Chapter Summary
The fourth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is "Jnana Karma Sanyasa Yoga". In this chapter, Krishna glorifies the Karma Yoga and imparts the Transcendental Knowledge (the knowledge of the soul and the Ultimate Truth) to Arjuna. He reveals the reason behind his appearance in this material world. He reveals that even though he is eternal, he reincarnates time after time to re-establish dharma and peace on this Earth. His births and activities are eternal and are never contaminated by material flaws. Those persons who know and understand this Truth engage in his devotion with full faith and eventually attain Him. They do not have to take birth in this world again.

ଶ୍ରୀ ଭଗଵାନୁଵାଚ ଇମଂ ଵିଵସ୍ଵତେ ଯୋଗଂ ପ୍ରୋକ୍ତଵାନହମଵ୍ଯଯମ୍। ଵିଵସ୍ଵାନ୍ ମନଵେ ପ୍ରାହ ମନୁରିକ୍ଷ୍ଵାକଵେଽବ୍ରଵୀତ୍॥
śhrī bhagavān uvācha imaṁ vivasvate yogaṁ proktavān aham avyayam vivasvān manave prāha manur ikṣhvākave ’bravīt
MeaningThe Blessed Lord said, "I taught this imperishable Yoga to Vivasvan; he then told it to Manu; Manu proclaimed it to Ikshvaku.
ଏଵଂ ପରମ୍ପରାପ୍ରାପ୍ତମିମଂ ରାଜର୍ଷଯୋ ଵିଦୁଃ। ସ କାଲେନେହ ମହତା ଯୋଗୋ ନଷ୍ଟଃ ପରନ୍ତପ॥
evaṁ paramparā-prāptam imaṁ rājarṣhayo viduḥ sa kāleneha mahatā yogo naṣhṭaḥ parantapa
MeaningThis, handed down in regular succession by the royal sages, was known. This Yoga, however, has been lost here over time, O Parantapa (burner of the foes).
ସ ଏଵାଯଂ ମଯା ତେଽଦ୍ଯ ଯୋଗଃ ପ୍ରୋକ୍ତଃ ପୁରାତନଃ। ଭକ୍ତୋଽସି ମେ ସଖା ଚେତି ରହସ୍ଯଂ ହ୍ଯେତଦୁତ୍ତମମ୍॥
sa evāyaṁ mayā te ’dya yogaḥ proktaḥ purātanaḥ bhakto ’si me sakhā cheti rahasyaṁ hyetad uttamam
MeaningThat same ancient yoga has been today taught to you by me, for you are my devotee and my friend; it is the supreme secret.
ଅର୍ଜୁନ ଉଵାଚ ଅପରଂ ଭଵତୋ ଜନ୍ମ ପରଂ ଜନ୍ମ ଵିଵସ୍ଵତଃ। କଥମେତଦ୍ଵିଜାନୀଯାଂ ତ୍ଵମାଦୌ ପ୍ରୋକ୍ତଵାନିତି॥
arjuna uvācha aparaṁ bhavato janma paraṁ janma vivasvataḥ katham etad vijānīyāṁ tvam ādau proktavān iti
MeaningArjuna said, "Later was Thy birth, and prior to it was the birth of Vivasvan (the Sun); how am I to understand that Thou hast taught this Yoga from the beginning?"
ଶ୍ରୀ ଭଗଵାନୁଵାଚ ବହୂନି ମେ ଵ୍ଯତୀତାନି ଜନ୍ମାନି ତଵ ଚାର୍ଜୁନ। ତାନ୍ଯହଂ ଵେଦ ସର୍ଵାଣି ନ ତ୍ଵଂ ଵେତ୍ଥ ପରନ୍ତପ॥
śhrī bhagavān uvācha bahūni me vyatītāni janmāni tava chārjuna tānyahaṁ veda sarvāṇi na tvaṁ vettha parantapa
MeaningThe Blessed Lord said, "Many births of Mine have passed, as well as of thine, O Arjuna; I know them all, but thou knowest not, O Parantapa (scorcher of foes)."
ଅଜୋଽପି ସନ୍ନଵ୍ଯଯାତ୍ମା ଭୂତାନାମୀଶ୍ଵରୋଽପି ସନ୍। ପ୍ରକୃତିଂ ସ୍ଵାମଧିଷ୍ଠାଯ ସଂଭଵାମ୍ଯାତ୍ମମାଯଯା॥
ajo ’pi sannavyayātmā bhūtānām īśhvaro ’pi san prakṛitiṁ svām adhiṣhṭhāya sambhavāmyātma-māyayā
MeaningThough I am unborn and of imperishable nature, and though I am the Lord of all beings, yet, governing my own nature, I am born by my own Maya.
ଯଦା ଯଦା ହି ଧର୍ମସ୍ଯ ଗ୍ଲାନିର୍ଭଵତି ଭାରତ। ଅଭ୍ଯୁତ୍ଥାନମଧର୍ମସ୍ଯ ତଦାଽଽତ୍ମାନଂ ସୃଜାମ୍ଯହମ୍॥
yadā yadā hi dharmasya glānir bhavati bhārata abhyutthānam adharmasya tadātmānaṁ sṛijāmyaham
MeaningWhenever there is a decline of righteousness and an increase of unrighteousness, O Arjuna, then I manifest Myself.
ପରିତ୍ରାଣାଯ ସାଧୂନାଂ ଵିନାଶାଯ ଚ ଦୁଷ୍କୃତାମ୍। ଧର୍ମସଂସ୍ଥାପନାର୍ଥାଯ ସଂଭଵାମି ଯୁଗେ ଯୁଗେ॥
paritrāṇāya sādhūnāṁ vināśhāya cha duṣhkṛitām dharma-sansthāpanārthāya sambhavāmi yuge yuge
MeaningFor the protection of the good, for the destruction of the wicked, and for the establishment of righteousness, I am born in every age.
ଜନ୍ମ କର୍ମ ଚ ମେ ଦିଵ୍ଯମେଵଂ ଯୋ ଵେତ୍ତି ତତ୍ତ୍ଵତଃ। ତ୍ଯକ୍ତ୍ଵା ଦେହଂ ପୁନର୍ଜନ୍ମ ନୈତି ମାମେତି ସୋଽର୍ଜୁନ॥
janma karma cha me divyam evaṁ yo vetti tattvataḥ tyaktvā dehaṁ punar janma naiti mām eti so ’rjuna
MeaningHe who thus knows, in their true light, My divine birth and actions, having abandoned the body, is not born again; he comes to Me, O Arjuna.
ଵୀତରାଗଭଯକ୍ରୋଧା ମନ୍ମଯା ମାମୁପାଶ୍ରିତାଃ। ବହଵୋ ଜ୍ଞାନତପସା ପୂତା ମଦ୍ଭାଵମାଗତାଃ॥
vīta-rāga-bhaya-krodhā man-mayā mām upāśhritāḥ bahavo jñāna-tapasā pūtā mad-bhāvam āgatāḥ
MeaningFreed from attachment, fear, and anger, absorbed in Me, taking refuge in Me, purified by the fire of knowledge, many have attained My Being.
ଯେ ଯଥା ମାଂ ପ୍ରପଦ୍ଯନ୍ତେ ତାଂସ୍ତଥୈଵ ଭଜାମ୍ଯହମ୍। ମମ ଵର୍ତ୍ମାନୁଵର୍ତନ୍ତେ ମନୁଷ୍ଯାଃ ପାର୍ଥ ସର୍ଵଶଃ॥
ye yathā māṁ prapadyante tāns tathaiva bhajāmyaham mama vartmānuvartante manuṣhyāḥ pārtha sarvaśhaḥ
MeaningIn whatever way men approach Me, even so do I reward them; My path do men tread in all ways, O Arjuna.
କାଙ୍କ୍ଷନ୍ତଃ କର୍ମଣାଂ ସିଦ୍ଧିଂ ଯଜନ୍ତ ଇହ ଦେଵତାଃ। କ୍ଷିପ୍ରଂ ହି ମାନୁଷେ ଲୋକେ ସିଦ୍ଧିର୍ଭଵତି କର୍ମଜା॥
kāṅkṣhantaḥ karmaṇāṁ siddhiṁ yajanta iha devatāḥ kṣhipraṁ hi mānuṣhe loke siddhir bhavati karmajā
MeaningThose who long for success in action in this world sacrifice to the gods; for success is quickly attained by men through action.
ଚାତୁର୍ଵର୍ଣ୍ଯଂ ମଯା ସୃଷ୍ଟଂ ଗୁଣକର୍ମଵିଭାଗଶଃ। ତସ୍ଯ କର୍ତାରମପି ମାଂ ଵିଦ୍ଧ୍ଯକର୍ତାରମଵ୍ଯଯମ୍॥
chātur-varṇyaṁ mayā sṛiṣhṭaṁ guṇa-karma-vibhāgaśhaḥ tasya kartāram api māṁ viddhyakartāram avyayam
MeaningThe fourfold caste has been created by Me according to the differentiation of Guna and Karma; though I am the author of it, know Me as non-doer and immutable.
ନ ମାଂ କର୍ମାଣି ଲିମ୍ପନ୍ତି ନ ମେ କର୍ମଫଲେ ସ୍ପୃହା। ଇତି ମାଂ ଯୋଽଭିଜାନାତି କର୍ମଭିର୍ନ ସ ବଧ୍ଯତେ॥
na māṁ karmāṇi limpanti na me karma-phale spṛihā iti māṁ yo ’bhijānāti karmabhir na sa badhyate
MeaningActions do not taint Me, nor do I have a desire for the fruit of actions. He who knows Me thus is not bound by actions.
ଏଵଂ ଜ୍ଞାତ୍ଵା କୃତଂ କର୍ମ ପୂର୍ଵୈରପି ମୁମୁକ୍ଷୁଭିଃ। କୁରୁ କର୍ମୈଵ ତସ୍ମାତ୍ତ୍ଵଂ ପୂର୍ଵୈଃ ପୂର୍ଵତରଂ କୃତମ୍॥
evaṁ jñātvā kṛitaṁ karma pūrvair api mumukṣhubhiḥ kuru karmaiva tasmāttvaṁ pūrvaiḥ pūrvataraṁ kṛitam
MeaningHaving known this, the ancient seekers of freedom also performed action; therefore, do thou also perform action, as the ancients did in days of yore.
କିଂ କର୍ମ କିମକର୍ମେତି କଵଯୋଽପ୍ଯତ୍ର ମୋହିତାଃ। ତତ୍ତେ କର୍ମ ପ୍ରଵକ୍ଷ୍ଯାମି ଯଜ୍ଜ୍ଞାତ୍ଵା ମୋକ୍ଷ୍ଯସେଽଶୁଭାତ୍॥
kiṁ karma kim akarmeti kavayo ’pyatra mohitāḥ tat te karma pravakṣhyāmi yaj jñātvā mokṣhyase ’śhubhāt
MeaningWhat is action? What is inaction? Even the wise are confused about this. Therefore, I shall teach you the nature of action and inaction, by knowing which you will be liberated from the evil of Samsara, the wheel of birth and death.
କର୍ମଣୋ ହ୍ଯପି ବୋଦ୍ଧଵ୍ଯଂ ବୋଦ୍ଧଵ୍ଯଂ ଚ ଵିକର୍ମଣଃ। ଅକର୍ମଣଶ୍ଚ ବୋଦ୍ଧଵ୍ଯଂ ଗହନା କର୍ମଣୋ ଗତିଃ॥
karmaṇo hyapi boddhavyaṁ boddhavyaṁ cha vikarmaṇaḥ akarmaṇaśh cha boddhavyaṁ gahanā karmaṇo gatiḥ
MeaningFor verily, the true nature of action enjoined by the scriptures should be known, as well as that of forbidden or unlawful action, and of inaction; the nature of action is hard to understand.
କର୍ମଣ୍ଯକର୍ମ ଯଃ ପଶ୍ଯେଦକର୍ମଣି ଚ କର୍ମ ଯଃ। ସ ବୁଦ୍ଧିମାନ୍ ମନୁଷ୍ଯେଷୁ ସ ଯୁକ୍ତଃ କୃତ୍ସ୍ନକର୍ମକୃତ୍॥
karmaṇyakarma yaḥ paśhyed akarmaṇi cha karma yaḥ sa buddhimān manuṣhyeṣhu sa yuktaḥ kṛitsna-karma-kṛit
MeaningHe who sees inaction in action and action in inaction, he is wise among men; he is a yogi and performer of all actions.
ଯସ୍ଯ ସର୍ଵେ ସମାରମ୍ଭାଃ କାମସଙ୍କଲ୍ପଵର୍ଜିତାଃ। ଜ୍ଞାନାଗ୍ନିଦଗ୍ଧକର୍ମାଣଂ ତମାହୁଃ ପଣ୍ଡିତଂ ବୁଧାଃ॥
yasya sarve samārambhāḥ kāma-saṅkalpa-varjitāḥ jñānāgni-dagdha-karmāṇaṁ tam āhuḥ paṇḍitaṁ budhāḥ
MeaningHe whose undertakings are all devoid of desires and selfish purposes, and whose actions have been burned by the fire of knowledge, the wise call him a sage.
ତ୍ଯକ୍ତ୍ଵା କର୍ମଫଲାସଙ୍ଗଂ ନିତ୍ଯତୃପ୍ତୋ ନିରାଶ୍ରଯଃ। କର୍ମଣ୍ଯଭିପ୍ରଵୃତ୍ତୋଽପି ନୈଵ କିଞ୍ଚିତ୍କରୋତି ସଃ॥
tyaktvā karma-phalāsaṅgaṁ nitya-tṛipto nirāśhrayaḥ karmaṇyabhipravṛitto ’pi naiva kiñchit karoti saḥ
MeaningHaving abandoned attachment to the fruits of the action, ever content, depending on nothing, he does not do anything even while being engaged in activity.
ନିରାଶୀର୍ଯତଚିତ୍ତାତ୍ମା ତ୍ଯକ୍ତସର୍ଵପରିଗ୍ରହଃ। ଶାରୀରଂ କେଵଲଂ କର୍ମ କୁର୍ଵନ୍ନାପ୍ନୋତି କିଲ୍ବିଷମ୍॥
nirāśhīr yata-chittātmā tyakta-sarva-parigrahaḥ śhārīraṁ kevalaṁ karma kurvan nāpnoti kilbiṣham
MeaningWithout hope, controlling the mind and the self, having abandoned all covetousness, and performing only bodily actions, one incurs no sin.
ଯଦୃଚ୍ଛାଲାଭସନ୍ତୁଷ୍ଟୋ ଦ୍ଵନ୍ଦ୍ଵାତୀତୋ ଵିମତ୍ସରଃ। ସମଃ ସିଦ୍ଧାଵସିଦ୍ଧୌ ଚ କୃତ୍ଵାପି ନ ନିବଧ୍ଯତେ॥
yadṛichchhā-lābha-santuṣhṭo dvandvātīto vimatsaraḥ samaḥ siddhāvasiddhau cha kṛitvāpi na nibadhyate
MeaningContent with what comes to him without effort, free from the pairs of opposites and envy, even-minded in success and failure, he acts yet is not bound.
ଗତସଙ୍ଗସ୍ଯ ମୁକ୍ତସ୍ଯ ଜ୍ଞାନାଵସ୍ଥିତଚେତସଃ। ଯଜ୍ଞାଯାଚରତଃ କର୍ମ ସମଗ୍ରଂ ପ୍ରଵିଲୀଯତେ॥
gata-saṅgasya muktasya jñānāvasthita-chetasaḥ yajñāyācharataḥ karma samagraṁ pravilīyate
MeaningTo one who is devoid of attachment, who is liberated, whose mind is established in knowledge, and who works for the sake of sacrifice (for the sake of God), the whole action is dissolved.
ବ୍ରହ୍ମାର୍ପଣଂ ବ୍ରହ୍ମହଵିର୍ବ୍ରହ୍ମାଗ୍ନୌ ବ୍ରହ୍ମଣା ହୁତମ୍। ବ୍ରହ୍ମୈଵ ତେନ ଗନ୍ତଵ୍ଯଂ ବ୍ରହ୍ମକର୍ମସମାଧିନା॥
brahmārpaṇaṁ brahma havir brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam brahmaiva tena gantavyaṁ brahma-karma-samādhinā
MeaningBrahman is the oblation; Brahman is the melted butter (ghee); by Brahman is the oblation poured into the fire of Brahman; Brahman indeed shall be attained by one who always sees Brahman in action.
ଦୈଵମେଵାପରେ ଯଜ୍ଞଂ ଯୋଗିନଃ ପର୍ଯୁପାସତେ। ବ୍ରହ୍ମାଗ୍ନାଵପରେ ଯଜ୍ଞଂ ଯଜ୍ଞେନୈଵୋପଜୁହ୍ଵତି॥
daivam evāpare yajñaṁ yoginaḥ paryupāsate brahmāgnāvapare yajñaṁ yajñenaivopajuhvati
MeaningSome yogis perform sacrifice to the gods alone; while others, who have realized the Self, offer the Self as sacrifice in the fire of Brahman alone.
ଶ୍ରୋତ୍ରାଦୀନୀନ୍ଦ୍ରିଯାଣ୍ଯନ୍ଯେ ସଂଯମାଗ୍ନିଷୁ ଜୁହ୍ଵତି। ଶବ୍ଦାଦୀନ୍ଵିଷଯାନନ୍ଯ ଇନ୍ଦ୍ରିଯାଗ୍ନିଷୁ ଜୁହ୍ଵତି॥
śhrotrādīnīndriyāṇyanye sanyamāgniṣhu juhvati śhabdādīn viṣhayānanya indriyāgniṣhu juhvati
MeaningSome again offer the organ of hearing and other senses as a sacrifice in the fire of restraint; others offer sound and other objects of the senses as a sacrifice in the fire of the senses.
ସର୍ଵାଣୀନ୍ଦ୍ରିଯକର୍ମାଣି ପ୍ରାଣକର୍ମାଣି ଚାପରେ। ଆତ୍ମସଂଯମଯୋଗାଗ୍ନୌ ଜୁହ୍ଵତି ଜ୍ଞାନଦୀପିତେ॥
sarvāṇīndriya-karmāṇi prāṇa-karmāṇi chāpare ātma-sanyama-yogāgnau juhvati jñāna-dīpite
MeaningOthers again sacrifice all the functions of the senses and those of the breath (vital energy, or Prana) in the fire of the Yoga of self-restraint, kindled by knowledge.
ଦ୍ରଵ୍ଯଯଜ୍ଞାସ୍ତପୋଯଜ୍ଞା ଯୋଗଯଜ୍ଞାସ୍ତଥାପରେ। ସ୍ଵାଧ୍ଯାଯଜ୍ଞାନଯଜ୍ଞାଶ୍ଚ ଯତଯଃ ସଂଶିତଵ୍ରତାଃ॥
dravya-yajñās tapo-yajñā yoga-yajñās tathāpare swādhyāya-jñāna-yajñāśh cha yatayaḥ sanśhita-vratāḥ
MeaningOthers again offer wealth, austerity, and Yoga as sacrifice, while ascetics of self-restraint and rigid vows offer the study of scriptures and knowledge as sacrifice.
ଅପାନେ ଜୁହ୍ଵତି ପ୍ରାଣ ପ୍ରାଣେଽପାନଂ ତଥାଽପରେ। ପ୍ରାଣାପାନଗତୀ ରୁଦ୍ଧ୍ଵା ପ୍ରାଣାଯାମପରାଯଣାଃ॥
apāne juhvati prāṇaṁ prāṇe ’pānaṁ tathāpare prāṇāpāna-gatī ruddhvā prāṇāyāma-parāyaṇāḥ apare niyatāhārāḥ prāṇān prāṇeṣhu juhvati sarve ’pyete yajña-vido yajña-kṣhapita-kalmaṣhāḥ
MeaningOthers offer as sacrifice the outgoing breath into the incoming, and the incoming into the outgoing, restraining the flow of the outgoing and the incoming breaths, solely absorbed in the restraint of the breath.
ଅପରେ ନିଯତାହାରାଃ ପ୍ରାଣାନ୍ପ୍ରାଣେଷୁ ଜୁହ୍ଵତି। ସର୍ଵେଽପ୍ଯେତେ ଯଜ୍ଞଵିଦୋ ଯଜ୍ଞକ୍ଷପିତକଲ୍ମଷାଃ॥
apare niyatāhārāḥ prāṇān prāṇeṣu juhvati sarve py 'ete yajña-vido yajña-kṣapita-kalmaṣāḥ
MeaningOthers who regulate their diet offer life-breaths in each life-breath. All these are knowers of sacrifice, whose sins are destroyed through sacrifice.
ଯଜ୍ଞଶିଷ୍ଟାମୃତଭୁଜୋ ଯାନ୍ତି ବ୍ରହ୍ମ ସନାତନମ୍। ନାଯଂ ଲୋକୋଽସ୍ତ୍ଯଯଜ୍ଞସ୍ଯ କୁତୋ़ଽନ୍ଯଃ କୁରୁସତ୍ତମ॥
yajña-śhiṣhṭāmṛita-bhujo yānti brahma sanātanam nāyaṁ loko ’styayajñasya kuto ’nyaḥ kuru-sattama
MeaningThose who eat the remnants of the sacrifice, which are like nectar, go to the eternal Brahman. This world is not for the one who does not perform sacrifice; how then can they have the other, O Arjuna?
ଏଵଂ ବହୁଵିଧା ଯଜ୍ଞା ଵିତତା ବ୍ରହ୍ମଣୋ ମୁଖେ। କର୍ମଜାନ୍ଵିଦ୍ଧି ତାନ୍ସର୍ଵାନେଵଂ ଜ୍ଞାତ୍ଵା ଵିମୋକ୍ଷ୍ଯସେ॥
evaṁ bahu-vidhā yajñā vitatā brahmaṇo mukhe karma-jān viddhi tān sarvān evaṁ jñātvā vimokṣhyase
MeaningThus, manifold sacrifices are spread out before Brahman at the face of Brahman. Know them all to be born of action, and thus knowing, you shall be liberated.
ଶ୍ରେଯାନ୍ଦ୍ରଵ୍ଯମଯାଦ୍ଯଜ୍ଞାଜ୍ଜ୍ଞାନଯଜ୍ଞଃ ପରନ୍ତପ। ସର୍ଵଂ କର୍ମାଖିଲଂ ପାର୍ଥ ଜ୍ଞାନେ ପରିସମାପ୍ଯତେ॥
śhreyān dravya-mayād yajñāj jñāna-yajñaḥ parantapa sarvaṁ karmākhilaṁ pārtha jñāne parisamāpyate
MeaningSuperior is wisdom-sacrifice to the sacrifice with objects, O Parantapa (scorcher of the foes). All actions in their entirety, O Arjuna, culminate in knowledge.
ତଦ୍ଵିଦ୍ଧି ପ୍ରଣିପାତେନ ପରିପ୍ରଶ୍ନେନ ସେଵଯା। ଉପଦେକ୍ଷ୍ଯନ୍ତି ତେ ଜ୍ଞାନଂ ଜ୍ଞାନିନସ୍ତତ୍ତ୍ଵଦର୍ଶିନଃ॥
tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśhnena sevayā upadekṣhyanti te jñānaṁ jñāninas tattva-darśhinaḥ
MeaningKnow that the wise who have realized the truth will instruct thee in that knowledge through long prostration, supplication, and service.
ଯଜ୍ଜ୍ଞାତ୍ଵା ନ ପୁନର୍ମୋହମେଵଂ ଯାସ୍ଯସି ପାଣ୍ଡଵ। ଯେନ ଭୂତାନ୍ଯଶେଷେଣ ଦ୍ରକ୍ଷ୍ଯସ୍ଯାତ୍ମନ୍ଯଥୋ ମଯି॥
yaj jñātvā na punar moham evaṁ yāsyasi pāṇḍava yena bhūtānyaśheṣheṇa drakṣhyasyātmanyatho mayi
MeaningKnowing that thou shalt not, O Arjuna, again be deluded like this; and by that thou shalt see all beings in thyself and also in me.
ଅପି ଚେଦସି ପାପେଭ୍ଯଃ ସର୍ଵେଭ୍ଯଃ ପାପକୃତ୍ତମଃ। ସର୍ଵଂ ଜ୍ଞାନପ୍ଲଵେନୈଵ ଵୃଜିନଂ ସନ୍ତରିଷ୍ଯସି॥
api ched asi pāpebhyaḥ sarvebhyaḥ pāpa-kṛit-tamaḥ sarvaṁ jñāna-plavenaiva vṛijinaṁ santariṣhyasi
MeaningEven if thou art the most sinful of all sinners, yet thou shalt surely cross over all sins by the raft of knowledge.
ଯଥୈଧାଂସି ସମିଦ୍ଧୋଽଗ୍ନିର୍ଭସ୍ମସାତ୍କୁରୁତେଽର୍ଜୁନ। ଜ୍ଞାନାଗ୍ନିଃ ସର୍ଵକର୍ମାଣି ଭସ୍ମସାତ୍କୁରୁତେ ତଥା॥
yathaidhānsi samiddho ’gnir bhasma-sāt kurute ’rjuna jñānāgniḥ sarva-karmāṇi bhasma-sāt kurute tathā
MeaningAs the blazing fire reduces fuel to ashes, O Arjuna, so does the fire of knowledge reduce all actions to ash.
ନ ହି ଜ୍ଞାନେନ ସଦୃଶଂ ପଵିତ୍ରମିହ ଵିଦ୍ଯତେ। ତତ୍ସ୍ଵଯଂ ଯୋଗସଂସିଦ୍ଧଃ କାଲେନାତ୍ମନି ଵିନ୍ଦତି॥
na hi jñānena sadṛiśhaṁ pavitramiha vidyate tatsvayaṁ yogasansiddhaḥ kālenātmani vindati
MeaningVerily, there is no purifier in this world like knowledge. He who is perfected in Yoga finds it within the Self in due time.
ଶ୍ରଦ୍ଧାଵାଂଲ୍ଲଭତେ ଜ୍ଞାନଂ ତତ୍ପରଃ ସଂଯତେନ୍ଦ୍ରିଯଃ। ଜ୍ଞାନଂ ଲବ୍ଧ୍ଵା ପରାଂ ଶାନ୍ତିମଚିରେଣାଧିଗଚ୍ଛତି॥
śhraddhāvān labhate jñānaṁ tat-paraḥ sanyatendriyaḥ jñānaṁ labdhvā parāṁ śhāntim achireṇādhigachchhati
MeaningThe one who is full of faith, devoted to it, and has subdued their senses obtains this knowledge; and upon obtaining the knowledge, they attain the supreme peace immediately.
ଅଜ୍ଞଶ୍ଚାଶ୍ରଦ୍ଦଧାନଶ୍ଚ ସଂଶଯାତ୍ମା ଵିନଶ୍ଯତି। ନାଯଂ ଲୋକୋଽସ୍ତି ନ ପରୋ ନ ସୁଖଂ ସଂଶଯାତ୍ମନଃ॥
ajñaśh chāśhraddadhānaśh cha sanśhayātmā vinaśhyati nāyaṁ loko ’sti na paro na sukhaṁ sanśhayātmanaḥ
MeaningThe ignorant, the faithless, and the doubting self go to destruction; there is neither this world nor the other, nor happiness for the doubting one.
ଯୋଗସଂନ୍ଯସ୍ତକର୍ମାଣଂ ଜ୍ଞାନସଂଛିନ୍ନସଂଶଯମ୍। ଆତ୍ମଵନ୍ତଂ ନ କର୍ମାଣି ନିବଧ୍ନନ୍ତି ଧନଞ୍ଜଯ॥
yoga-sannyasta-karmāṇaṁ jñāna-sañchhinna-sanśhayam ātmavantaṁ na karmāṇi nibadhnanti dhanañjaya
MeaningHe who has renounced actions through Yoga, whose doubts have been dispelled by knowledge, and who is self-possessed—such a one is not bound by actions, O Arjuna.
ତସ୍ମାଦଜ୍ଞାନସଂଭୂତଂ ହୃତ୍ସ୍ଥଂ ଜ୍ଞାନାସିନାଽଽତ୍ମନଃ। ଛିତ୍ତ୍ଵୈନଂ ସଂଶଯଂ ଯୋଗମାତିଷ୍ଠୋତ୍ତିଷ୍ଠ ଭାରତ॥
tasmād ajñāna-sambhūtaṁ hṛit-sthaṁ jñānāsinātmanaḥ chhittvainaṁ sanśhayaṁ yogam ātiṣhṭhottiṣhṭha bhārata
MeaningTherefore, with the sword of knowledge (of the Self), cut asunder the doubt of the self, born of ignorance, residing in your heart, and take refuge in Yoga. Arise, O Arjuna!
