In the Lalitopakhyana of the Brahmanda Purana, the gods, oppressed by the demon Bhandasura, performed a great sacrifice from whose fire of consciousness the Goddess Lalita arose. At her command, the eight Vagdevatas composed her thousand names. These opening names hail her birth from the fire of consciousness and her arming for the cosmic battle that follows.

ੴ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਾਤਾ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਹਾਰਾਜ੍ਞੀ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਤ੍ਸਿਂਹਾਸਨੇਸ਼੍ਵਰੀ । ਚਿਦਗ੍ਨਿਕੁਣ੍ਡਸਂਭੂਤਾ ਦੇਵਕਾਰ੍ਯਸਮੁਦ੍ਯਤਾ ॥
Oṁ Śrīmātā Śrīmahārājñī Śrīmatsiṁhāsaneśvarī | Cidagnikuṇḍasaṁbhūtā Devakāryasamudyatā ||
ਅਰਥ:ॐ। वह श्रीमाता हैं, श्रीमहाराज्ञी हैं, दिव्य सिंहासन पर विराजमान ईश्वरी हैं। वे चिदग्नि-कुण्ड से प्रकट हुईं और देवताओं के कार्य (भण्डासुर-वध) हेतु उद्यत हुईं।
ਉਦ੍ਯਦ੍ਭਾਨੁਸਹਸ੍ਰਾਭਾ ਚਤੁਰ੍ਬਾਹੁਸਮਨ੍ਵਿਤਾ । ਰਾਗਸ੍ਵਰੂਪਪਾਸ਼ਾਢ੍ਯਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਾਕਾਰਾਙ੍ਕੁਸ਼ੋਜ੍ਜ੍ਵਲਾ ॥
Udyadbhānusahasrābhā Caturbāhusamanvitā | Rāgasvarūpapāśāḍhyā Krodhākārāṅkuśojjvalā ||
ਅਰਥ:वे सहस्र उदीयमान सूर्यों के समान प्रभावाली और चार भुजाओं से युक्त हैं। अपने हाथों में वे राग-रूप पाश और क्रोध-रूप अंकुश धारण करती हैं।
ਮਨੋਰੂਪੇਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਕੋਦਣ੍ਡਾ ਪਞ੍ਚਤਨ੍ਮਾਤ੍ਰਸਾਯਕਾ । ਨਿਜਾਰੁਣਪ੍ਰਭਾਪੂਰਮਜ੍ਜਦ੍ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਣ੍ਡਮਣ੍ਡਲਾ ॥
Manorūpekṣukodaṇḍā Pañcatanmātrasāyakā | Nijāruṇaprabhāpūramajjadbrahmāṇḍamaṇḍalā ||
ਅਰਥ:उनका धनुष मन रूपी इक्षु-दण्ड है और पाँच बाण पाँच तन्मात्राएँ हैं; उनकी अपनी अरुण प्रभा के प्रवाह में सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड-मण्डल निमग्न रहता है।
