Chapter Summary

The sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is "Dhyana Yoga". In this chapter, Krishna reveals the "Yoga of Meditation" and how to practise this Yoga. He discusses the role of action in preparing for Meditation, how performing duties in devotion purifies one's mind and heightens one's spiritual consciousness. He explains in detail the obstacles that one faces when trying to control their mind and the exact methods by which one can conquer their mind. He reveals how one can focus their mind on Paramatma and unite with the God.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨੁਵਾਚ ਅਨਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਃ ਕਰ੍ਮਫਲਂ ਕਾਰ੍ਯਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਕਰੋਤਿ ਯਃ। ਸਂਨ੍ਯਾਸੀ ਯੋਗੀ ਨਿਰਗ੍ਨਿਰ੍ਨ ਚਾਕ੍ਰਿਯਃ॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha anāśhritaḥ karma-phalaṁ kāryaṁ karma karoti yaḥ sa sannyāsī cha yogī cha na niragnir na chākriyaḥ

MeaningThe Blessed Lord said: He who performs his bounden duty without depending on the fruits of his actions—he is a sannyasi and a yogi, not he who is without fire and without action.

ਯਂ ਸਂਨ੍ਯਾਸਮਿਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਹੁਰ੍ਯੋਗਂ ਤਂ ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਪਾਣ੍ਡਵ। ਹ੍ਯਸਂਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਤਸਙ੍ਕਲ੍ਪੋ ਯੋਗੀ ਭਵਤਿ ਕਸ਼੍ਚਨ॥

yaṁ sannyāsam iti prāhur yogaṁ taṁ viddhi pāṇḍava na hyasannyasta-saṅkalpo yogī bhavati kaśhchana

MeaningDo you, O Arjuna, know that Yoga is what they call renunciation; no one indeed becomes a Yogi who has not renounced their thoughts.

ਆਰੁਰੁਕ੍षੋਰ੍ਮੁਨੇਰ੍ਯੋਗਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਕਾਰਣਮੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ। ਯੋਗਾਰੂਢਸ੍ਯ ਤਸ੍ਯੈਵ ਸ਼ਮਃ ਕਾਰਣਮੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ॥

ārurukṣhor muner yogaṁ karma kāraṇam uchyate yogārūḍhasya tasyaiva śhamaḥ kāraṇam uchyate

MeaningFor a sage who wishes to attain to Yoga, action is said to be the means; for the same sage who has attained Yoga, inaction is said to be the means.

ਯਦਾ ਹਿ ਨੇਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਿਯਾਰ੍ਥੇषੁ ਕਰ੍ਮਸ੍ਵਨੁषਜ੍ਜਤੇ। ਸਰ੍ਵਸਙ੍ਕਲ੍ਪਸਂਨ੍ਯਾਸੀ ਯੋਗਾਰੂਢਸ੍ਤਦੋਚ੍ਯਤੇ॥

yadā hi nendriyārtheṣhu na karmasv-anuṣhajjate sarva-saṅkalpa-sannyāsī yogārūḍhas tadochyate

MeaningWhen a person is not attached to the sense-objects or to actions, having renounced all thoughts, then they are said to have attained Yoga.

ਉਦ੍ਧਰੇਦਾਤ੍ਮਨਾऽऽਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਨਾਤ੍ਮਾਨਮਵਸਾਦਯੇਤ੍। ਆਤ੍ਮੈਵ ਹ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਨੋ ਬਨ੍ਧੁਰਾਤ੍ਮੈਵ ਰਿਪੁਰਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ॥

uddhared ātmanātmānaṁ nātmānam avasādayet ātmaiva hyātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ

MeaningOne should raise oneself by one's own self alone; let not one lower oneself; for the self alone is one's own friend, and the self alone is one's own enemy.

ਬਨ੍ਧੁਰਾਤ੍ਮਾऽऽਤ੍ਮਨਸ੍ਤਸ੍ਯ ਯੇਨਾਤ੍ਮੈਵਾਤ੍ਮਨਾ ਜਿਤਃ। ਅਨਾਤ੍ਮਨਸ੍ਤੁ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁਤ੍ਵੇ ਵਰ੍ਤੇਤਾਤ੍ਮੈਵ ਸ਼ਤ੍ਰੁਵਤ੍॥

bandhur ātmātmanas tasya yenātmaivātmanā jitaḥ anātmanas tu śhatrutve vartetātmaiva śhatru-vat

MeaningThe Self is the friend of the self of him by whom the Self has been conquered; but to the unconquered self, this Self stands in the position of an enemy, like an external foe.

ਜਿਤਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਨ੍ਤਸ੍ਯ ਪਰਮਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਸਮਾਹਿਤਃ। ਸ਼ੀਤੋष੍ਣਸੁਖਦੁਃਖੇषੁ ਤਥਾ ਮਾਨਾਪਮਾਨਯੋਃ॥

jitātmanaḥ praśhāntasya paramātmā samāhitaḥ śhītoṣhṇa-sukha-duḥkheṣhu tathā mānāpamānayoḥ

MeaningThe Supreme Self of him who is self-controlled and peaceful remains balanced in cold and heat, pleasure and pain, as well as in honor and dishonor.

ਜ੍ਞਾਨਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਤृਪ੍ਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਕੂਟਸ੍ਥੋ ਵਿਜਿਤੇਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਿਯਃ। ਯੁਕ੍ਤ ਇਤ੍ਯੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ ਯੋਗੀ ਸਮਲੋष੍ਟਾਸ਼੍ਮਕਾਞ੍ਚਨਃ॥

jñāna-vijñāna-tṛiptātmā kūṭa-stho vijitendriyaḥ yukta ityuchyate yogī sama-loṣhṭāśhma-kāñchanaḥ

MeaningThe Yogi who is satisfied with the knowledge and wisdom of the Self, who has conquered the senses, and to whom a clod of earth, a piece of stone, and gold are all the same, is said to have attained Nirvikalpa Samadhi.

ਸੁਹृਨ੍ਮਿਤ੍ਰਾਰ੍ਯੁਦਾਸੀਨਮਧ੍ਯਸ੍ਥਦ੍ਵੇष੍ਯਬਨ੍ਧੁषੁ। ਸਾਧੁष੍ਵਪਿ ਪਾਪੇषੁ ਸਮਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਰ੍ਵਿਸ਼ਿष੍ਯਤੇ॥

suhṛin-mitrāryudāsīna-madhyastha-dveṣhya-bandhuṣhu sādhuṣhvapi cha pāpeṣhu sama-buddhir viśhiṣhyate

MeaningHe who is of the same mind towards the good-hearted, friends, enemies, the indifferent, the neutral, the hateful, the relatives, the righteous, and the unrighteous, excels.

ਯੋਗੀ ਯੁਞ੍ਜੀਤ ਸਤਤਮਾਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਰਹਸਿ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ। ਏਕਾਕੀ ਯਤਚਿਤ੍ਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਨਿਰਾਸ਼ੀਰਪਰਿਗ੍ਰਹਃ॥

yogī yuñjīta satatam ātmānaṁ rahasi sthitaḥ ekākī yata-chittātmā nirāśhīr aparigrahaḥ

MeaningLet the yogi constantly strive to keep the mind steady, remaining in solitude, alone, with the body and mind controlled, and free from hope and greed.

ਸ਼ੁਚੌ ਦੇਸ਼ੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿष੍ਠਾਪ੍ਯ ਸ੍ਥਿਰਮਾਸਨਮਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ। ਨਾਤ੍ਯੁਚ੍ਛ੍ਰਿਤਂ ਨਾਤਿਨੀਚਂ ਚੈਲਾਜਿਨਕੁਸ਼ੋਤ੍ਤਰਮ੍॥

śhuchau deśhe pratiṣhṭhāpya sthiram āsanam ātmanaḥ nātyuchchhritaṁ nāti-nīchaṁ chailājina-kuśhottaram

MeaningIn a clean spot, having established a firm seat of his own, neither too high nor too low, made of cloth, skin, and kusha grass layered one over the other.

ਤਤ੍ਰੈਕਾਗ੍ਰਂ ਮਨਃ ਕृਤ੍ਵਾ ਯਤਚਿਤ੍ਤੇਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਿਯਕ੍ਰਿਯਃ। ਉਪਵਿਸ਼੍ਯਾਸਨੇ ਯੁਞ੍ਜ੍ਯਾਦ੍ਯੋਗਮਾਤ੍ਮਵਿਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਧਯੇ॥

tatraikāgraṁ manaḥ kṛitvā yata-chittendriya-kriyaḥ upaviśhyāsane yuñjyād yogam ātma-viśhuddhaye

MeaningThere, having made the mind one-pointed, with the actions of the mind and senses controlled, let him, seated on the seat, practice Yoga for the purification of the self.

ਸਮਂ ਕਾਯਸ਼ਿਰੋਗ੍ਰੀਵਂ ਧਾਰਯਨ੍ਨਚਲਂ ਸ੍ਥਿਰਃ। ਸਂਪ੍ਰੇਕ੍ष੍ਯ ਨਾਸਿਕਾਗ੍ਰਂ ਸ੍ਵਂ ਦਿਸ਼ਸ਼੍ਚਾਨਵਲੋਕਯਨ੍॥

samaṁ kāya-śhiro-grīvaṁ dhārayann achalaṁ sthiraḥ samprekṣhya nāsikāgraṁ svaṁ diśhaśh chānavalokayan

MeaningLet him firmly hold his body, head, and neck erect and still, gazing at the tip of his nose without looking around.

ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਨ੍ਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਵਿਗਤਭੀਰ੍ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਚਾਰਿਵ੍ਰਤੇ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ। ਮਨਃ ਸਂਯਮ੍ਯ ਮਚ੍ਚਿਤ੍ਤੋ ਯੁਕ੍ਤ ਆਸੀਤ ਮਤ੍ਪਰਃ॥

praśhāntātmā vigata-bhīr brahmachāri-vrate sthitaḥ manaḥ sanyamya mach-chitto yukta āsīta mat-paraḥ

MeaningSerene-minded, fearless, firm in the vow of a Brahmachari, having controlled their mind, thinking of Me and balanced in mind, let them sit, having Me as their supreme goal.

ਯੁਞ੍ਜਨ੍ਨੇਵਂ ਸਦਾऽऽਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਯੋਗੀ ਨਿਯਤਮਾਨਸਃ। ਸ਼ਾਨ੍ਤਿਂ ਨਿਰ੍ਵਾਣਪਰਮਾਂ ਮਤ੍ਸਂਸ੍ਥਾਮਧਿਗਚ੍ਛਤਿ॥

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ yogī niyata-mānasaḥ śhantiṁ nirvāṇa-paramāṁ mat-sansthām adhigachchhati

MeaningThus, always keeping the mind balanced, the yogi, with the mind controlled, attains the peace abiding in Me, culminating in liberation.

ਨਾਤ੍ਯਸ਼੍ਨਤਸ੍ਤੁ ਯੋਗੋऽਸ੍ਤਿ ਚੈਕਾਨ੍ਤਮਨਸ਼੍ਨਤਃ। ਚਾਤਿਸ੍ਵਪ੍ਨਸ਼ੀਲਸ੍ਯ ਜਾਗ੍ਰਤੋ ਨੈਵ ਚਾਰ੍ਜੁਨ॥

nātyaśhnatastu yogo ’sti na chaikāntam anaśhnataḥ na chāti-svapna-śhīlasya jāgrato naiva chārjuna

MeaningVerily, Yoga is not possible for him who eats too much, nor for him who does not eat at all, nor for him who sleeps too much, nor for him who is always awake, O Arjuna.

ਯੁਕ੍ਤਾਹਾਰਵਿਹਾਰਸ੍ਯ ਯੁਕ੍ਤਚੇष੍ਟਸ੍ਯ ਕਰ੍ਮਸੁ। ਯੁਕ੍ਤਸ੍ਵਪ੍ਨਾਵਬੋਧਸ੍ਯ ਯੋਗੋ ਭਵਤਿ ਦੁਃਖਹਾ॥

yuktāhāra-vihārasya yukta-cheṣhṭasya karmasu yukta-svapnāvabodhasya yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

MeaningYoga becomes the destroyer of pain for him who is moderate in eating and recreation (such as walking, etc.), who exercises moderation in action, and who is moderate in sleep and wakefulness.

ਯਦਾ ਵਿਨਿਯਤਂ ਚਿਤ੍ਤਮਾਤ੍ਮਨ੍ਯੇਵਾਵਤਿष੍ਠਤੇ। ਨਿਃਸ੍ਪृਹਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਕਾਮੇਭ੍ਯੋ ਯੁਕ੍ਤ ਇਤ੍ਯੁਚ੍ਯਤੇ ਤਦਾ॥

yadā viniyataṁ chittam ātmanyevāvatiṣhṭhate niḥspṛihaḥ sarva-kāmebhyo yukta ityuchyate tadā

MeaningWhen the perfectly controlled mind rests in the Self alone, free from longing for any of the objects of desire, then it is said, 'He is united'.

ਯਥਾ ਦੀਪੋ ਨਿਵਾਤਸ੍ਥੋ ਨੇਙ੍ਗਤੇ ਸੋਪਮਾ ਸ੍ਮृਤਾ। ਯੋਗਿਨੋ ਯਤਚਿਤ੍ਤਸ੍ਯ ਯੁਞ੍ਜਤੋ ਯੋਗਮਾਤ੍ਮਨਃ॥

yathā dīpo nivāta-stho neṅgate sopamā smṛitā yogino yata-chittasya yuñjato yogam ātmanaḥ

MeaningAs a lamp placed in a windless spot does not flicker, so is the Yogi of a controlled mind, who practices Yoga in the Self, compared.

ਯਤ੍ਰੋਪਰਮਤੇ ਚਿਤ੍ਤਂ ਨਿਰੁਦ੍ਧਂ ਯੋਗਸੇਵਯਾ। ਯਤ੍ਰ ਚੈਵਾਤ੍ਮਨਾऽऽਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਨ੍ਨਾਤ੍ਮਨਿ ਤੁष੍ਯਤਿ॥

yatroparamate chittaṁ niruddhaṁ yoga-sevayā yatra chaivātmanātmānaṁ paśhyann ātmani tuṣhyati

MeaningWhen the mind, restrained by the practice of yoga, attains quietude, and when one sees the Self by the Self, they are satisfied in their own Self.

ਸੁਖਮਾਤ੍ਯਨ੍ਤਿਕਂ ਯਤ੍ਤਦ੍ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਗ੍ਰਾਹ੍ਯਮਤੀਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਿਯਮ੍। ਵੇਤ੍ਤਿ ਯਤ੍ਰ ਚੈਵਾਯਂ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਸ਼੍ਚਲਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਃ॥

sukham ātyantikaṁ yat tad buddhi-grāhyam atīndriyam vetti yatra na chaivāyaṁ sthitaśh chalati tattvataḥ

MeaningWhen he (the Yogi) feels that infinite bliss which can be grasped by the pure intellect and which transcends the senses, and is established therein, never moving away from the reality.

ਯਂ ਲਬ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ ਚਾਪਰਂ ਲਾਭਂ ਮਨ੍ਯਤੇ ਨਾਧਿਕਂ ਤਤਃ। ਯਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ਸ੍ਥਿਤੋ ਦੁਃਖੇਨ ਗੁਰੁਣਾਪਿ ਵਿਚਾਲ੍ਯਤੇ॥

yaṁ labdhvā chāparaṁ lābhaṁ manyate nādhikaṁ tataḥ yasmin sthito na duḥkhena guruṇāpi vichālyate

MeaningHaving obtained it, he thinks there is no other gain superior to it; established in it, he is not moved even by heavy sorrow.

ਤਂ ਵਿਦ੍ਯਾਦ੍ ਦੁਃਖਸਂਯੋਗਵਿਯੋਗਂ ਯੋਗਸਂਜ੍ਞਿਤਮ੍। ਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਯੇਨ ਯੋਕ੍ਤਵ੍ਯੋ ਯੋਗੋऽਨਿਰ੍ਵਿਣ੍ਣਚੇਤਸਾ॥

taṁ vidyād duḥkha-sanyoga-viyogaṁ yogasaṅjñitam sa niśhchayena yoktavyo yogo ’nirviṇṇa-chetasā

MeaningLet this be known by the name of Yoga, the severance from union with pain. This Yoga should be practiced with determination and with an undespairing mind.

ਸਙ੍ਕਲ੍ਪਪ੍ਰਭਵਾਨ੍ਕਾਮਾਂਸ੍ਤ੍ਯਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ ਸਰ੍ਵਾਨਸ਼ੇषਤਃ। ਮਨਸੈਵੇਨ੍ਦ੍ਰਿਯਗ੍ਰਾਮਂ ਵਿਨਿਯਮ੍ਯ ਸਮਨ੍ਤਤਃ॥

saṅkalpa-prabhavān kāmāns tyaktvā sarvān aśheṣhataḥ manasaivendriya-grāmaṁ viniyamya samantataḥ

MeaningAbandoning unreservedly all desires born of Sankalpa (thought and imagination) and completely restraining the whole group of senses by the mind from all sides.

ਸ਼ਨੈਃ ਸ਼ਨੈਰੁਪਰਮੇਦ੍ ਬੁਦ੍ਧ੍ਯਾ ਧृਤਿਗृਹੀਤਯਾ। ਆਤ੍ਮਸਂਸ੍ਥਂ ਮਨਃ ਕृਤ੍ਵਾ ਕਿਞ੍ਚਿਦਪਿ ਚਿਨ੍ਤਯੇਤ੍॥

śhanaiḥ śhanair uparamed buddhyā dhṛiti-gṛihītayā ātma-sansthaṁ manaḥ kṛitvā na kiñchid api chintayet

MeaningLittle by little, let him attain steadiness of the intellect by holding it firmly; having made the mind establish itself in the Self, let him not think of anything else.

ਯਤੋ ਯਤੋ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਚਰਤਿ ਮਨਸ਼੍ਚਞ੍ਚਲਮਸ੍ਥਿਰਮ੍। ਤਤਸ੍ਤਤੋ ਨਿਯਮ੍ਯੈਤਦਾਤ੍ਮਨ੍ਯੇਵ ਵਸ਼ਂ ਨਯੇਤ੍॥

yato yato niśhcharati manaśh chañchalam asthiram tatas tato niyamyaitad ātmanyeva vaśhaṁ nayet

MeaningFrom whatever cause the restless and unsteady mind wanders away, let him restrain it from that and bring it under the control of the Self alone.

ਪ੍ਰਸ਼ਾਨ੍ਤਮਨਸਂ ਹ੍ਯੇਨਂ ਯੋਗਿਨਂ ਸੁਖਮੁਤ੍ਤਮਮ੍। ਉਪੈਤਿ ਸ਼ਾਨ੍ਤਰਜਸਂ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਭੂਤਮਕਲ੍ਮषਮ੍॥

praśhānta-manasaṁ hyenaṁ yoginaṁ sukham uttamam upaiti śhānta-rajasaṁ brahma-bhūtam akalmaṣham

MeaningSupreme Bliss indeed comes to this Yogi whose mind is made peaceful, whose passion is quelled, who has become Brahman, and who is free from sin.

ਯੁਞ੍ਜਨ੍ਨੇਵਂ ਸਦਾऽऽਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਯੋਗੀ ਵਿਗਤਕਲ੍ਮषਃ। ਸੁਖੇਨ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਸਂਸ੍ਪਰ੍ਸ਼ਮਤ੍ਯਨ੍ਤਂ ਸੁਖਮਸ਼੍ਨੁਤੇ॥

yuñjann evaṁ sadātmānaṁ yogī vigata-kalmaṣhaḥ sukhena brahma-sansparśham atyantaṁ sukham aśhnute

MeaningThe yogi, always engaging the mind thus (in the practice of yoga), is freed from sins and easily enjoys the infinite bliss of contact with Brahman (the Eternal).

ਸਰ੍ਵਭੂਤਸ੍ਥਮਾਤ੍ਮਾਨਂ ਸਰ੍ਵਭੂਤਾਨਿ ਚਾਤ੍ਮਨਿ। ਈਕ੍षਤੇ ਯੋਗਯੁਕ੍ਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਸਰ੍ਵਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨਃ॥

sarva-bhūta-stham ātmānaṁ sarva-bhūtāni chātmani īkṣhate yoga-yuktātmā sarvatra sama-darśhanaḥ

MeaningWith the mind harmonized by Yoga, he sees the Self abiding in all beings and all beings in the Self; he sees the same everywhere.

ਯੋ ਮਾਂ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਸਰ੍ਵਤ੍ਰ ਸਰ੍ਵਂ ਮਯਿ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ। ਤਸ੍ਯਾਹਂ ਪ੍ਰਣਸ਼੍ਯਾਮਿ ਮੇ ਪ੍ਰਣਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ॥

yo māṁ paśhyati sarvatra sarvaṁ cha mayi paśhyati tasyāhaṁ na praṇaśhyāmi sa cha me na praṇaśhyati

MeaningHe who sees Me everywhere and sees everything in Me, never becomes separated from Me, nor do I from him.

ਸਰ੍ਵਭੂਤਸ੍ਥਿਤਂ ਯੋ ਮਾਂ ਭਜਤ੍ਯੇਕਤ੍ਵਮਾਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ। ਸਰ੍ਵਥਾ ਵਰ੍ਤਮਾਨੋऽਪਿ ਯੋਗੀ ਮਯਿ ਵਰ੍ਤਤੇ॥

sarva-bhūta-sthitaṁ yo māṁ bhajatyekatvam āsthitaḥ sarvathā vartamāno ’pi sa yogī mayi vartate

MeaningHe who, being established in unity, worships Me, who dwells in all beings, that yogi abides in Me, whatever their mode of living may be.

ਆਤ੍ਮੌਪਮ੍ਯੇਨ ਸਰ੍ਵਤ੍ਰ ਸਮਂ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ ਯੋऽਰ੍ਜੁਨ। ਸੁਖਂ ਵਾ ਯਦਿ ਵਾ ਦੁਃਖਂ ਸਃ ਯੋਗੀ ਪਰਮੋ ਮਤਃ॥

ātmaupamyena sarvatra samaṁ paśhyati yo ’rjuna sukhaṁ vā yadi vā duḥkhaṁ sa yogī paramo mataḥ

MeaningHe who, through the likeness of the Self, O Arjuna, sees reality everywhere, be it pleasure or pain, is regarded as the highest Yogi.

ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ ਉਵਾਚ ਯੋऽਯਂ ਯੋਗਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਪ੍ਰੋਕ੍ਤਃ ਸਾਮ੍ਯੇਨ ਮਧੁਸੂਦਨ। ਏਤਸ੍ਯਾਹਂ ਪਸ਼੍ਯਾਮਿ ਚਞ੍ਚਲਤ੍ਵਾਤ੍ ਸ੍ਥਿਤਿਂ ਸ੍ਥਿਰਾਮ੍॥

arjuna uvācha yo ’yaṁ yogas tvayā proktaḥ sāmyena madhusūdana etasyāhaṁ na paśhyāmi chañchalatvāt sthitiṁ sthirām

MeaningArjuna said, "O Krishna, I do not see how this Yoga of equanimity, which you have taught me, can be maintained steadily, due to the restlessness of the mind."

ਚਞ੍ਚਲਂ ਹਿ ਮਨਃ ਕृष੍ਣ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਥਿ ਬਲਵਦ੍ਦृਢਮ੍। ਤਸ੍ਯਾਹਂ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਂ ਮਨ੍ਯੇ ਵਾਯੋਰਿਵ ਸੁਦੁष੍ਕਰਮ੍॥

chañchalaṁ hi manaḥ kṛiṣhṇa pramāthi balavad dṛiḍham tasyāhaṁ nigrahaṁ manye vāyor iva su-duṣhkaram

MeaningThe mind is indeed restless, turbulent, strong, and unyielding, O Krishna; I consider it as difficult to control as controlling the wind.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨੁਵਾਚ ਅਸਂਸ਼ਯਂ ਮਹਾਬਾਹੋ ਮਨੋ ਦੁਰ੍ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਂ ਚਲਂ। ਅਭ੍ਯਾਸੇਨ ਤੁ ਕੌਨ੍ਤੇਯ ਵੈਰਾਗ੍ਯੇਣ ਗृਹ੍ਯਤੇ॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha asanśhayaṁ mahā-bāho mano durnigrahaṁ chalam abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa cha gṛihyate

MeaningThe Blessed Lord said, "Undoubtedly, O mighty-armed Arjuna, the mind is difficult to control and restless; but with practice and dispassion, it can be restrained."

ਅਸਂਯਤਾਤ੍ਮਨਾ ਯੋਗੋ ਦੁष੍ਪ੍ਰਾਪ ਇਤਿ ਮੇ ਮਤਿਃ। ਵਸ਼੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਨਾ ਤੁ ਯਤਤਾ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਯੋऽਵਾਪ੍ਤੁਮੁਪਾਯਤਃ॥

asaṅyatātmanā yogo duṣhprāpa iti me matiḥ vaśhyātmanā tu yatatā śhakyo ’vāptum upāyataḥ

MeaningI think Yoga is hard to be attained by one with an uncontrolled self, but the self-controlled and striving one can attain it by the appropriate means.

ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ ਉਵਾਚ ਅਯਤਿਃ ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਯੋਪੇਤੋ ਯੋਗਾਚ੍ਚਲਿਤਮਾਨਸਃ। ਅਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਯ ਯੋਗਸਂਸਿਦ੍ਧਿਂ ਕਾਂ ਗਤਿਂ ਕृष੍ਣ ਗਚ੍ਛਤਿ॥

arjuna uvācha ayatiḥ śhraddhayopeto yogāch chalita-mānasaḥ aprāpya yoga-sansiddhiṁ kāṅ gatiṁ kṛiṣhṇa gachchhati

MeaningArjuna said, "He who is unable to control himself, even though he has faith, and whose mind wanders away from Yoga, what end does he meet, having failed to attain perfection in Yoga, O Krishna?"

ਕਚ੍ਚਿਨ੍ਨੋਭਯਵਿਭ੍ਰष੍ਟਸ਼੍ਛਿਨ੍ਨਾਭ੍ਰਮਿਵ ਨਸ਼੍ਯਤਿ। ਅਪ੍ਰਤਿष੍ਠੋ ਮਹਾਬਾਹੋ ਵਿਮੂਢੋ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਣਃ ਪਥਿ॥

kachchin nobhaya-vibhraṣhṭaśh chhinnābhram iva naśhyati apratiṣhṭho mahā-bāho vimūḍho brahmaṇaḥ pathi

MeaningFallen from both, does he not perish like a rent cloud, supportless, O mighty-armed one, deluded on the path of Brahman?

ਏਤਨ੍ਮੇ ਸਂਸ਼ਯਂ ਕृष੍ਣ ਛੇਤ੍ਤੁਮਰ੍ਹਸ੍ਯਸ਼ੇषਤਃ। ਤ੍ਵਦਨ੍ਯਃ ਸਂਸ਼ਯਸ੍ਯਾਸ੍ਯ ਛੇਤ੍ਤਾ ਹ੍ਯੁਪਪਦ੍ਯਤੇ॥

etan me sanśhayaṁ kṛiṣhṇa chhettum arhasyaśheṣhataḥ tvad-anyaḥ sanśhayasyāsya chhettā na hyupapadyate

MeaningO Krishna, please completely dispel this doubt of mine, for it is not possible for anyone but You to do so.

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ ਭਗਵਾਨੁਵਾਚ ਪਾਰ੍ਥ ਨੈਵੇਹ ਨਾਮੁਤ੍ਰ ਵਿਨਾਸ਼ਸ੍ਤਸ੍ਯ ਵਿਦ੍ਯਤੇ। ਨਹਿ ਕਲ੍ਯਾਣਕृਤ੍ਕਸ਼੍ਿਚਦ੍ਦੁਰ੍ਗਤਿਂ ਤਾਤ ਗਚ੍ਛਤਿ॥

śhrī bhagavān uvācha pārtha naiveha nāmutra vināśhas tasya vidyate na hi kalyāṇa-kṛit kaśhchid durgatiṁ tāta gachchhati

MeaningThe Blessed Lord said, "O Arjuna, neither in this world nor in the next will there be destruction for him; none, indeed, who does good, O my son, ever comes to grief."

ਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਯ ਪੁਣ੍ਯਕृਤਾਂ ਲੋਕਾਨੁषਿਤ੍ਵਾ ਸ਼ਾਸ਼੍ਵਤੀਃ ਸਮਾਃ। ਸ਼ੁਚੀਨਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰੀਮਤਾਂ ਗੇਹੇ ਯੋਗਭ੍ਰष੍ਟੋऽਭਿਜਾਯਤੇ॥

prāpya puṇya-kṛitāṁ lokān uṣhitvā śhāśhvatīḥ samāḥ śhuchīnāṁ śhrīmatāṁ gehe yoga-bhraṣhṭo’bhijāyate

MeaningHaving attained to the worlds of the righteous and having dwelt there for everlasting years, he who fell from Yoga is born in a house of the pure and wealthy.

ਅਥਵਾ ਯੋਗਿਨਾਮੇਵ ਕੁਲੇ ਭਵਤਿ ਧੀਮਤਾਮ੍। ਏਤਦ੍ਧਿ ਦੁਰ੍ਲਭਤਰਂ ਲੋਕੇ ਜਨ੍ਮ ਯਦੀਦृਸ਼ਮ੍॥

atha vā yoginām eva kule bhavati dhīmatām etad dhi durlabhataraṁ loke janma yad īdṛiśham

MeaningOr he is born in a family of even the wisest of yogis; verily, such a birth is very difficult to obtain in this world.

ਤਤ੍ਰ ਤਂ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਸਂਯੋਗਂ ਲਭਤੇ ਪੌਰ੍ਵਦੇਹਿਕਮ੍। ਯਤਤੇ ਤਤੋ ਭੂਯਃ ਸਂਸਿਦ੍ਧੌ ਕੁਰੁਨਨ੍ਦਨ॥

tatra taṁ buddhi-sanyogaṁ labhate paurva-dehikam yatate cha tato bhūyaḥ sansiddhau kuru-nandana

MeaningThen he comes into contact with the knowledge acquired in his former body and strives even more for perfection, O Arjuna.

ਪੂਰ੍ਵਾਭ੍ਯਾਸੇਨ ਤੇਨੈਵ ਹ੍ਰਿਯਤੇ ਹ੍ਯਵਸ਼ੋऽਪਿ ਸਃ। ਜਿਜ੍ਞਾਸੁਰਪਿ ਯੋਗਸ੍ਯ ਸ਼ਬ੍ਦਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਤਿਵਰ੍ਤਤੇ॥

pūrvābhyāsena tenaiva hriyate hyavaśho ’pi saḥ jijñāsur api yogasya śhabda-brahmātivartate

MeaningBy that same former practice, he is borne on in spite of himself. Even he who merely wishes to know Yoga goes beyond the Brahmanic word.

ਪ੍ਰਯਤ੍ਨਾਦ੍ਯਤਮਾਨਸ੍ਤੁ ਯੋਗੀ ਸਂਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਧਕਿਲ੍ਬਿषਃ। ਅਨੇਕਜਨ੍ਮਸਂਸਿਦ੍ਧਸ੍ਤਤੋ ਯਾਤਿ ਪਰਾਂ ਗਤਿਮ੍॥

prayatnād yatamānas tu yogī sanśhuddha-kilbiṣhaḥ aneka-janma-sansiddhas tato yāti parāṁ gatim

MeaningBut the Yogi who strives assiduously, purified of sins and perfected gradually over many births, reaches the highest goal.

ਤਪਸ੍ਵਿਭ੍ਯੋऽਧਿਕੋ ਯੋਗੀ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਿਭ੍ਯੋऽਪਿ ਮਤੋऽਧਿਕਃ। ਕਰ੍ਮਿਭ੍ਯਸ਼੍ਚਾਧਿਕੋ ਯੋਗੀ ਤਸ੍ਮਾਦ੍ਯੋਗੀ ਭਵਾਰ੍ਜੁਨ॥

tapasvibhyo ’dhiko yogī jñānibhyo ’pi mato ’dhikaḥ karmibhyaśh chādhiko yogī tasmād yogī bhavārjuna

MeaningThe yogi is thought to be superior to the ascetics, even superior to those who have knowledge obtained through the study of scriptures; he is also superior to men of action; therefore, be thou a yogi, O Arjuna.

ਯੋਗਿਨਾਮਪਿ ਸਰ੍ਵੇषਾਂ ਮਦ੍ਗਤੇਨਾਨ੍ਤਰਾਤ੍ਮਨਾ। ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਾਵਾਨ੍ਭਜਤੇ ਯੋ ਮਾਂ ਮੇ ਯੁਕ੍ਤਤਮੋ ਮਤਃ॥

yoginām api sarveṣhāṁ mad-gatenāntar-ātmanā śhraddhāvān bhajate yo māṁ sa me yuktatamo mataḥ

MeaningAnd among all the Yogis, he who, full of faith and with his inner self merged in Me, worships Me is deemed by Me to be the most devoted.
