Oppressed by the demoniac kings led by Kamsa, the goddess Earth, in the form of a cow, approached Lord Brahma for relief. Brahma, together with Lord Shiva and the host of demigods, went to the shore of the Milk Ocean and prayed to Lord Vishnu. The Lord assured them He would soon descend to remove the earth's burden. When the Supreme Lord then took His place within the womb of Devaki in Mathura, the demigods came and offered these sixteen verses of glorification — recognizing Him as the embodiment of Truth and the shelter of all worlds, and consoling Devaki that her son would be the saviour of the Yadu dynasty.

It is said that as the demigods sang these prayers, the prison of Mathura was filled with an extraordinary light and Devaki herself shone with the splendour of the Lord she carried, so radiant that even the cruel Kamsa was struck with wonder and dread. Tradition holds that an expectant mother who hears the Garbha Stuti with faith draws upon her the same protective grace of Vishnu and all the gods that surrounded the divine child within Devaki.

satya-vrataṃ satya-paraṃ tri-satyaṃ satyasya yoniṃ nihitaṃ ca satye | satyasya satyam ṛta-satya-netraṃ satyātmakaṃ tvāṃ śaraṇaṃ prapannāḥ || 26 ||
Meaning:ਅਸੀਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਸ਼ਰਣ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਂ, ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਸਵਰੂਪ ਹੀ ਸਤਯ ਹੈ — ਸਦਾ ਸਤਯਨਿਸ਼ਠ, ਪਰਮ ਸਤਯ, ਤਿੰਨ ਕਾਲਾਂ (ਭੂਤ, ਵਰਤਮਾਨ, ਭਵਿੱਖ) ਦਾ ਸਤਯ, ਸਮਸਤ ਸਤਯ ਦਾ ਉਦਗਮ, ਸਤਯ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਿਹਿਤ, ਸਤਯਾਂ ਦਾ ਵੀ ਸਤਯ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨੇਤਰ ਅਮੋਘ ਸਤਯ ਹਨ।

Meaning:ਇਸ ਆਦਿਵ੍ਰਿਕਸ਼ (ਜਗਤ / ਜੀਵ ਸ਼ਰੀਰ) ਦੇ ਇੱਕ ਆਸ਼੍ਰਯ, ਦੋ ਫਲ, ਤਿੰਨ ਮੂਲ, ਚਾਰ ਰਸ, ਪੰਜ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਰ ਦਾ ਗਿਆਨ, ਛੇ ਸੁਭਾਅ, ਸੱਤ ਛਾਲਾਂ, ਅੱਠ ਸ਼ਾਖਾਵਾਂ, ਨੌਂ ਕੋਟਰ, ਦਸ ਪੱਤੇ ਅਤੇ ਇਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਲ੍ਹਣਾ ਪਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਦੋ ਪੰਛੀ ਹਨ।

tvam eka evāsya sataḥ prasūtis tvaṃ sannidhānaṃ tvam anugrahaś ca | tvan-māyayā saṃvṛta-cetasas tvāṃ paśyanti nānā na vipaścito ye || 28 ||
Meaning:ਕੇਵਲ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਉਦਗਮ ਹੋ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਪਾਲਣ ਹੋ, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਹੀ ਇਸ ਦਾ ਸੰਹਾਰ ਹੋ। ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਚਿੱਤ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਮਾਯਾ ਨਾਲ ਢੱਕਿਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਨਾਨਾ ਭੇਦ ਵੇਖਦੇ ਹਨ, ਵਿਵੇਕੀ ਜਨ ਨਹੀਂ।

Meaning:ਹੇ ਗਿਆਨਸਵਰੂਪ, ਚਰਾਚਰ ਜਗਤ ਦੇ ਕਲਯਾਣ ਲਈ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਵਿਭਿੰਨ ਰੂਪ ਧਾਰਣ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋ — ਸਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਮਯ, ਸੁਖਕਾਰਕ ਰੂਪ, ਜੋ ਸੰਤਾਂ ਲਈ ਮੰਗਲਕਾਰੀ ਪਰ ਦੁਸ਼ਟਾਂ ਲਈ ਵਾਰ-ਵਾਰ ਅਮੰਗਲਕਾਰੀ ਹੁੰਦੇ ਹਨ।

Meaning:ਹੇ ਕਮਲਨਯਨ, ਸਮਸਤ ਸਤ੍ਤ੍ਵ ਦੇ ਧਾਮ, ਕੁਝ ਲੋਕ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਲਾ ਕੇ, ਮਹਾਪੁਰਖਾਂ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਕੀਰਤਿਤ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਚਰਣਕਮਲਰੂਪੀ ਨੌਕਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈ ਕੇ, ਇਸ ਵਿਸ਼ਾਲ ਭਵਸਾਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਵੱਛੇ ਦੇ ਖੁਰ ਦੇ ਟੋਏ ਵਾਂਗ (ਸੁਗਮ) ਬਣਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

Meaning:ਹੇ ਸਵਯੰਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼, ਉਹ ਅਪਾਰ ਕਰੁਣਾਮਯ ਭਗਤ ਇਸ ਦੁਸਤਰ ਅਤੇ ਭਯਾਨਕ ਭਵਸਾਗਰ ਨੂੰ ਆਪ ਪਾਰ ਕਰ ਕੇ, ਇੱਥੇ ਦੂਜਿਆਂ ਲਈ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਚਰਣਕਮਲਰੂਪੀ ਨੌਕਾ ਛੱਡ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ — ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਭਗਤਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪਰਮ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹਸ਼ੀਲ ਹੋ।

ye 'nye 'ravindākṣa vimukta-māninas tvayy asta-bhāvād aviśuddha-buddhayaḥ | āruhya kṛcchreṇa paraṃ padaṃ tataḥ patanty adho 'nādṛta-yuṣmad-aṅghrayaḥ || 32 ||
Meaning:ਹੇ ਕਮਲਨਯਨ, ਜੋ ਹੋਰ ਲੋਕ ਆਪਣੇ ਆਪ ਨੂੰ ਮਿਥਯਾ ਹੀ ਮੁਕਤ ਮੰਨ ਬੈਠਦੇ ਹਨ — ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਭਗਤੀ ਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਕਾਰਨ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਬੁੱਧੀ ਅਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਹੈ — ਉਹ ਮਹਾ ਕਸ਼ਟ ਨਾਲ ਪਰਮ ਪਦ ਤੱਕ ਚੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੀ ਅਣਦੇਖੀ ਕਾਰਨ ਫਿਰ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਡਿੱਗ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ।

tathā na te mādhava tāvakāḥ kvacid bhraśyanti mārgāt tvayi baddha-sauhṛdāḥ | tvayābhiguptā vicaranti nirbhayā vināyakānīkapa-mūrdhasu prabho || 33 ||
Meaning:ਪਰ, ਹੇ ਮਾਧਵ, ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਨਾਲ ਬੱਝੇ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਭਗਤ ਮਾਰਗ ਤੋਂ ਕਦੇ ਨਹੀਂ ਡਿੱਗਦੇ; ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਹੋ ਕੇ ਉਹ ਸਮਸਤ ਵਿਘਨਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੈਨਾਪਤੀਆਂ ਦੇ ਸਿਰਾਂ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੈਰ ਰੱਖਦੇ ਨਿਰਭੈ ਵਿਚਰਦੇ ਹਨ।

sattvaṃ viśuddhaṃ śrayate bhavān sthitau śarīriṇāṃ śreya-upāyanaṃ vapuḥ | veda-kriyā-yoga-tapaḥ-samādhibhis tavārhaṇaṃ yena janaḥ samīhate || 34 ||
Meaning:ਸਥਿਤੀ (ਪਾਲਣ) ਦੇ ਸਮੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਵਿਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਸਤ੍ਤ੍ਵ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹੋ, ਜੋ ਦੇਹਧਾਰੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਪਰਮ ਕਲਯਾਣਕਾਰੀ ਰੂਪ ਹੈ — ਜਿਸ ਦੀ ਆਰਾਧਨਾ ਵੇਦ, ਕਰਮ, ਯੋਗ, ਤਪ ਅਤੇ ਸਮਾਧੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਆਪਣੇ ਸ਼੍ਰੇਯ ਲਈ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ।

sattvaṃ na ced dhātar idaṃ nijaṃ bhaved vijñānam ajñāna-bhidāpamārjanam | guṇa-prakāśair anumīyate bhavān prakāśate yasya ca yena vā guṇaḥ || 35 ||
Meaning:ਹੇ ਵਿਧਾਤਾ, ਜੇ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਇਹ ਵਿਸ਼ੁੱਧ ਸਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਮਯ ਰੂਪ — ਜੋ ਅਗਿਆਨ ਦਾ ਨਾਸ਼ਕ ਵਿਗਿਆਨ ਹੈ — ਪ੍ਰਕਟ ਨਾ ਹੁੰਦਾ, ਤਾਂ ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਅਸਤਿਤਵ ਕੇਵਲ ਗੁਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਕਾਰਜਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਅਨੁਮਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ; ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਜਿਸ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਲ ਸਭ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਉਸੇ ਨਾਲ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਾਣੇ ਜਾਂਦੇ ਹੋ।

na nāma-rūpe guṇa-janma-karmabhir nirūpitavye tava tasya sākṣiṇaḥ | mano-vacobhyām anumeya-vartmano deva kriyāyāṃ pratiyanty athāpi hi || 36 ||
Meaning:ਗੁਣ, ਜਨਮ ਅਤੇ ਕਰਮ ਨਾਲ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ-ਰੂਪ ਨਿਰੂਪਿਤ ਨਹੀਂ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਦੇ — ਤੁਸੀਂ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਸਭ ਦੇ ਸਾਕਸ਼ੀ ਹੋ, ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਮਾਰਗ ਮਨ ਅਤੇ ਵਾਣੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਹੀ (ਭਗਤੀਪੂਰਵਕ) ਅਨੁਮੇਯ ਹੈ; ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਲੀਲਾ-ਕ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਲੋਕ ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਪਛਾਣ ਲੈਂਦੇ ਹਨ।
ශෘණ්වන්ගෘණන්සංස්මරයංශ්ච චින්තයන් නාමානි රූපාණි ච මඞ්ගලානි තේ . ක්රියාසු යස්ත්වච්චරණාරවින්දයෝ- රාවිෂ්ටචේතා න භවාය කල්පතේ .. 37 ..
śṛṇvan gṛṇan saṃsmarayaṃś ca cintayan nāmāni rūpāṇi ca maṅgalāni te | kriyāsu yas tvac-caraṇāravindayor āviṣṭa-cetā na bhavāya kalpate || 37 ||
Meaning:ਜੋ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਕੋਈ ਵੀ ਕਾਰਜ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਮੰਗਲਮਯ ਨਾਮ ਅਤੇ ਰੂਪਾਂ ਦਾ ਸ਼੍ਰਵਣ, ਕੀਰਤਨ, ਸਿਮਰਨ ਅਤੇ ਚਿੰਤਨ ਕਰਦਿਆਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਚਰਣਕਮਲਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਚਿੱਤ ਲਾ ਦਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਉਹ ਫਿਰ ਜਨਮ ਦੇ ਯੋਗ ਨਹੀਂ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ।

diṣṭyā hare 'syā bhavataḥ pado bhuvo bhāro 'panītas tava janmaneśituḥ | diṣṭyāṅkitāṃ tvat-padakaiḥ suśobhanair drakṣyāma gāṃ dyāṃ ca tavānukampitām || 38 ||
Meaning:ਹੇ ਹਰੀ, ਸੌਭਾਗਯ ਨਾਲ, ਈਸ਼ਵਰ ਰੂਪ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਜਨਮ ਨਾਲ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਉਤਰ ਗਿਆ; ਅਤੇ ਸੌਭਾਗਯ ਨਾਲ ਅਸੀਂ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਚਰਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਚਿੰਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਅੰਕਿਤ, ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਅਨੁਕੰਪਾ ਨਾਲ ਸੁਸ਼ੋਭਿਤ ਇਸ ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਤਥਾ ਸਵਰਗ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਵੇਖਾਂਗੇ।
න තේ(අ)භවස්යේශ භවස්ය කාරණං විනා විනෝදං බත තර්කයාමහේ . භවෝ නිරෝධඃ ස්ථිතිරප්යවිද්යයා කෘතා යතස්ත්වය්යභයාශ්රයාත්මනි .. 39 ..
na te 'bhavasyeśa bhavasya kāraṇaṃ vinā vinodaṃ bata tarkayāmahe | bhavo nirodhaḥ sthitir apy avidyayā kṛtā yatas tvayy abhayāśrayātmani || 39 ||
Meaning:ਹੇ ਈਸ਼, ਤੁਸੀਂ ਜਨਮਰਹਿਤ ਹੋ — ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਦਾ ਤੁਹਾਡੀ ਲੀਲਾ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਅਸੀਂ ਕੋਈ ਕਾਰਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਸੋਚ ਸਕਦੇ; ਕਿਉਂਕਿ ਭਾਵੇਂ ਸ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀ, ਸੰਹਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਸਥਿਤੀ ਅਵਿਦਯਾ ਨਾਲ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਹੈ, ਫਿਰ ਵੀ ਉਹ ਅਭੈ ਆਸ਼੍ਰਯ ਰੂਪ ਤੁਹਾਡੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੀ ਟਿਕੀ ਹੈ।

Meaning:ਮਤਸਯ, ਅਸ਼੍ਵ, ਕੱਛਪ, ਨ੍ਰਿਸਿੰਹ, ਵਰਾਹ, ਹੰਸ ਤਥਾ ਖੱਤ੍ਰੀਆਂ, ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੇਵਤਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਲੈਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ! ਜਿਵੇਂ ਤੁਸੀਂ ਇਸ ਸਮੇਂ ਸਾਡੀ ਅਤੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਭੁਵਨ ਦੀ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹੋ, ਉਵੇਂ ਹੀ, ਹੇ ਯਦੁਸ਼੍ਰੇਸ਼ਠ, ਪ੍ਰਿਥਵੀ ਦਾ ਭਾਰ ਹਰੋ। ਤੁਹਾਨੂੰ ਸਾਡਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ।
