healing grace; devotees recite it at the bedside of the sick, and many attribute recoveries and renewed strength to the soothing remedies (shantama bheshaja) the hymn invokes.

ૐ આ તે પિતર્મરુતાં સુમ્નમેતુ મા નઃ સૂર્યસ્ય સંદૃશો યુયોથાઃ। અભિ નો વીરો અર્વતિ ક્ષમેત પ્ર જાયેમહિ રુદ્ર પ્રજાભિઃ॥૧॥
Om a te pitarmarutam sumnametu ma nah suryasya samdrisho yuyothah; Abhi no viro arvati kshameta pra jayemahi Rudra prajabhih. (1)
અર્થ:ॐ। हे मरुतों के पिता (रुद्र), आपकी कृपा हम पर आए; हमें सूर्य के दर्शन (अर्थात् जीवन) से वंचित न करें। हमारा वीर अश्वारोही शत्रु पर विजयी हो; हे रुद्र, हम सन्तति सहित समृद्ध हों।
ત્વાદત્તેભી રુદ્ર શંતમેભિઃ શતં હિમા અશીય ભેષજેભિઃ। વ્યસ્મદ્દ્વેષો વિતરં વ્યંહો વ્યમીવાશ્ચાતયસ્વા વિષૂચીઃ॥૨॥
Tvadattebhi Rudra shantamebhih shatam hima ashiya bheshajebhih; Vyasmaddvesho vitaram vyamho vyamivashchatayasva vishuchih. (2)
અર્થ:हे रुद्र, आपके दिए हुए परम सुखकारी औषधों से मैं सौ शरद् ऋतुएँ जीऊँ; हमसे द्वेष एवं संकट को दूर करें, चारों ओर फैलने वाले रोगों को नष्ट करें।
શ્રેષ્ઠો જાતસ્ય રુદ્ર શ્રિયાસિ તવસ્તમસ્તવસાં વજ્રબાહો। પર્ષિ ણઃ પારમંહસઃ સ્વસ્તિ વિશ્વા અભીતી રપસો યુયોધિ॥૩॥
Shreshtho jatasya Rudra shriyasi tavastamastavasam vajrabaho; Parshi nah paramamhasah svasti vishva abhiti rapaso yuyodhi. (3)
અર્થ:हे वज्रबाहु रुद्र, आप समस्त उत्पन्न प्राणियों में श्रेष्ठ हैं, बलवानों में भी बलवत्तम; हमें संकट के पार ले जाएँ और समस्त आधि-व्याधियों के आक्रमण से रक्षा करें।
મા ત્વા રુદ્ર ચુક્રુધામા નમોભિર્મા દુષ્ટુતી વૃષભ મા સહૂતી। ઉન્નો વીરાં અર્પય ભેષજેભિર્ભિષક્તમં ત્વા ભિષજાં શૃણોમિ॥૪॥
Ma tva Rudra chukrudhama namobhirma dushtuti vrishabha ma sahuti; Unno viran arpaya bheshajebhirbhishaktamam tva bhishajam shrinomi. (4)
અર્થ:हे वृषभ रुद्र, हम अपने नमस्कारों, अनुचित स्तुति अथवा सहआह्वान से आपको क्रुद्ध न करें। अपने औषधों से हमारे वीरों को उन्नत करें; मैं सुनता हूँ कि आप वैद्यों में सर्वश्रेष्ठ वैद्य हैं।
હવીમભિર્હવતે યો હવિર્ભિરવ સ્તોમેભી રુદ્રં દિષીય। ઋદૂદરઃ સુહવો મા નો અસ્યૈ બભ્રુઃ સુશિપ્રો રીરધન્મનાયૈ॥૫॥
Havimabhirhavate yo havirbhirava stomebhi Rudram dishiya; Ridudarah suhavo ma no asyai babhruh sushipro riradhanmanayai. (5)
અર્થ:जो हवियों, आहुतियों एवं स्तोत्रों से आवाहित होते हैं, उन रुद्र को मैं अपनी आहुतियों से प्रसन्न करूँ। कोमल हृदय, सुखपूर्वक आवाहनीय, बभ्रु (पिंगल) एवं सुन्दर हनु वाले वे हमें इस क्रोध के वश न करें।
ઉન્મા મમન્દ વૃષભો મરુત્વાન્ત્વક્ષીયસા વયસા નાધમાનમ્। ઘૃણીવ ચ્છાયામરપા અશીયા વિવાસેયં રુદ્રસ્ય સુમ્નમ્॥૬॥
Unma mamanda vrishabho marutvantvakshiyasa vayasa nadhamanam; Ghriniva chchhayamarapa ashiya vivaseyam Rudrasya sumnam. (6)
અર્થ:मरुतों सहित वह वृषभ (रुद्र) मुझ याचक को बल एवं प्राणशक्ति से तृप्त करे; जैसे ताप से व्याकुल प्राणी छाया पाकर शान्त होता है, वैसे ही मैं रुद्र की कृपा प्राप्त करूँ।
એવા બભ્રો વૃષભ ચેકિતાન યથા દેવ ન હૃણીષે ન હંસિ। હવનશ્રુન્નો રુદ્રેહ બોધિ બૃહદ્વદેમ વિદથે સુવીરાઃ॥૧૫॥
Eva babhro vrishabha chekitana yatha deva na hrinishe na hamsi; Havanashrunno Rudreha bodhi brihadvadema vidathe suvirah. (15)
અર્થ:इस प्रकार, हे बभ्रु, वृषभ, सर्वज्ञ रुद्र, ऐसे हों कि न क्रुद्ध हों, न हानि करें; हे रुद्र, हमारी पुकार सुनें और यहाँ उपस्थित हों; हम उत्तम वीरों से युक्त होकर यज्ञ-सभा में आपकी महिमा का उच्च स्वर से गान करें।

Invokes Rudra (Shiva) as the supreme healer (bhishaktama) for health and recovery
Prayer for a long, healthy life of a hundred winters (shatam himah)

रुद्र सूक्तम् જપ વિધિ
Chant facing east or north, ideally during Rudrabhishekam of a Shiva Linga or before an image of Shiva. Recite each verse clearly and with feeling, especially the prayers for healing and long life, and close with the threefold shanti. For those who are ill, it is traditionally recited on their behalf in the early morning. It may be chanted once within worship or repeated reverently.
